If so, what did you think?

Yes, last night. Both of us thought it was poor. I fell asleep in the second half so ploughed through it this morning in the hope I'd missed something exciting. I hadn't.

We found it very slow and frankly rather boring. I like Olivia Coleman but a thumbs down from me.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 02/01/2022 16:21

Thanks @LiterallyKnowsBest we can do it over there. I didn't check tbh, as I've put it in the right section (go me) Grin and it was only available from 31 Dec. Oh gosh, 2 freds. Not just me then!

@plm456 I watched it in one go. I thought it was interesting, a take on it what it's like not to be fulfilled soley by being a mother, wanting a career, juggling said career, and maybe not bonding properly with first child?

I watched and I can't stand OC normally but thought she was well cast in this. I haven't read the book so couldn't compare it. I 'enjoyed' it.

BlondeDogLady · 03/01/2022 13:06

We watched this a few days ago. Only because I think OC is never in anything bad. We thought it was weird! Not sure what the point of any of it was ???? And for the love of all that is Holy, why didn't she get rid of that bloody doll??

BlondeDogLady · 03/01/2022 13:11

Oh, and why did the women all look at each other lustfully? I mean, why?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 03/01/2022 13:39

i didnt see lustful looks

catfunk · 03/01/2022 13:43

I thought Olivia Colman was great, the casting was all great and very beautifully shot.
BUT I found it quite uncomfortable/ depressing and quite slow which isn't a good combo for me.

DartmoorChef · 09/01/2022 01:48

Just watched it and found it to be utter rubbish. I used to like Olivia Coleman but recently I've started to find her quite irritating in most of the things she's been in and this was no exception.

RoyKentsChestHair · 09/01/2022 01:56

I did. There were a lot of lingering pauses and touching that I would have found really uncomfortable as a straight woman!

I thought it was an interesting look at the taboo of not being a natural mother. I’ve felt like that a lot over the years, like I was missing something that other mums had that made them love their life. My DCs are well adjusted and loved, but I’ve always felt like I almost had to force motherhood as it wasn’t really me.

But I think I only appreciated that about it because I’d read a review about it before I watched it so was kind of looking for the signs. I think I’d have been waiting for the big reveal, which never came, if I hadn’t read about it up front.

I don’t love OC, she always seems to play the same character, but I liked the younger Leda actor.

Rubyyyy · 09/01/2022 02:02

Left a lot of unanswered questions for me like why did she keep going dizzy? Why did she steal the doll when she knew the poor kid she stole it from was in a state without it?
Was she dead at the end because that orange just appeared from nowhere lol.

ouch321 · 09/01/2022 02:03

Thought it a bit weird, gave up after an hour or so. There's some other good stuff out soon on Netflix soon luckily.

There was definitely lustful looks and unnecessary touching. I thought it was a terrible film. I do think Jessie Buckley is good in it. I think she's brilliant though.

WheelieBinPrincess · 09/01/2022 08:49

They weren’t ‘lustful looks’ they were supposed to demonstrate the gazes of other women. Looking at other women’s figurines on the beach, how we compare and evaluate other female forms compared to our own.

cushioncovers · 09/01/2022 15:20

I watched it and don't really know what to make of it.

What a crock of shite. What was with the unnecessary touching?

Heepers · 09/01/2022 18:44

I loved it. Thought it was thought provoking and beautiful to watch.

WheelieBinPrincess · 09/01/2022 19:40

I don’t think it is a ‘crock of shite’ actually Hmm

What’s with the unnecessary touching? Well probably to demonstrate how bloody annoying it is to have physical contact ALL the time, when you just want to be left alone.

But obviously you’re entitled to your opinion. Anyway I thought it was wonderful.

RoyKentsChestHair · 09/01/2022 19:42

The Italian hiker touching her face and long lingering hugs, looked like she was about to kiss her on the lips, despite having only just met (albeit having deep and meaningful drunken chats!)

WheelieBinPrincess · 09/01/2022 19:45

Ok I did actually think the Italian hiker bit was a bit OTT actually, but then you can see how Leda is fascinated by a woman who is governed by a desire for freedom and not confirming to what society expected of her. She’d clearly never met anyone like that before.

MsBananas · 09/01/2022 19:52

I really liked it and was absorbed throughout. It was dark, but beautiful. I thought it was a really raw, refreshing look at motherhood and how oppressive it can feel.

I sometimes find OC a bit samey in films, but she played this role wonderfully.

I feel exactly the same about the film. I watched it alone but now really want to watch it with someone else to see what they think. I was absorbed and in some ways scared of Olivia Coleman, especially when she said 'I'm an unnatural mother' at the end.

It was refreshing to watch a different side of motherhood especially when I one day would like to start trying for children, but don't feel ready yet..

I found that part upsetting as I remember going to my GP in tears with PND saying I just don’t feel like a natural mother and he wrote it in my notes “not a natural mother”. Way to make me feel like shit!!
