Cheers Cordelia, obviously missed that. Grin

Maireas · 01/12/2021 20:28

He said Katie Piper is a friend for life and he's in touch with Maisie. He didn't mention Alexandra Burke.

Well no, she did say on her insta story KARMA when he was benched that year!

Missed this! Ouch! Did wonder that year if there was quite a bit of tension as I assume Alexandra Burke was quite competitive (and good) but maybe Gorka was too interested in trying to woo Gemma at the time.. which I can guess would be frustrating from A.B's perspective. Maybe they didn't gel as a pairing either.
JacquelineCarlyle · 01/12/2021 22:00

Alexandra was quite vocal about not being impressed that Gorka was going out with Gemma that year as she felt he was distracted. I remember at the time thinking she was whining quite a bit, but in hindsight, I can see that would have been annoying, especially given how competitive she seems to be.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 01/12/2021 22:41

Smacks a bit of pissy Burker instead of pissy Gorka.

The lass was great dance wise but I couldn’t warm to her. Felt too ringery.

She should have aced it but the likeability comes into play alongside ability and for me, it just wasn’t there.

And that cannot be blamed on Gorks getting or wanting to be close to Gemma.

I don't actually remember anything about Alexandra mentioning Gorka and Gemma's relationship while the show was on. It's the tabloids who alleged she was having rows with Gorka because of Gemma but I think they were just trying to fuel the hate in the same way that they're doing with Dan this year.

That year she received so much hate for being a ringer, being fake, humble bragging, faux modest, annoying etc and these were just words used on this forum.

I was impressed with Gorka's interview and how he praised all his partners including Alexandra. It was lovely that he mentioned Gemma.

ElftonWednesday · 02/12/2021 06:16

I increasingly think Janette is dressing for the job she wants, not the one she has- the Saturday night gig, not the weekday evening one. Another bizarrely OTT outfit last night with the trouser suit. Kimberley Walsh, however, looked amazing.

TomelettewithGreggs · 02/12/2021 06:19

Alexandra Burke was one of my all time faves. I couldn't care less about her personality; her dances were electric! I am that way with all the dancers. Dan may be the world's nicest man but I don't care because his dances are like watching paint dry.

ElftonWednesday · 02/12/2021 06:39

She had some really good dances but it was a strong year and she didn't have my heart.

xsquared · 02/12/2021 07:16

@ElftonWednesday

Her only other real competition was Debbie McGee. Joe was good but not really the same standard. Gemma was just popular so avoided the dance off until the semi final.

Had Astin had a better dance in week 8, he may have remained in the competition.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 02/12/2021 07:32

Alexandra’s paso and her AT were both gorgeous as well as the jive that everyone raves about. I wanted Debbie to win that year because - similar to this year - I found the whole chemistry of her relationship with Gio extraordinary. She was quite lost after Paul Daniels’ death and Gio really nurtured her through the competition. I think he has real hidden depths that we get a glimpse of when we see him with someone like her or Rose - much more than the Italian stallion serial dater that we see in the tabloids.

I found Joe McFadden really quite disturbing (there were some strange rumours swirling around about him) and it didn’t help that he was paired with Katya who is my least favourite female pro by some distance. I was a bit gutted when they won rather than the infinitely more memorable Debbie or Alexandra.

The one I have heard involves him, a judge and an after show party.

Debbie was great but she was also a professional dancer before becoming Paul's assistant, for me she should never have been on the show. I don't expect people to have zero dance experience but having "dancer" on your passport crosses a line for me

ElftonWednesday · 02/12/2021 08:03

I always liked Gio and Gorka, but I don't read the tabloids.

Katya and Joe just had that extra oomph for me that year. The Dr Zhivago Viennese Waltz has really stayed with me.

FeedMeSantiago · 02/12/2021 08:26

2017 was a good year of Strictly. I remember seeing Joe's week 1 jive and thinking he might win it. I enjoyed his Dr Zhivago dance but his Samba stood out, mainly because you'd think a samba to Money from Cabaret wouldn't work but Katya really pulled it out of the bag.

I liked Debbie, she had some great dances, especially her Argentine Tango. I also enjoyed her relationship with Joe Varney. Gio seemed to really mature that year and it felt like he supported Debbie really well. She was a massive ringer but she was 59 and she had recently lost Paul so I remember just enjoying seeing her have a nice time.

Alexandra was brilliant but I always got the impression that she and Gorka didn't get on at all.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 02/12/2021 08:45

I felt the same as you onlyliving

AB didn’t have my heart.

Debbie made it bloom. There was something quite magical about their partnership.

I supported Gemma that year I think. Loved her.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 02/12/2021 09:02

Was Debbie the first contestant that broke the over-40-so-must-be-the-comedy-act mould?
There was a real feeling of ‘if not now, when?’ about Debbie and her beautiful dancing and it seemed right that she finally got some recognition for her own talents. And Giovanni definitely showed that he has finer feelings. He’s not just a man who conducts his love life like he’s sitting in a convenience store with a revolving door! Debbie and Giovanni’s AT really was a highlight, I agree. I watch it back quite often.

I’ve just seen Rhys being interviewed on Lorraine.Tess coochy-cooing him was brought up. (Tess has always reminded me of Lorraine in her manner actually!) Rhys didn’t seem to mind the incident and took it in good part. He was very relaxed and sunny in the interview. The public sob seems to have been cathartic.

Nancy mentioned that Rhys had been a bit afraid to look her in the eyes but was improving. I think training with her might be … bracing.

I don’t think she’s going to be moving in with Rhys and Hacker after the show!

Runningupthecurtains · 02/12/2021 09:26

Was Debbie the first contestant that broke the over-40-so-must-be-the-comedy-act mould?

I think Pamela Stephenson did that before Debb-eh

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 02/12/2021 09:37

Pamela was on before I really got into watching. I've just had a look on Youtube - yes, you are right!

She's an interesting person. More erudite and sensitive than you might imagine she would be from her early work on TV - and she has written wonderfully about husband Billy Connolly.

GrouchyKiwi · 02/12/2021 09:43

Cherie Lunghi was also excellent.

CaveMum · 02/12/2021 09:50

Leslie Garrett in S1 was definitely not a comedy addition (finished 3rd). Granted S1 was pretty weak and in any other year I’m not sure Natasha K would have won.

Redcrayons · 02/12/2021 10:15

I don’t think they tapped into the comedy element prior to John Sargeant. There’s been plenty of oldies who haven’t done it.

My memory isn’t great, but I don’t think we’ve had a comedy celeb for a while.

SequinsandStiIettos · 02/12/2021 10:20

Debbie should have won but not because of rumours, just that she was so bloody good and put the work in (as did Danny Mac. Just because both were ringers didn't mean they weren't training 12 hours a day).
Joe did say Strictly didn't boost his career in the way he thought it might. Right before the final he was alleged to have had an altercation in a club a few years before with a fellow actor, which he denied. metro.co.uk/2017/12/18/strictly-champion-joe-mcfadden-denies-claims-nightclub-bust-fellow-holby-star-7167402/
There was allegedly more to it but sites and papers backed off because of possible defamation and invasion of privacy.
