Thread Three here to discuss the red herrings, daft clues, and to swear blind we recognise the voices/kneecaps/hands...

OP posts:

Yes, I knew that about Aled - couldn't remember how the clue was phrased that was all.

Bonnie Langford was on the radio last week promoting a kids' cartoon she's one of the voices for, plus she was on the first series of DOI, although she spent meant most of her time being lifted and thrown around.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/01/2022 22:24

Traffic Cone - bit random but Alan Carr!

Alan Carr has many varied talents. Singing isn't one of them! He's joked before about how bad his singing voice is.

Ah that's a shame. Traffic Cone has a slight speech impediment around their s's which initially made us think him. But Back for Good would have been good for him coming back after being a guest judge.

The only thing is I don't think traffic cone actually has a great voice...more of a good karaoke voice.

PugInTheHouse · 23/01/2022 22:48

I would be surprised if traffic cone wasn't a singer, I think they are hiding their voice quite a bit but their control in the 2nd song they sang was really good which is why I think they are a trained singer. When they try to hide their voices they definitely don't sound as good so it could be a red herring. It's so hard to tell.

RoboBunny wasn't great this week, I really don't think it's H from Steps, I just can't imagine he is good enough to have sung Shallow the other week.

I am so impatient, I just want to know them all now Grin

IsaLating · 24/01/2022 07:02

I was out on Saturday, but enjoyed catching up on the repeat show, great Sunday morning telly.

WeAreTheHeroes · 24/01/2022 07:10

@Whatinthe - can you explain more about Traffic Cone's speech impediment please? I've listened to the clue package and the performance from Saturday night again and can't figure out what you're referring to.

Tbf this was my husband's guess and it may just be a particular way of pronouncing the S's rather than an impediment but in the songs we hear more of a 'th' than 's' at the beginning of words. However I just listened back to the clues and can't hear it when they were talking so please ignore me and carry on Grin

Me after the first episode.
...or me after the first performance!

Ok…Traffic Cone, my one bone of contention, I’m thinking we are going down the wrong path here and it could possibly be a politician.

I need to look into it more because I haven’t gone over his yet for this week, but so far things are maybe pointing (like the shard 😉😉) to this person who may or mayoral not wear a gold chain like TC did on Saturday night.

🤣🤣

mooncheese · 24/01/2022 13:38

🤬 can’t be him he was at Cop26 at time of filming 😂

Back to the drawing board, but I do think it’s something along those lines.

WeAreTheHeroes · 24/01/2022 16:44

Heck - Bonnie Langford has already done TMS so she isn't going to be Firework.

OperationRinka · 24/01/2022 16:47

Bonnie did masked dancer not singer so in theory she could do them both, but I think it's a bit unlikely.

ColdNovemberRain · 24/01/2022 17:19

I've gotten myself into a web of deception deeper than any TS contestant Grin

I promised DH and family I was going to stay away from MN and Digital Spy this year and work out everything by myself. I promised myself that the shock and surprise at the unmaskings would be worth it. Then I broke last week and joined the thread, soon deciding that yes, Poodle was definitely Tom Chaplin. DH is a big Keane fan though and I just couldn't keep the news to myself. I tried to play it subtle at first; played Hopes and Fears in the car and remarked that actually Tom C sounds a bit like Gary Barlow at times, and I had previously said that Poodle sounded like Gary B so wouldn't it be funny if Tom were Poodle. DH just scoffed at me. Told me Tom wouldn't do that show and anyway the voices are nothing alike. So then I went for a blatant lie. Told him that we were discussing TMS at work and several colleagues have sussed Tom as Poodle. He still said we were all mad. Then on Saturday he listened intently. He insisted on pausing the broadcast after the performance and listened to a Keane track straight away to compare. He reviewed the clues and eventually concluded that my "work colleagues" may actually be right. He was pretty much beside himself with excitement at the unmasking.

Now though, I can't decide if I added to the experience by laying him a breadcrumb trail, or if I should have waited for the unmasking to be a complete surprise.

I'm trying desperately to forget everything else I've seen on this thread but also can't stay away. I want to discuss theories and see if others have caught the same clues.

I have two utterly left-field guesses which deep down, I know are unlikely but in the spirit of the game I'm trying to forget everything I've seen about Mark Westlife and Aled Jones and go with what the clues and voices are telling me...

I'm therefore thinking that Traffic Cone could be Wynne Evans, the Go Compare man. Quite a few of the clues add up, the voice isn't dissimilar, Back for Good could be a reference to when the ad campaign dropped him and then reinstated him. I can imagine that this show would really appeal to him as a platform for showing off his voice without the obvious baggage. I don't get the Skepta stuff though.

I have an even more leftfield guess for Robobunny. I re-reviewed the list of names I compiled before this series, of people I thought were likely contenders. One of the names was Ken Jeong. I could totally see him making a surprise appearance. It's not a perfect match but some of the clues could relate to some of his films and the jokey type bad voice he did at the beginning of Shallow sounds very like Ken's over-exaggerated Korean accent. Ken is a good singer - the clip of him on South Korea's masked singer singing creep is not a million miles away from some of the notes we've heard Robobunny make, and BTS could be the clue rather than Dynamite? Moreso I imagine that if Ken did do the show, he'd want the most extravagant costume and the most cryptic clue package.

I'm going to continue to ponder those options while simultaneously keeping DH away from my workmates in case he randomly congratulates someone on their TMS guesswork!

Why would Panda have a Barbie?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/01/2022 23:24

I can't see Traffic Cone being Wynne Evans. Unless he's really good at disguising his voice - he sings with a lot more power than Aled does. Plus, I don't think he sounds particularly Welsh when he sings - Aled really does.

Even if it is him, though, I do feel a bit sorry for Wynne. He's capable of singing some of the most magnificent and demanding arias in the classical world (and has done), but he will only ever achieve nationwide fame for one thing. Joel could reel off a long list of the leading male characters that he's interpreted to great acclaim, and the audience would just sit there shaking their heads until he said "You know - it's the Go Compare man!"

Boobahs · 25/01/2022 00:06

Awesome

ColdNovemberRain · 25/01/2022 11:46

I actually thought that TC did hit a few notes on saturday which led me to believe he's been holding back and is capable of letting a much more powerful voice rip, which is what led me to Wynne. I agree though about feeling sorry for him - he is an incredible performer and while I'm sure he gets a decent paycheck from Go Compare, he must rue the day he agreed to put on that comedy mustache.

I'm well aware that it is a far fetched theory though. Aled's gold plated childhood makes more sense. Not sure if anyone else caught the Aled Jones question on Only Connect last night - will now be looking out for clues about dueting with oneself, or revisiting the past.

I know it's a fairly throwaway populist bit of trash tv but I am fascinated by the psychology behind it all. it's obviously filmed in advance so they are not riffing off social media theories to push clues in one direction or another. It's like the programme makers have said from the outset that they will drop ambiguous clues which could lead us to, e.g. Tom Chaplin or Brian May and much of the time we've fallen for the (mis) direction but I wonder if there are some clues which just aren't landing with the public and therefore who they are wanting us to think of for certain participants. It's all a bit Derren Brown-esque.

ColdNovemberRain · 25/01/2022 11:47

TC = Traffic Cone, not Tom Chaplin. Speaking of ambiguity....

JaneJeffer · 25/01/2022 12:30

I'm still annoyed at them for that whiteboard. It had nothing to do with Keane Angry

mooncheese · 25/01/2022 14:21

Well I went down my Google rabbit hole for Traffic cone being a politician and it could either be….

George Osborne, David Cameron….or the bloody #10 cat or all I know!

I’m still thinking Tory….plus the red lunchbox first had a pie then sweets which took me to George with his big red budget case and the pasty and sweet tax. Also the Cone was on a web… surfing the web, he brought in Google tax!

OGTC - Tory Candidate
Here to bring the party…..blah blah

Yes!! This is my thing with Panda, I totally get the Natalie Imbruglia guesses because the clues match her but they also match who I think it is because and there have been two tiny other things I have spotted unless those can be linked to Natalie too.

mooncheese · 25/01/2022 14:37

Oops didn’t go bold, first paragraph above was quoting @ColdNovemberRain Blush

I very much doubt he can sing like Traffic Cone but one MP who'd probably be game for this sort of thing is Lembit Opik.

APJ1 · 25/01/2022 22:30

Oops bold fail, that was in response to @mooncheese
