MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #28): The Lord gives and He takes away. Lee Jong Suk & Park Hyung Sik return from the army; Seo Kang Joon departs.

boatyardblues · 09/11/2021 12:09

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, which gets in the way of the drama. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:

    FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead

    ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the bum to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but explained or with an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Park Min Young (PMY). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Making a start on 5-9, Jdrama for a bit of light relief before getting stuck into Jirisan with DH when we are both in better form.

Yes, it’s him off My Mister. Park Ho San, 1972 vintage so in age appropriate oppa territory for some of us.

I've binged most of My Name in the last 2 nights. Just made myself go to bed instead of watching the last 2 episodes. It's very good! But I've had to watch the fights through my fingers, it's very bloody!
Park Hee-Soon can definitely go on the age appropriate list though. He's the same age as DH 😬

I agree about the fights TheGirl. It was Dr Who of yore bad in places and it was peeping through my fingers. There may have been a few “oof!”s or gasps in a couple of scenes but it was so, so good. I like how the 2 dodgy guys’ stitch up at the gym didn’t go quite to plan. The scene with the bossman shortly after was one that I watched through my fingers. 😱

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone, I am very glad I delurked! I just had to find more people to talk to about kdrama, it's been two years of just DH and I going "What...!" at each other.

The praise for Would You Like A Cup of Coffee is tempting me to watch it but I am a bit overwhelmed for choice at the moment which is a nice situation to be in.

@rowdythree I suggested to my DH he should watch Hellbound because of the director (Train to Busan) and the premise but now I think I might join in because I'm not finding Happiness too bad on the scary/violent front. I found Uncanny Counter hard to deal with in violence terms for example so I'm a bit of a scaredycat.

There was a fabulous Marie Antoinette shaman on Her Private Life yesterday which reaffirmed why I love kdrama - you'd never ever see anything so wonderfully bizarre on mainstream western tv.

I've started ep 14 of Yumi's Cells and want to knock both their heads together. I've read there will be a second series, does anyone know if this is correct? It might make the no doubt weepy scenes to come easier to bear.

I'm also watching Youn's Stay, a variety show because of the cast - PSJ, the legendary Youn Yuh Jung, Choi Woo Shik and Yung Yu Mi. They have to keep a guest house for foreigners in Korea, it will be interesting to see how they interact. Youn is very funny and PSJ is a very hard worker in the kitchen.

Which platform is Youn’s Stay on Musique? I liked Youn’s series with the Korean restaurant on Tenerife or Lanzarote and thought PSJ and Yung Yu Mi came across well, as hard working and affable. I’d be interested to watch a guest house series.

Musique I also struggled with violence in Uncanny Counter it took me ages to finish the series as I watched it so slowly because of the violence. However, the Zombie films and series, I have been absolutely fine with! I also think the religious aspect to Hellbound will be interesting too. I find cults fascinating!

Boaty I'm looking forward to catching up with Jirisan tomorrow!

I found the bullying violence of The Uncanny Counter much harder to take than any jump scare zombie stuff Musique. Oh Rowdy's beaten me to this!

I've just downloaded Viki and watched episode 1 of Happiness. Totally not what i was expecting but I do love a bit of zombie action so happiness for me. But what's the story with Viki, do I need to subscribe? Seems like I can watch 2 episides of Happiness and then I have to subscribe?

In my mind’s eye, this would be an ideal kdrama addicts London outing coupled with the V&A’s Hallyu exhibition next year.

Everyone’s getting in on the game. I’m attaching screengrab of the Times’ review of AppleTV’s first Korean language drama. It sounds typically bonkers. 😄

I feel like this was a question that needs no answer. Of course you need to subscribe to Viki now. It’s like the ark of the covenant or Pandora’s box (but nicer). Once you have cracked it open, there is no going back!
