Staring martin Freeman

Penned by ex-police officer Tony Schumacher, this is his first original series for television and he’s on familiar ground as he focuses on the emotional extremes of life on the front line of British policing.

The Responder follows urgent response officer Chris Carson on a series of five night shifts on his beat in Liverpool.

But Chris has more than just the job to worry about as his personal life has been hit by crisis and he is morally compromised in his work.

He’s forced to take on rookie partner Rachel, but despite his reluctance they both soon realise that survival in the high-pressure world of night-time crime will hinge on whether they can support or destroy each other.

Playing Rachel Hargreaves, Carson’s new nightshift partner, is Adelayo Adedayo (Origin, Timewasters). Despite only being in the role for two weeks, the rookie cop has a clear sense of what’s right and wrong

She is disgusted that she’s been paired with a man whose attitude towards the job, and life in general, is the polar opposite of hers. But will working with Chris and under the city’s darkness change her?

i have seen the first episode and really enjoyed it, thought it was well acted

NinaDefoe · 26/01/2022 06:32

@GucciBear

Tried to watch tonight. Didn't last long/ The appalling dialect made me feel queasy. I am sure Liverpool people are fine but I cannot bear the "phlegmy" sound.
I thought you were going to comment on MF’s interpretation of the Liverpudlian accent! I was wrong!

Do tell us where you are from ‘Gucci so we can be equally insulting to you! I don’t know about your accent but your post was appalling to read.

NinaDefoe · 26/01/2022 06:36

@GucciBear

user ..... Please do not put the blame on Mumsnet, I, not they wrote the post. I have not criticised black or Muslim people or followers of the Dalai Lama because I feel we are different but equal. I found the Liverpool accent hard to understand and listen to - who knows Liverpool folk may well object to my accent. I support their right to do so!!
‘Hard to understand and listen to’ is very different from The appalling dialect made me feel queasy. I am sure Liverpool people are fine but I cannot bear the "phlegmy" sound.

@toomuchlaundry

It’s not that unusual to be 50yo man and have an 8 year old child
My husband was 42 when we had our first.
karlakourt · 26/01/2022 08:34

I really enjoyed this. Good to see MF in something dark. He's brilliant

I'm pleased ifs not stephen graham. That would have been too easy a casting . Too predictable

Did i catch that he has been demoted? He was a detective who has found himself back on the beat? That would explain some of his behaviour

MsMiaWallace · 26/01/2022 08:44

Watched ep1.
Very good & true to life!
Yes they do go out single crewed. They should carry bodyworn cameras however some officers choose to 'forget' to take them out or charge them up.
I think that years ago he would have been a good cop but the strain of the job has obviously affected his mental health.
A good example of a cop who's been in a good while, wants to retire but can't yet.

karlakourt · 26/01/2022 08:46

Tough tough job

MsMiaWallace · 26/01/2022 08:49

It does show the reality of response policing. It's not pink & fluffy.

Rollergirl11 · 26/01/2022 09:27

I thought the second episode was much better. Although getting irritated by the Casey character and think it’s unrealistic that she’s been able to mug off the drug dealer and his heavies so easily! Surely they would just torture her until she told them where the drugs are?

I’m also loving spotting the well known Liverpool actors of old like the guy who used to play Jack Boswell in Bread and Sinbad from Brookie.

Davros · 26/01/2022 10:01

toomuchlaundry I've realised what twaddle I'm talking because DH was in his 50s when DD was under 10! As I said, I had her when I was 43 and he's a couple of years older than me. In my defence, we are close in age and we don't really know anyone else who had young kids when they were 50+

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/01/2022 10:24

Agree @Rollergirl11 e2 def better

Yes he’s been demoted not sure if that’s why been investigated or something else

OP posts:
AntAndDecking · 26/01/2022 10:33

Me too Roller I thought she’d be a lot more beaten up by now (not that I want her to be). I got a bit confused - did Marco end up with a package of cocaine? I thought that was one of the ones Casey nicked, but then there was the holdall. What did I miss? In my head I think of her name being spelt Kacey, I don’t know why!

Dulra · 26/01/2022 10:39

It is a tough watch and quite stressful but that is the life many live which is gritty and chaotic living on the fringes of society and police officers come into contact with that side of life every day whereas the rest of us get to live in ignorant bliss. I work as community worker in disadvantaged areas and I would not go into certain areas after dark but these officers have no choice. I think he is worn down, disillusioned suffering from ptsd and also seems to have had quite a violent parent he is completely let down by his employer and his therapy seems next to useless. I think it does make for uncomfortable viewing because it is so real and the acting is superb.

Yes he’s been demoted not sure if that’s why been investigated or something else
I am not convinced he is being officially investigated I think the guy has gone rogue because he has a vendetta against him and wants to split him from his wife so he can have her, he seems a nasty piece of work

GucciBear · 26/01/2022 11:08

Nina Defoe - We all, I am sure, have heard dialects that really grate - I cannot listen to the nasal, phlegm in the throat one. I find it hard to understand and distasteful. Others may feel differently and dislike other accents. All a matter of taste. I live in the West Country where voices are of a softer nature. Up to others if they don't like this type of accent. Personal taste.

Bakewelltart987 · 26/01/2022 11:15

@WillowintheUK

Gave up here. Far too depressing and pointless.
Is there a point to any TV programme 🤔
toomuchlaundry · 26/01/2022 11:50

How can an accent be distasteful?

SueSaid · 26/01/2022 11:56

I like it. Think rather than the clichéd heroes of police dramas it probably shows the reality. Flawed officers who don't do it by the book but have the welfare of vulnerable people at heart.

I loved how he was with the sword man and with Davy the tramp.

The booking sergeant at the custody centre seemed to support him so his demotion may have been because of jobsworths rather than incompetence.

Felt sorry for the new officer, so naive and out of her depth and surely surely there'd have been someone else she could have paired up with for the rest of the shift. That cut needed stitches too imo.

RaraRachael · 26/01/2022 22:04

Gave up half way through the first episode. Found the accents hard to understand and not all the dialogue was clear, too much swearing and just didn't care about the main character. Just not my cup of tea.

Pawprintpaper · 26/01/2022 22:42

Why do they all have stereotypical perms? This is a bit weird so far.
I thought it was harry enfiield.

OMG I’d forgotten that! None of my family have perms 😂

He looked like a thin version of Justin fetcher as Keith fit in gigglebiz
Pawprintpaper · 26/01/2022 22:43

MF was excellent, though a bit laboured storyline. I preferred happy valley

Hesperatum · 26/01/2022 22:54

I thought Martin Freeman was excellent.

PennyRoyal · 26/01/2022 23:43

Caught up with Ep2 tonight and really enjoyed it. The acting is excellent and there are many interwoven storylines.
The two youngster - Casey and Marko - are very realistic and I'm sure represent the chaotic lives many find themselves in.
I agree with a PP who thinks the investigating officer is doing his own job. It looks like he got Chris demoted from DI before and wants to finish him off, get him the sack and bed his wife.

I knew he'd miss breakfast with his daughter, again very true to life for many emergency service workers whose shift don't finish on the dot.

I'm intrigued as to whether the therapy sessions are flashbacks, happening alongside the action or is the therapy "now" and the storyline what he's recalling.

Best thing on telly at the moment!

Italiangreyhound · 27/01/2022 04:17

I really did not like episode 1 but have watched on and it is brilliant. The acting is amazing MF and AA are great.

It's very tense but very good telly.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 27/01/2022 07:34

the new copper is annoying.
i was distracted in the second episode but am enjoying MF very much.

Mydogisagentleman · 27/01/2022 07:39

Watched both episodes last night. I really enjoyed it, but I had to put the subtitles on.
Looking forward to the next one
