Anyone in?
Spoilers allowed up to book 14
My first views are that I don't know why Perrin needed to be married then kill his wife??? He doesn't need a back story to becoming lord goldeneyes. Getting faile back becomes his motivation later on. Also why make Mat have an abusive family? He's meant to be light hearted and all about fun to create the contrast with the effects of shadar logoth.

Aviendha has been cast but no idea who!
Meera Syal is in S2, the moneys on Verin for her.."by the way, that dress you're wearing is green". They've got to include that!

GrouchyKiwi · 24/11/2021 19:59

Meera Syal would be an excellent Verin! I hope that's correct.

GrouchyKiwi · 24/11/2021 20:02

This is Elayne: www.imdb.com/name/nm7969428/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t70

She looks about right.

And I LOVE the choice of Kae Alexander as Min: www.imdb.com/name/nm3664502/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t20

Hopefully those links work.

Verin does not look like her in my head 😂

Mmmm not sure about either of those tbh. I’m re reading the books at the moment which isn’t helping
Ozanj · 24/11/2021 20:27

Perrin and Faile was the only well written love story and there are a huge chunk of fans of their romance. I’m guessing they added the wife to draw it out and keep their interest

SpaceOp · 25/11/2021 10:36

The Elayne one will depend entirely if she can get the character right. Hair colour isn't enough to make it work. I think the Min casting is brilliant and I can see Meera Syal as Verin, yes.

I have a feeling I'll be rereading soon. Must go see which of the books I have and which my siblings have nicked.

hedgehogger1 · 25/11/2021 10:44

It irritates me that they said Egwene could be the dragon. It has to be a man or they can't go mad and be in danger of destroying the world. There's enough strong female characters without messing up that aspect

lemonyfox · 25/11/2021 10:49

My thoughts:

I LOVE the locations they've filmed in, it's made the locations much better than I'd imagined in my head when reading.

Hated that they've made Rand and Egwene have a sexual relationship, I don't see the point in this.

I'm personally not a fan of the actor who's playing Perrin, I think he's straying into the realm of big and dumb rather than big and careful.

LOVE the casting of Thom's character! Also same for Lan and Nyneave.

I was a bit miffed how they've started the series with the Reds and their man-hating the source is only for women etc etc. For people who haven't read the books I can't help but feel like it's setting up their understanding of the source power to be incorrect. I'd rather they had tried to inject a bit of explanation about the taint rather than men just generally not being able to handle it (I know the Red view on this is that anyway but still).

lemonyfox · 25/11/2021 10:52

Also I despised Min's character in the book so I was irrationally hoping they'd cut out that love triangle/square bollocks.

hedgehogger1 · 25/11/2021 14:02

@lemonyfox I agree they've left out the major explanation. Nor made it clear that being "dragon" is a thing that no one wants. They shouldn't even know about that yet :P

MaidenoftheSpear · 26/11/2021 22:41

Episode 4 and Nynaeve doing the opposite of killing it, but actually killing it...how can they make her stronger than that? She won't need the Chodean Kal, just roll her sleeves up and get on with it. Bloody fantastic! (I am a little overwrought)

Fabulous. Just watched episode 4. She was the strongest of them all in the books so this makes sense (aside from Rand). Her block is what diminishes her.

I enjoyed this episode the most even though it obviously doesn’t follow the books closely.

MaidenoftheSpear · 26/11/2021 22:57

Yes of the main goodies she was the strongest , although there was Alivia (?) who had potential to be even stronger. Strongest baddie was Lanfear I think- there's a list and a complicated rating system somewhere

GrouchyKiwi · 26/11/2021 23:04

Loved that moment with Nynaeve, despite the nonsense reason for it.

I think Ishamael is meant to be the strongest of the Forsaken, then Lanfear. IIRC, Ishamael is mentioned as being second only to Lews Therin in the AoL, and Sammael was a poor (male) second to Ishy.

Yes re Alivia. Rand, of course, was stronger than Nynaeve, but he had to be.

MaidenoftheSpear · 26/11/2021 23:27

Yes you're right @GrouchyKiwi , I was thinking about the women . Wtf is Rand going to be like? Or Nynaeve when she's overcome her block and really means it?!

NynaeveSedai · 27/11/2021 06:16

Oh I loved that episode! I know the set up was a bit hammy but nynaeve bursting all that power was awesome. I loved the way her hair flew around!

TipseyTorvey · 27/11/2021 06:27

Ooh can I join. I loved the books but struggled a bit with the casting in episode 1. Especially Egwene, I thought she was blonde (I'm not white myself BTW) ? I'm definitely not rereading the books or I'll get cross and it's been long enough that I can't remember the detail so better this way I think. There's a really good AMA on reddit at the moment from someone that worked on the show that explains a lot. Will try to find the link.

GrouchyKiwi · 27/11/2021 09:15

In the books, all the Emond's Fielders have brown hair and eyes, which is one reason Rand stands out so much. And also why Rand was so taken with Elayne when he fell over the palace wall.

GrouchyKiwi · 27/11/2021 11:01

@MaidenoftheSpear

Yes you're right *@GrouchyKiwi* , I was thinking about the women . Wtf is Rand going to be like? Or Nynaeve when she's overcome her block and really means it?!
If they do the cleansing of Saidin (they had better!) then that will be AMAZING.
TipseyTorvey · 27/11/2021 16:31

Ah grouchy, that makes more sense now on colouring. It's been over 10 years since I read book 1 so memory is very fuzzy.

Mynameisthecatwhogotthecream · 27/11/2021 21:59

In the books wasn't it that men where generally individually stringer than women in the power but women could link with other women. Men could only link if there was a woman in the link and the woman had had to lead the weave

That's right if I remember correctly
lemonyfox · 03/12/2021 21:24

Soooo what's everyone thinking of this week's episode? I guess it must be setting up how significant the breaking of the bond will be between Moraine and Lan eventually, although I'm not sure sure it needed to take up an entire episode...
