I discovered this on Amazon Prime a couple of weeks ago and have become a bit addicted. I've seen cycle 7 and 8, now on cycle 9.
But, it's pretty horrendous isn't it?!
I've been Googling what happened to...etc and other stuff about it.
The general view seems to be that the winners are seen as reality stars rather than models and don't do well at all post-show. The challenges are horrible.
The biggest shock for me was that Renee from season 8 is now a prisoner with a mohawk. She wasn't the nicest person in the show but I was blown away at how beautiful she was. She really couldn't look
So different 14yrs on.
But, I'll keep watching as, as I said, I'm addicted!

Used to love ANTM - Tyra is such a dick though! Natasha was my favourite in Cycle 8 but they were so mean to her. She looked great as a male gangsta rapper 😁

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 05/10/2021 20:45

I watched the British Invasion series. The winner did a talk on YouTube with one of the Creative Director Jay. Very very interesting to hear. Lots of goss...the behind the scenes stuff....a lot of toxic stuff going on.

Think he did a few more with people from other series too.

AdditionalCharacter · 05/10/2021 20:51

I loved ANTM when it was first out (feels old). Started watching it on Amazon prime at the weekend, just finished season 8.

I was shocked at how the judges were so dismissive of Jaeda in S7 when she complained about the French model telling her he doesn't like black women. That certainly wouldn't happen now.

I love Jael in S8, she was so laid back. She died in 2018 of breast cancer, so young Sad

RavensWig · 05/10/2021 20:56

This is on my list to start next - my current fixation is RuPaul's Drag Race (hence the username), which is basically a drag rip off of ANTM but hilarious.

ANTM seems sad somehow, as it revolves so much around their model looks (although don't get me wrong, I live to watch it) - RDR is more about art and being funny. Kinda...

Oh the shade, the shade of it all...

WheelieBinPrincess · 05/10/2021 20:57

I think they decided who they wanted to win right at the beginning and went with it. Easy to manipulate a contestant into thinking they had a terrible shoot with a few mediocre pics in a pile.

Tyra was bloody awful, a complete bully.

AdditionalCharacter · 05/10/2021 21:05

@RavensWig I enjoyed the earlier series of RDR, but for me the newer series have been spoilt by Ru's poor attempts at showing he's not transphobic, and by queens trying to look too much like women.

The situation with Jaeda was appalling. Basically "suck up racism". So much of the feedback is about letting the models know that they are not allowed to have any self respect. I read about Jael, so so sad. She was a meth addict for a few years too. I thought she was wonderful on there, such a breath of non-bitchy life loving fresh air Sad

I've overdosed on it now but I used to love RPDR. It was really funny watching ANTM second, because drag race is just a that with drag queens and a massive tongue in its cheek. I did enjoy watching Raja in "her" real life as the makeup artist!

I have found it utterly fascinating @AdditionalCharacter and I've learned a lot about it from watching...but yes, I've read that some of that cropped up in later seasons and I certainly think that RuPaul is a cold hearted businessman with dead eyes. I love the queens though. In much later seasons the make-up seems much more clown-like to me with all that cartoon contouring - but the bodies get more and more feminine for sure.

I'm still on the Jinkx season.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 05/10/2021 21:15

I loved antm and now I love watching YouTube videos about how problematic it was.

Natasha was the best. "There's war in other countries" is the best line ever.

AdditionalCharacter · 05/10/2021 21:17

You have a good few seasons before the crap starts then. Jinxx's season was the season they all looked like meth addicts and botched plastic surgery Grin

I'm hoping Amazon release the first seasons as there were some good models there, and in the later ones, my fave Alison is in it. She was robbed, she was amazing.

AdditionalCharacter · 05/10/2021 21:17

Natasha is funny. I wish she had won

onemouseplace · 05/10/2021 21:24

I loved ANTM back in the day - there's a very recent Sentimental Garbage podcast about it actually (including the revelation that Mr Jay has written a thinly veiled takedown of ANTM novel recently that I might just have to read).

I think I stopped watching it when they started the live public voting ones and it just wasn't as watchable for me.

What YouTube videos should I look for? I want all the shade!

I used to love ANTM I didn't know it was on Amazon. Does it seem a bit dated now?
Don't forget to smize.

I doubt bootcut jeans, stilettos and a vest top are still the "model" uniform. Or maybe it is, what would I know?!

It's been so long it might be coming back into fashion Grin

Riada · 05/10/2021 21:59

Is it on Amazon??? I loved it years ago. I got very tired of all the filming back at the house, though. I just wanted to see them modelling!

suckingonchillidogs · 05/10/2021 22:06

I loved it up until they got rid of Noted Fashion Photographer Nigel Barker and the two Jays. That Kerry woman was an awful judge, she seemed to dislike most of the models. Loved the bit where Lesley had a go at her in the Brits v American season

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 05/10/2021 22:10

Omg I love noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker. So hawt. And Janice! I did like twiggy but she was too nice for it really.

I've been watching luxeria on YouTube. America's next top scandal girls!

GreenClock · 05/10/2021 22:17

It went downhill after Noted Nigel and the Jays left. I quite liked Twiggy and Paulina. The “PR Maven” looked miserable the entire time.
The season where they went to China was memorable. I liked Heather, who had ASD.

pinkmews · 05/10/2021 22:18

I still follow noted fashion photographer Nigel on Instagram, and Miss J. Tyra is bonkers.

doadeer · 05/10/2021 22:21

I've just binged them all! It's so awful (but I still watched)

I found the portrayal of black women very problematic - they are constantly telling them they look angry and have attitude. It's really perpetrating toxic stereotypes.

Some of them look very very thin.

It's quite shocking to watch. Makes me think it is never an industry i would want to work in!!

CiaoForNiao · 05/10/2021 22:22

I've just finished watching all the free ones on amazon. I loved it when it was on originally. I don't think its aged well though. They'd never get away with a lot of the comments now.
