MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #28): The Lord gives and He takes away. Lee Jong Suk & Park Hyung Sik return from the army; Seo Kang Joon departs.

boatyardblues · 09/11/2021 12:09

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, which gets in the way of the drama. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is here but our ‘Addicts Recommend’ list below is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads.

Shows marked with an asterisk are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance, eg about suitability for younger teens.

We are generally fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others admittedly), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We have a few frequently used acronyms:

    FL/2FL = female lead/2nd female lead

    ML/2ML = male lead/2nd male lead
🥾🍑 (boot, peach) = kick up the bum to go to bed

We also abbreviate titles if they’re long, but explained or with an obvious abbreviation. Some favourite actors & actresses have been abbreviated for speed/efficiency, eg Park Min Young (PMY). Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

I like that he's pointing out his nipple in case we hadn't noticed it.

It’s a slightly awkward pose. It spoils the effect of him sharing his abs.

OK, I’m pausing ep 16 of Jirisan to point out that the items recovered after the flood were in an unlocked cupboard in an area of the police station open to the public and recently compromised. I watched years of CSI so I know the management of evidence, its tracking and secure storage is vital for its use in criminal proceedings. I think we can all agree this item is compromised. No?

I wonder if our Hometown Cha Cha Oppa will be behind last door 🤔

Has Mr. Bin done LFT before mingling with his lovely hosts? 😂
I wonder if he will get his booster jab here or in Korea.

There was an even stranger picture of him where he had forgotten his trousers rather than his top 😆

I've just caught up on ep 13 and 14 of Jirisan! 😱😢 Hopefully I can finish off the series today

Nice one Rowdy. And an age-appropriate oppa too. The pose makes me laugh. I don't want advent to end, I'm enjoying these pictures way too much.

How was your thermoregulation last night Boaty?

I survived, thanks for asking. I have worked this out after shivering through pre-Christmas drinks in a pub beer garden earlier this week. The secret was layering, so I had to shed a couple on arrival and then build back up once I’d cooled down. We all managed pre-dinner drinks & nibbles, three courses and after dinner coffee but didn’t hang around for late night drinks as the temperature started to plummet around 11pm. You know, there are some really mad and memorable aspects of the pandemic. A dinner party in the garden in late December in puffer jackets, bobble hats, gloves and more has to be up there.

Rowdy - you know you have to post the sans-trousers image now. You can’t throw that in & walk away. 😄

@Rowdythree - another excellent choice of oppa! In the second pic he's either going for a rummage or about to his t-shirt into his pants?
I've slacked on drama watching other than secret royal inspector and joy due to a slightly insane work schedule however I've got 2 days off any nothing planned so off to finish jirisan today and happiness tomorrow. has anyone been watching now we are breaking up? Is it worth starting?

Went out to a local Korean restaurant for lunch yesterday with a friend and 9 year old- they loved it and I to try tteokbokki this time- not how I thought it would taste but delicious - they had a festive special of pigs in blanket tteokbokki skewers😁

I’ve been watching. It’s decent and well cast, but not must see IMO. DS2 caught the end of one episode and was laughing at the slightly overwrought mawkishness of it and soaring ballad. I had to explain the concept of Korean melodrama to him. Both leads are good and aside from one notable exception the supporting cast are engaging. It’s in solid 7 territory for me.

After yesterday’s frantic activity I am having a slow day. We’ve run out of bayonet lightbulbs which means I’ll have to go out eventually. I’m delaying by watching To Fly with You for now.

In reference to Jirisan Boaty don't think too spoilery to say I just wasn't expecting the whole plot to hinge on a Korean government beekeeping subsidy of the early 90s.

It's been a strange couple of years, that is for sure. And just when you think things might be getting back to normal - oh hello omicron! At least it has taught you about layering for if you ever have to experience a Korean winter for real one day.

Pigs in blankets tteokbokki sounds like my kind of fusion food Hydrogen. Did it taste as good as I think it would?

Re: Ji Hoon and his pants. For me, I can cope with the hair, the cardigan and the descending hand but the really disturbing thing is the fact that he is wearing socks and smart shoes. Do you think version 2 is better or worse?

Definitely better Musique! it was the socks halfway up his legs that was the passion killer for me, it reminded me of how my grandad wore his socks😂

It was his spindly ankles emphasised by the socks that got me. My schoolfriend’s Dad worked in magazines as a graphic designer and told me how much images are manipulated before publication, so he could have cankles in real life. Unlikely I know, but that photo may be all kinds of untrue. He’s still lovely in Jirisan though.
