I used to live SATC back in the day (hated the films and I'm not watching the new series). The reason I loved it was the characters were older late 20s/30s and well written and I loved the friendship between them. Are there any similar shows out there. I find that most shows have very young females in the lead and I just can't warm to them. I also love that it was filmed a lot on the streets of New York rather than a film set which gave a realness to it.

Any suggestions as to what I might like?

Harlem on Prime has a very SATC vibe but still feels fresh.

NutellaEllaElla · 25/01/2022 20:11

Second vote for Harlem, it's got the perfect SATC vibe. I think i'm going to watch it again.

Have you seen Fleabag? Not too similar to SATC but has the kind of main actor you're looking for. And it's brilliant.

RhythmOfTheLight · 25/01/2022 20:46

Lipstick Jungle, based on the book by Candace Bushnell.

Girls with Lena Dunham.

Oh I was going to suggest Emily in Paris but she is very young.

Bit of an off the wall suggestion but The Good Place has Kristen Bell as a very funny and empowering female lead.

Just seen Fleabag suggested upthread - spot on suggestion!

I am rewatching satc and enjoying it. Like you hated the films and am watching the latest but not really enjoying. Thanks for Harlem recommendation.
I like the friendship aspect and honestly am struggling to think of anything similar and I watch a LOT of TV.

Chosenonesneakymincepie · 25/01/2022 20:54

The Bold Type on Netflix. They're young though but they all have a real feminist vibe compared to SATC

ItsSunnyOutside · 25/01/2022 21:02

Emily in Paris is funny , abit bonkers, eclectic fashion, strong female characters. Emily looks young in it but is actually late 20s. ( 29 I think) There are other great characters in it who are older. It's got abit of everything.

I love The Bold Type! The new/final series must be due here soon 😊

Emily in Paris is okay.

shivermetimbers77 · 25/01/2022 22:01

Call My Agent is brilliant

XelaM · 25/01/2022 22:50

Dead to Me - the two female leads are in their 40's and it's a great show.

Big Litte Lies - awesome show!!! Highly recommend it. All the female leads are mums in their late 30's/ 40's. Cannot recommend it enough!

XelaM · 25/01/2022 22:53

And in Big Little Lies has the friendship and drama of al the female leads plus a bit of murder!

Oh heck yeah!! Loved the bones of this! I want to be Sutton Foster as a grown up! (Nearing 44!)

A random shout but I really enjoyed Home for Christmas on Netflix - it's Norwegian with subtitles, but it did make me smile.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/01/2022 23:00

Don't write off the new series, I hate the films but don't understand the hate for it, I'm really enjoying it Smile

NarcissistsEyebrows · 25/01/2022 23:01

I always recommend The Good Wife, it's my perfect show.

It takes a little while for the female friendships to develop but it is full of female leads, lots of other interesting cameos, and is just really really good.

A top quality legal drama. And Mr Big is in it, though he's not a main character. He plays a similar role to SATC actually: sometimes despised, sometimes irrelevant, occasionally charming husband of a lead female

Scautish · 25/01/2022 23:03

Maybe not quite the same but approx same era - This Life. Absolutely loved it and will rewatch one day. But it’s equal male/female focus so may not be what you want.

Nosetickle · 26/01/2022 20:55

Try firefly lane if you have Netflix

Blankspace4 · 26/01/2022 20:56

Another vote for Shrill on IPlayer

XiCi · 26/01/2022 21:11

Definitely Harlem. It's like a modern day SATC. I really enjoyed it

ThedaBara · 26/01/2022 21:41

Another vote for Good Wife (as well as Good Fight, the spin off), and Call My agent. I also liked good girls revolt on prime (cancelled after one season sadly)
