Staring martin Freeman

Penned by ex-police officer Tony Schumacher, this is his first original series for television and he’s on familiar ground as he focuses on the emotional extremes of life on the front line of British policing.

The Responder follows urgent response officer Chris Carson on a series of five night shifts on his beat in Liverpool.

But Chris has more than just the job to worry about as his personal life has been hit by crisis and he is morally compromised in his work.

He’s forced to take on rookie partner Rachel, but despite his reluctance they both soon realise that survival in the high-pressure world of night-time crime will hinge on whether they can support or destroy each other.

Playing Rachel Hargreaves, Carson’s new nightshift partner, is Adelayo Adedayo (Origin, Timewasters). Despite only being in the role for two weeks, the rookie cop has a clear sense of what’s right and wrong

She is disgusted that she’s been paired with a man whose attitude towards the job, and life in general, is the polar opposite of hers. But will working with Chris and under the city’s darkness change her?

@BIWI

I think it's fantastic. Another one here who hasn't really got much time for Martin Freeman, but I think his acting in this show is amazing. And his accent is great too.

I'm very Hmm at those switching off because it's 'depressing'! What do you think it's like being an emergency responder in a major city centre?!

What do I think it's like? Depressing and a dramatisation, exaggerated for effect, even more so.
BIWI · 29/01/2022 17:40

Well it's written by an ex-copper, who was a responder, so probably not that exaggerated!

TeachesOfPeaches · 29/01/2022 17:51

Can't believe all the negativity here, this show is brilliant and gives real insight into how the lines get blurred in policing.

Reminded me of Sarah Everard's murderer and how he was known by colleagues as 'the rapist' yet was still a policeman. Also reminded me of Bibaa Henry and her sister, police were caught posting selfies with their dead bodies on a public WhatsApp chat.

From this show I could see how shocking things like murder become so mundane to them they become desensitised. You wonder how many things the police have turned a blind eye to.

The writer of the show was a real Merseyside policeman who left after 10 years due to a breakdown and then lived on the streets.

Also Stephen Graham must've been busy when this was filming Grin

BIWI · 29/01/2022 19:10

Although I think Stephen Graham is a brilliant actor, I think it was a good thing that someone else got this job!

Rollergirl11 · 29/01/2022 19:20

@BIWI I agree. I think it would have been lazy casting having Stephen Graham. Too easy almost.

TeachesOfPeaches · 29/01/2022 19:40

I've ended up with a crush on MF after this Blush The Spectator has compared his character to Tony Soprano

ENoeuf · 29/01/2022 21:36

I don’t like it I think it’s for some lazy tropes in it. Like kicking the bloke and then actually staying with him, the care for the girl - is she going to turn out related to him?, the villain visiting the wife and calling him, the girl escaping from the villains?

longwayoff · 29/01/2022 22:19

I do take issue with an experienced officer giving a hundred £ or so to a junkie as a gesture towards helping her leave town as she'd absconded with £xk of cocaine and 'lost' it, so other criminals were looking for her. An experienced officer would know that any ready cash would go straight to a dealer. He would also suspect that she still had her hands on her earlier haul.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 30/01/2022 07:04

dh thinks it remains open for another series

CorneliusVetch · 30/01/2022 07:23

@Rollergirl11

Yeah the rookie cop is very outspoken given she’s only been in the job 2 weeks. She also needs to get rid of her controlling boyfriend who demands she text her while she’s on the job but then won’t come and pick her up when she’s stranded. My guess is that he’s going to be abusive to her at some point and MF will come to her rescue which will form a bond between them.
I thought from her phone screen that we saw a glimpse of that he wasn’t demanding she text him, she kept texting him and he wasn’t responding, like he was ignoring her?

But either way, yeah get rid!

LadyEloise1 · 30/01/2022 09:13

@CorneliusVetch
Yes, from the texts we glimpsed, what she said about her boyfriend to MF and the reality were two different things Sad
I wonder has this relevance- apart from his utter failure to get her out of a very tight spot will it impact the story line further on ?

How many episodes are there ?
There are 2 this week I think.

Lunificent · 30/01/2022 09:26

Emily Fairness as Casey is brilliant. I hope to se more of her on tv.

Lunificent · 30/01/2022 09:26

Fairn not Fairness

mizu · 30/01/2022 14:45

Martin Freeman (or Mr Maddens as my teen girls call him anytime they see him Grin) is superb in this, he is so watchable.

MsMiaWallace · 30/01/2022 22:39

Just finished watching...awesome!
Rachel really grated on me though

Thymeout · 30/01/2022 23:12

I've watched 4 episodes now. It's certainly strong meat. No way could I binge watch. Has to be one episode at a time - it's so intense. But brilliant. Martin Freeman is so versatile when you look at his career. Every role is completely different, moving convincingly from genre to genre. Never likely to be type-cast.
As a series, it reminds me of The Shield, in which an organised group of cops bend the rules to police their area more effectively. Doing a bad thing to do good. Or a good thing that makes the situation worse.

mycatisannoying · 31/01/2022 00:13

I bloody LOVED this.

choirmumoftwo · 31/01/2022 00:41

I enjoyed the storyline but have to disagree with others here about Martin Freeman. For me, he's always Martin Freeman in everything he does. Even looking ropey and with a Liverpudlian accent he's still the same as in everything else. Not a great actor in my opinion. Sorry!

MsMiaWallace · 31/01/2022 08:29

No way! He totally encompasses the role!

LadyEloise1 · 31/01/2022 09:26

We'll have to agree to disagree @choirmumoftwo. I think he's terrific in this.

BIWI · 31/01/2022 09:34

He couldn't be less Martin Freeman if he tried! His accent is amazing. I was really Hmm when I heard he was playing this role as a Scouser, but I honestly would believe he was from Liverpool now.

And his facial expressions, especially when the camera closes in on him during his counselling sessions, are extraordinary.

I wonder if you've been watching the same programme @choirmumoftwo?!

BIWI · 31/01/2022 09:35

... oh, and I'm no MF fan. In fact I wasn't really very keen to watch this in the first place because he was in it!

choirmumoftwo · 31/01/2022 12:04

Each to their own I suppose!

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/01/2022 12:43

E3 tonight. Blondes isn’t binging

Me neither. I rather like having to wait a little while but not a whole week. I think Eps 3, 4 and 5 are this week.
