MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #30): In which we return to Korea from our January Japanese adventures

boatyardblues · 28/01/2022 12:31

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We sometimes resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or favourite actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

@boatyardblues

Has anyone else bought tickets at Cineworld for the global livestream of BTS’ upcoming live gig on 12 March? I’ll be there on my own bright & early at 8.45am on Saturday 12th. 🤣 DH and my kids think I’m bonkers. I told DH that it’s vital research to determine whether I’m ARMY enough to battle it out for UK tickets when they announce their European tour dates.
I read about it on some random Insta post & didn’t believe it. Will it be in all Cineworld or selected ones?

I know UK tour tickets will be gold dust, I do wonder if anyone here can help me score 2 tkts at original price 😊

Not being shown in Belfast Cineworld! The absolute audacity!!!

What platform can I read Business Proposal on?

I think it's on Tapas, it's not a platform I've used before.

Thanks FedUp that's another toon app I've just downloaded.....

JinBhoot · 01/03/2022 21:21

My local Cineworld is a showing BTS Permission To Dance On Stage Seoul: Live
2 shows, 8:45 & 12:45. Which one will be love?

Hopefully there will be subtitles

Sorry Bets!! You'll have no time for kdramas!

Or other real life things I hear about sometimes... 🤷‍♀️

JinBhoot · 01/03/2022 21:22
  • Live show Not love 😆
Rowdythree · 01/03/2022 21:26

DD and I saw the Love Yourself tour live in Seoul at the cinema a few years ago. It was quite good, not a packed out showing, but plenty of people there with their army bombs and a few squeals throughout the show Grin

I haven't checked if its on at our local cineworld yet, or if DD wants to watch it

JinBhoot · 01/03/2022 21:34

@Rowdythree is it a good experience?
Concert in cinema is a funny idea. I am reluctant to suggest. Should I go on my own, without telling anyone?
If I do tell, will I be a laughing stock for a while? Will my siblings & DH stop making fun after a while or will it be a hilarious story of Aunty Jinbhoot - shared on every Christmas gathering?

My understanding is that 8.45 is live, the 12.45 a repeat. I have other plans later that day so 8.45 it is!

@jinbhoot it's not like being at an actual concert, I think it's worth going to see. Obviously you get a much better view than a concert, but you don't have the same atmosphere (unless you have a lively cinema audienceGrin)

boatyardblues · 01/03/2022 21:40

And I am going on my own. When I booked there were about 40-50 other seats already booked so I won’t be a solo oddbod there on my own. I’m not bothered what my family & friends think anyway. My love of kdrama has already made me an oddity. I’ve been liking what I like, consequences be damned, since I was a kid. I’m not going to be swayed at this age. 🤷‍♀️

My local Odean is also showing and this is 8:45 show, all good seats are gone
