Rhys seems quite active on social media, and he's posted no video footage in a training room yet. Only a video of a present he received from Nancy.

Wasn't the launch show filmed on the 11th? So could have been asymptomatic test. The bbc may be doing PCR rather than lateral flows? So the pro could be out of isolation on Wednesday to train giving them 3.5 days with the Celeb.

BaconAndAvocado · 20/09/2021 09:31

Loved, loved, loved the launch show.

I thought the group dance was just gorgeous, I got quite emotional.

To me, the show is pure joy and heralds the start of the Christmas countdown.

Welcome back Strictly ❤️

Taytocrisps · 20/09/2021 12:09

Do you mind if I join the thread? I'm relatively new to Strictly but have watched for the past three or four years. I don't know a lot about dance technique so I'd recognize if the performers were out of sync with each other, but I'd be oblivious to the intricacies of the steps and the posture requirements for waltzes etc. Mainly I watch it for the entertainment factor and the fab. costumes. I watch it with my teenage DD although she's with her Dad every second weekend.

My favorite judge is Craig. The other judges tend to start off with the positive comments and slip in a negative comment at the end, whereas Craig does it the other way around. He gets the negative comments out of the way first and usually finishes off with a positive. Except the audience are generally booing after the negative comments so they miss the positive ones. Also, I think he's more authentic - he's less inclined to go along with the fake tears and mawkishness aspects of the show.

I respect Shirley's position as head judge and her comments are often quite technical. Unfortunately, I don't understand a lot of them. It's a shame they don't show replays while she's talking, to illustrate her points. You know the way they show replays in football. And sometimes she makes a really nasty comment that seems to come out of nowhere.

Motsi is obviously a very talented dancer but I don't rate her as a judge. There's too much, "You go girl", and not enough substance for my liking.

I quite like Anton (controversial).

I really enjoy movies night (also controversial).

Aljaz is my favourite professional dancer because he comes across as a nice, friendly guy and he's easy on the eye. Oti is an incredible dancer and choreographer. I quite like Giovanni too.

I live in Ireland so I can't vote Sad. I guess the producers are afraid that if there's an Irish participant, then we'll get behind them as a nation and vote for them en masse, so they'll have an unfair advantage. But I'd never have voted for Daniel O'Donnell!

I only ever recognize one or two 'celebrities' at the start of the series. I'm not a soaps fan and I'm far too old for the boy bands/social media influencers. But that's part of the fun for me - getting to know the different personalities and watching them as they progress through the dances. Feeling happy for them when they have a good week and disappointed for them when they have a bad week and end up in the dance off. The only celebs I know this year are Tilly Ramsey (DD has watched some of her cookery programmes) and Greg Wise - his name didn't ring any bells but when they did the intros., I realized he played Mountbatten in 'The Crown'. I'm really impressed with the deaf actress Rose Ayling-Ellis. To participate in Strictly would be daunting in itself, but to do so when you're deaf must be a huge challenge. I wish her well.

Looking forward to your company as we watch the new series.

Welcome aboard Tayto, you’re not alone - I luffs Anton too!

There’s a very knowledgeable bunch that frequent these threads (not inc myself in that!) so picking up bits and pieces of “dance talk” and an eye for technique is inevitable. Give it a couple of weeks and you‘ll be yelling “Straighter legs! Stop sticking your bum out!” like the rest of us Wink

Maireas · 20/09/2021 12:25

Hello, Tayto, I watch it for the entertainment and costumes too! Craig is a good judge, he has a tv persona as the pantomime villain!
My colleague knows him in real life and says he's a very kind and thoughtful man, giving advice to dancers backstage and generally being supportive.
As much as I love Motsi, I know what you mean!

Taytocrisps · 20/09/2021 12:26

Thanks for the welcome CaveMum. I've been lurking on these threads for the past year or two, so finally dipping my toe into the water.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 20/09/2021 12:36

Hello Tayto

I’m sure you will be happy here and will bring your own happy thoughts to the thread.

I know nowt about dance (queen of the squaddie two step) but I still have lots to say (not all of it appreciated sometimes!)

Love Craig. Not at all surprised to hear that he is a smasher in real life 🙂

Welcome to the Strictly threads Glitterball

I'm looking forward to next week! I'm glad the launch show was the week before week one this time — a few years ago they did the launch show and then it was two or three weeks to wait before the first live one.

You know the way they show replays in football. Good idea. I think they should have VAR if the judges think there's a misstep. Just like the penalty decisions in the Premier League. That would put the cat among the pigeons.

CaveMum · 20/09/2021 14:11

Yes slo-mo replays would be great, though half the time I’d satisfy myself with some actual footwork shots and no bloody dry ice!

I say this every year, and probably sound like a broken record, but why can’t the Judges each give a mandatory figure they expect to see for each dance style (so 4 per dance) and instead of the bloody annoying “training” VTs before each dance they could show a quick 1 minute long “here’s what you should look out for” demo video from a pro couple.

They wouldn’t have to be difficult figures, just standard ones.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 20/09/2021 14:16

I think that was the original idea behind Len's Lens or whatever they're calling that segment now. Most frequently used to say "they were so in sync!" over slo-mo of a couple doing completely different things. Grin

VAR on the live show though... can you imagine what Brendan or James Jordan would have been like? Grin

Craig could issue red and yellow cards. Grin

There would definitely have been a few McEnroe-esque "You cannot be serious!" moments Grin Grin Grin

Totally agree with this. Let's just get on with it!!!

I thought Judi's joke about getting into the bath wasn't very "BBC early evening entertainment friendly" 😳

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 20/09/2021 15:32

No, I thought that. And it was pre-edited so they could have just cut it out! Or kept the bit that said she needed help getting in the bath, but cut the rest.

Just watched the show - surprisingly I really enjoyed it (don't normally enjoy the launch shows). Everyone just seemed so happy and joyful that it felt like 2 hours of pure escapism!

I think I am going to like this year's cast - although Greg was not what I expected at all and actually thought he was a bit annoying!

My early prediction is either John or Rhys - both looked like they had moves and seemed comfortable on the dancefloor.

With Amy clearly being so starstruck due to being a huge McFly fan, is this the first time one of the dancers has been like that?

sweatervest · 20/09/2021 18:28

tom fletcher really grates on me. eurgh.
judi love isn't funny.
i love all the pros and why isn't the polish pro paired up with someone? she moves like a ninja (says me who can't dance but she's awesome)

i am hearting robert webb even though i've never watched him in anything.
tess still has the personality of a ruler.
dave arch must love his job. musical maestro that he is.
three cheers for strictly coming back!!

Maireas · 20/09/2021 19:03

So nice to see Dave Arch and his wunnerful, wunnerful band, including Trevor! The bassist who always lifts his hat. I think he's great ☺️

Standrewsschool · 20/09/2021 19:30

Never noticed that Trevor (how. Do you know his name?) lifts his hat. Will look out for that.

Maireas · 20/09/2021 19:34

My son is a guitarist. He's seen him on music websites etc
Watch for Trevor lifting his hat when the band are introduced!

EvilRingahBitch · 20/09/2021 19:50

What was the joke Judi made? I remembered it being a bit off-colour for the time slot but have forgotten what it was.

iklboo · 20/09/2021 19:58

Trevor always reminds me of Phill Jupitus.

He's a favourite on these threads.

We all have a little warm spot in our hearts for Trevor, The Man In The Hat.

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 20/09/2021 20:55

I didn't know his name was Trevor... but DD and I always watch for the man in the hat!

charliebear78 · 20/09/2021 21:17

I agree, why wasn't Jowita paired with a Celeb, she is fab.
