I had a binge catch-up yesterday… I see I was right about Al buying into the pub setting is up for a tedious redevelopment storyline, no doubt with the obligatory ‘Save the Woolie!’ campaign. When will the writers learn that these stories almost never work - purely because there’s zero tension! ‘Will Emmerdale’s most iconic location be destroyed?!’, the Digital Spy headlines will scream. Well no, of course it bloody won’t.

Actually, Emmerdale is the one soap that actually has done that in the past, when they got rid of the original Emmerdale Farm (and later got rid of it altogether), but that was down to being unable to use the original house anymore, and then consciously deciding to cut down on farming content. They’re never going to get rid of The Woolpack, so why make us sit through it?

Plus - who the hell does Al think is going to pay through the nose for a luxury apartment in a village with no pub?

Noone seems to use the pub anymore. There is only ever one or two people in it, usually a Dingle. The place people congregate seems to be The Hop. And dare I say it but even the cafe has more footfall than the Woolpack. I can see why Al thinks luxury apartments are a goer.

I always forget that The Hop has a drinks licence. It does seem like a weird set-up - on one hand it’s organic smoothies and responsibly sourced granola; on the other it’s a cocktail bar (in the middle of an abseiling centre!)

Was going to suggest Steve Marchant as the mystery prison Dad but he's currently being dodgy as fuck in Corrie as Corey's Dad. Not sure the timeline would work anyway.

Has the Charles actor been a theatre actor previously? He always PROJECTS like mad.

I think this is a good shout. I had to check against the Emmerdale Wiki, but he went to prison for ten years in early 1999 - so while theoretically the earliest he could have been out was 2004 if he got full remission, I’m sure they could say he’d been released early on a technicality (or some such nonsense). Plus we know Paul Opacic has recently become available…
