Anyone in?
Spoilers allowed up to book 14
My first views are that I don't know why Perrin needed to be married then kill his wife??? He doesn't need a back story to becoming lord goldeneyes. Getting faile back becomes his motivation later on. Also why make Mat have an abusive family? He's meant to be light hearted and all about fun to create the contrast with the effects of shadar logoth.

They're in the wrong city!

NynaeveSedai · 03/12/2021 23:17

I think it's moving simultaneously too fast and not fast enough! Surely this journey took most of a book?!

GrouchyKiwi · 03/12/2021 23:18

I hate where they're going with the Whitecloaks. There's even less subtlety in them than the first time we saw them. Valda is both incomprehensibly stupid and an over-the-top bad guy instead of being both reasonable and clever. Hate them.

Found most of this episode pointless. What happened to Caemlyn? So many weird changes that make no sense.

Siuan's annoyance with Moiraine had better be cover for their actual friendship and secret plotting re the DR.

And dude are they laying on thick their attempt to make us think Mat is the DR.

I enjoyed episode 4 a lot so this one was a real let down.

GlumyGloomer · 04/12/2021 07:06

Grouchy Kiwi I agree re Mat. I can't remember when the dagger thing comes out but I remember he was an absolute pain in the arse while under its influence. The show seems to have turned it into more noble suffering, with the odd bit of paranoia.

I miss the bit where they learned to juggle and play the flute. I can see why it was cut but it could have been fun.
The whitecloaks bit was very over dramatic, but it was the only action this episode so I'm prepared to let it slide.
Loial's costume I'm not so sold on, but I think the actor nailed the voice and the deliberate way of speaking.
Wish they'd done Camelyn but maybe the season 1 budget wouldn't stretch to the extra set?

ArabellaStrange · 04/12/2021 18:27

Nyanave not being immediately pounced on in the white tower is dumb.
Also Warders quarters? Not mentioned explicitly but I am pretty sure that an aes sedai's warder would share quarters with his sister, but hard to be on hand otherwise.
Also no ears on Loial. That sucks.

NynaeveSedai · 04/12/2021 18:28

Warders definitely had quarters, they didn't share with their aes sedai, they wouldn't need to in the tower

CaptainCallisto · 11/12/2021 21:48

I read that they'd put Caemlyn off until S2 so as not to introduce Elayne until later. They wanted to really focus on just the Emonds Fielders for S1.

I'm so pleased Loial is being played well (so far) as he's one of my favourite characters. I named my cat after him Grin

CaptainCallisto · 11/12/2021 21:56

Loved this week's episode. DH was less than keen on the Moraine/Siuan relationship, but I think it played really well. It's implied in the books, but I think they needed it to a) make it really clear there's nothing sexual between Moraine and Lan, and b) to give the exile more impact given the limited time they spent in the tower.

Does anyone else think they're gearing up to combine Elaida with Liandrin? It feels to me like they're heading that way with her at the moment...

NynaeveSedai · 11/12/2021 22:06

I know moiraine and siuan were lovers at some point in their youth but isn't it also implied in the book that moiraine and Tom were also lovers? I wouldn't mind if they dropped that which hopefully they will if they are playing up the M/S relationship.

NynaeveSedai · 11/12/2021 22:06

Yes to elaida and liandrin. Though we don't meet elaida until caemlyn so let's see.

GrouchyKiwi · 12/12/2021 21:28

I thought they might be combining Alviarin and Liandrin. Will be interesting to see what happens in/with Caemlyn.

I didn't like the Siuan/Moiraine relationship; felt shoe-horned. I won't mind if Moiraine & Thom don't end up together (that also felt forced) but if Siuan/Gareth doesn't happen I'll be upset.

WTF is going on with Mat not going in the Ways?!

IWantToBeNynaeve · 20/12/2021 11:10

Finally a thread where my username makes sense!
I'm really loving the show so far, I've tried to accept its not the books, its a different turning of the Wheel. In general I've been able to accept most things but there are a few I'm not quite sure about, mainly Moiraine and Suian. I've no problem with them being pillow friends as novices but I don't feel that was their relationship as Aes Sedai and it changes the rapport somewhat. I also think they did Mat and his family dirty but I guess I understand why. I like Barney Harris, I wonder will the new actor be as good. Apparently he didn't return after the Covid lockdown between episodes 6 and 7 so that's why he was shown staying behind instead of going through the Ways with the others, but I think it would have been better if he'd just been shown staying behind in the Tower because he was too weak after being Healed or something? I can't believe there's only one episode left in season 1 😪

GrouchyKiwi · 21/12/2021 13:59

I'm assuming they'll meet up with New Mat in Caemlyn when they eventually get there, and Thom will have met him on the way.

If they don't bring Thom back I will throw a strop.

GrouchyKiwi · 24/12/2021 22:03

Who has watched the last episode? Come and talk to meeeee. I need to grump big time.

TheAmyrlin · 24/12/2021 22:17

What happened there?? Why on earth have they killed Loial? Where’s Tom? And why has Padan Fain got the horn of valere?

GrouchyKiwi · 24/12/2021 22:23

In Book Two Fain lets Darkfriends into Fal Dara and they steal the Horn, so I guess they're just doing that bit a little earlier, which is fine.

But killing Loial? FUCK OFF. I assume Undead Nynaeve (also fuck off) will heal him, unless Necromancer Egwene (FUCK OFF some more, writers, Egwene is bad enough already) does it instead.

And killing UNO too? Low blow, writers, Uno is cool.

In happier news, it's about time Mat came back, and I love the look of the Seanchen. And the actor playing Ishmael was aces.

TheAmyrlin · 24/12/2021 22:31

It’s been ages since I read the earlier books, so I’d forgotten that about Fain.

Maybe Nynaeve wasn’t actually dead? Just near death and Egwene found the spark of life? It would seem very strange for them to put that (bringing someone back from the dead) in, when so much is made of Rand being unable to do that in one of the later books. In the Stone of Tear I think.

Yep, Seanchan look fab. But how long until series 2?

GrouchyKiwi · 24/12/2021 22:51

You're right, she probably wasn't dead, but she was basically dead and Egwene had no skills at healing beyond a cut on the hand or something. She has so many extra cool powers in the books (even though she's a douchecanoe) that I'll be irate if they're giving her more.

No release date yet for season two. I hope we don't have to wait too long.

I'm also pissy about Moiraine being shielded (I'm pretty sure he just tied off a shield that she can't see because true power or whatever [I can't recall when he starts channeling that, to be fair] rather than stilling her).

NynaeveSedai · 25/12/2021 06:22

I'm so disappointed with the series. It had so many amazing bits but the rush to get it all in 8 episodes and the pointless changes have got on my nerves. I know covid didn't help but it was too much.
However the seanchan were amazing.
