Clickbait, it's American but it seems English 🤔

Can't put my finger on what makes me feel this. I thought it was a BBC thing until a few minutes in and then ai thought, wait, these are American accents.

Seemed very American to me. I've just finished it and really enjoyed it.

chinchin77 · 28/08/2021 23:00

It's filmed in Melbourne, Australia and an Australian/ American production!

PearlyBird · 29/08/2021 08:06

Ah, just discovered that. An Australian/ American collaboration. Makes sense.

I liked what that did for the show.

What was it I was picking up on that made me think it felt English despite the accents?

Pia seemed very London 🙃 her haircut? The mixed race family? The fact that Roshan Amiri was "allowed" to be muslim without that bringing any tensions to the plot?

Im watching episode 7 at 08.06 on Sunday morning so it certainly is clickbait!!

Well it was a finite series, with all questions answered in the final episode - as are many typically British ones.
Too many American dramas go on and on and on and on...

PearlyBird · 29/08/2021 15:43

I watched the last episode earlier, i thought I had it figured out episode 5, but i was wrong. I liked it. Very watchable.

Most of the main actors are American, but the houses didn't look like houses in the US, probably because of being filmed in Australia. I really liked it. I binged it in a day, forcing myself to stay up so I could see who the culprit was. I didn't guess it until the last episode.

SenecaFallsRedux · 29/08/2021 15:50

The mixed race family?

There are lots of mixed race families in the US, including the Deep South where I live.

FramboiseRoyale · 29/08/2021 17:00

The fact that Roshan Amiri was "allowed" to be muslim without that bringing any tensions to the plot?

It was strongly implied in one scene in particular that there was tension in the police over Roshan's religion.

AlinaSquareQueen · 29/08/2021 22:16

I just binge-watched this today.

It was extremely enjoyable, and I was gripped from start to finish, even though I had to suspend disbelief in places!

I’d thoroughly recommend it Smile

But fewer on TV??
The moment I saw the mixed race family my brain just filled in the predictive text 'oh this is a BBC thing''. Corrected moments later when I heard the accents.

Yeh, agree, the houses didn't look American. They looked really spacious which is our perception of American but yet something didn't quite look ...........American

It's weird what the subconscious picks up on without even know why.

I loved it. Particularly because you think you know ‘whodunnit’ but turns out there are many twists in the tale!

FramboiseRoyale · 30/08/2021 13:52

True, but there are quite a few interracial families in US TV commercials these days.

I picked up that the gardens looked different from American gardens.
Whattheflecker · 31/08/2021 08:49

I've watched 3 so far and properly gripped.

But. The one thing that's really bugged me is how absent the Mum is from the story. It's her son and no-one seems to give a shit! Is that part of the plot or poor characterisation?!

thisplaceisapigsty · 31/08/2021 09:30

I still have one episode to go and have enjoyed it as it didn't have too many difficult to follow plot lines and (this is important for me) everyone looked very distinctively different. I seem to have watched a few things recently where I get people mixed up because they all look so samey. Vigil for example.

@Whattheflecker I was surprised about the Mum as well, everyone's attitude seemed to be to push her out and Pia seemed to have no relationship at all with her. Pia is the star of it all though, I think, a really good actress.

AlinaSquareQueen · 31/08/2021 10:33

I agree about the actress who plays Pia, she is the star of this.

In real life, she is the partner of the equally brilliant actor, Paul Dano.

FramboiseRoyale · 31/08/2021 15:21

I think that one of the themes of the story line is that sometimes a death brings people who were not close before closer. I like the way the dynamic gradually changes between Pia and Sophie to become warmer and friendlier. I think that is one of the reasons that Sophie is somewhat downplayed in the beginning. The last scene really underscores that evolved dynamic.

ElephantOfRisk · 31/08/2021 18:33

I quite enjoyed it but the lack of video calls from people perfectly capable and who had the technology did my head in. So ethan has to go to the girls house to prove her identity and yet in the same visit they then video chat emma. The woman who apparently never video chatted with "nick"? And many more examples.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 31/08/2021 22:49

All I know is that I really really fancy the detective, I love his intensity 😬👀.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 01/09/2021 00:48

Just finished it, nice ending. Lol at Sophie almost getting canned by Home and Aways Pippa, I guess it really was Australian.

groundcontroltomontydon · 01/09/2021 07:10

I watch Catfish, people really will consider themselves to be dating - or even engaged to - someone they met online but have never met irl, video chatted with or even spoken with because they want to believe what is almost always a perfect fantasy. Nev and Kamie would have solved the case in episode 1!

ohthatbloodycat · 01/09/2021 12:59

I'm watching this but can't stay focused, as it's boring me. Plus, I find Pia slightly annoying.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 01/09/2021 13:00

How funny, DH said this last night as well!

workshy44 · 02/09/2021 12:00

Pia makes it I think- I haven't finished it but I think she is by far the best thing in it. The other actors are a bit blah ..
