The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

I’m not a fan of Suranne Jones either but enjoying this so far.
Paterson Joseph has been in loads of progs since PeepShow!
Think we’ll be seeing more of Martin Compton on the laptop!!

Leftbutcameback · 29/08/2021 22:16

There are a lot of beards, and low lighting, all of which makes sense in a sub but you're right I can't tell all those mariners apart! I didn't even realise it was lovely Sean Evans. Great ending though with the thumb drive and the other detective at gunpoint

AngeloMysterioso · 29/08/2021 22:19

I already know I’m going to have to watch that again to make better sense of it.

mrstea301 · 29/08/2021 22:25

I quite enjoyed it but was also shocked at Burke's early demise!

Will definitely be listening to Shrinepod too, love them!

FreezerBird · 29/08/2021 22:43

Oh I really enjoyed that. I don't know much submarine lingo, but I noticed they got that right from what I could see. I was shouting 'boat!' before the Cox corrected her on that. And the Bomb Shop.

It did seem pretty spacious.

TokyoSushi · 29/08/2021 22:44

We started it late but yes, we enjoyed it too, looking forward to seeing what happens tomorrow!

Piggywaspushed · 29/08/2021 22:45

I have been on a submarine. I grew up by that (fake renamed) base and it was a 'fun' (propaganda) school trip. They are so small inside! They made the tallest boy get into one of the bunks.

Warmduscher · 29/08/2021 22:49

The woman working the canteen knows something too. She was close to tears when they were carrying Burke’s body through.

HelenaJustina · 29/08/2021 22:52

DH was griping about how big the rooms were, two of his cousins are submariners, but we both enjoyed it. He’ll watch through to the end, I may not no staying power

WobblyLondoner · 29/08/2021 22:55

The part that had me rolling my eyes was the flashback to her family drowning, I assume, in a car accident. Why do tv productions overcomplicate things so much? Isn't it enough to have the plot line they have (which is hardly simple) - why on earth do they have to add details that in the real world would presumably make her not the best choice to send underwater in a confined space?

But otherwise quite enjoyed it!

viques · 29/08/2021 22:58

@Warmduscher

The woman working the canteen knows something too. She was close to tears when they were carrying Burke’s body through.
Oh yes, I noticed that too, so another suspect for my “innocent until proved guilty in the final episode list”. Mind you, by the look of that revolting food she is killing them all slowly.
MoreHairyThanScary · 29/08/2021 23:05

I enjoyed it but really pissed off by the rank slides which were wrong, and all the different uniforms! ( some in the modern boiler suits, officers in white shirts ( really !?!) and some in old no. 4! Complete mishmash!

And the sub was twice the size of anything I've ever seen!

But other than that really enjoyed it!

Rollergirl11 · 29/08/2021 23:09

I was confused by the timeline. Was Martin Compton found dead the day after the trawler went down? How did his girlfriend manage to piece together that it was a cover up to do with that? How would Martin Compton have had a chance to communicate with her about it? Or was it pure coincidence?

Xmasbaby11 · 29/08/2021 23:20

Ooh I really enjoyed it. Tense throughout and I love Suranne Jones! She seemed a poor choice for the one to be sent in, as she clearly has been traumatised and is on meds for anxiety. The submarine was so claustrophobic - perfect choice of location for a tense thriller.

Blueberrycreampie · 30/08/2021 01:05

How did his girlfriend know he was dead?

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/08/2021 01:45

Well, I enjoyed* it and am hooked. Had to watch again on iplayer to make sense of it though, because for quite some time I thought it was another sailor who was killed and they were all just pretending it was Compston.

*Apart from Suranne Jones. God knows why she's in everything, her constsnt gurning drives me mad.

hopeishere · 30/08/2021 07:30

I enjoyed it! Agree about the mumbling. I had to shush DH a few times.

She's obviously going to run out of her meds.

Agree about the family backstory and the lesbian relationship- unnecessary padding.

hulahooper2 · 30/08/2021 07:31

So many of you seem to dislike Suranne Jones , I think she’s brilliant

Rollergirl11 · 30/08/2021 07:43

@Blueberrycreampie

How did his girlfriend know he was dead?
The police detective played by Rose Leslie told her.
RampantIvy · 30/08/2021 07:45

I found it very confusing when the man in the bunk near Martin Compston's looked so much like Martin Compston. I wonder if that will prove to be a plot point.

Good point.

So many of you seem to dislike Suranne Jones , I think she’s brilliant

I don't get the Suranne Jones hatred either. I find that anything that has her in is a good watch.

We recorded this, and watched it on time slip, and found that we needed sub titles as well. I struggle with strong accents and struggled a bit to understand the trawlermen.

How did the girlfriend know that her boyfriend was dead? Had he been sending secret messages to her?

RampantIvy · 30/08/2021 07:46

Oh, and I am gripped by it.

hopeishere · 30/08/2021 07:49

I assume his family had been informed and that's how the girlfriend knew?

Ekofisk · 30/08/2021 08:11

@Frogglet

Dh builds subs. He said they are smaller inside than that is.
I wondered about that too.

Having been inside the submarine at the Gosport naval museum this TV version seemed unrealistically spacious?

Ekofisk · 30/08/2021 08:16

I struggle with strong accents and struggled a bit to understand the trawlermen.

There was a TV series about the Peterhead trawler men and that was subtitled even for Scottish viewers.
