The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

The sleeper could be the tall engineer who was in sex education. He looks Russian, good cheekbones.

EsmaCannonball · 14/09/2021 16:16

I guess the point of showing the GRU agent with the perfect British accent was to show that anyone could be a Russian, but I'm going to guess that the person on board the sub is a Russian asset rather than an actual Russian.

GrandmasNightgown · 14/09/2021 18:19

Having an activated sleeper does seem rather more far-fetched than having a traitor.

Might still be the Burke files which give the clue that lets the shore-based investigators work out who it is. Whilst those on Vigil continue unawares

I can't work out if the comms failure is just one of those damned things that goes wrong, or if that was sabotage. Presumably there must have been a family message shortly beforehand to the saboteur giving the instruction. And presumably activating everything else that's to happen on thus voyage.

But would someone really have signed up to a suicide mission?

HenriettaBadger · 14/09/2021 19:09

I always think I'm keeping up, then I come on here and everyone has such great theories and in-depth thoughts. I'm reading them all and changing my mind about the baddie (s?) with every post!
Only 2 left and there is much to unravel...

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 14/09/2021 20:07

Me too @HenriettaBadger I could do with watching it all again!!

It seems too obvious for the coxswain to be the baddie imho

ImFree2doasiwant · 14/09/2021 20:26

What Goldfish? Grin genuinely missed them. I wasntb giving the last episode my full concentration, tried to "rewind" it then realised i couldnt. May have to watch again.

Akire · 14/09/2021 21:00

I’m watching it again I send screen shot when gold fish appear!

Tonkerbea · 14/09/2021 21:13

I think the Comms wire failure was down to the officer who joined Vigil with Amy. Bet he's a wrong un. In cahoots with the coxswain.

I’m still wondering why mc agreed to do it. Big name. Small
Part

On the other controversial event of night. After doing screen shots I’m changing my vote from vote Custard to vote vomit

HenriettaBadger · 14/09/2021 21:57

Blondes I know what you mean about MC. The character is a big part of the plot but his screen time is minimal. Seems odd he was so hyped up in the part. Was it to lure people to watch?

Akira I'm also team vomit. Suggesting poison? Hence the gas masked man at the end (probably coxswain).

escapeyou · 14/09/2021 22:10

The trident sub documentary was very good but in 4 days, there is a dodgy Russian sub, a sailor had to be taken off, there was a fire and then a fridge broke down. Not exactly smooth sailing really.

Newgirls · 15/09/2021 07:30

Who’s MC?

Newgirls · 15/09/2021 07:30

Ah! Martin! The dead one

TimeIhadaNameChange · 15/09/2021 09:03

Surely one of the SONAR people has to be dodgy? I mean they didn't spot the US sub (though that could have been the US tech), almost hit the tanker and then let the sub get too close to that last ship.

Why did Walsh go and check those padlocks, he never did say, did he? Maybe he's got too much time to think. Think he's on to something, or will be on to something soon.

The flashbacks will mean something. Even if it's just a prolinged flashback at the end which makes her realise she has something to fight for and saves herself just in time.

Surprised we've no more cryptic messages from Longacre, though that was leading the way for other such messages.

rougemouse · 15/09/2021 10:51

Just catching up and is anyone else a little 🧐 about the jimmied lock? Surely security would be such that national security wasnt at the mercy of a Bobby pin?

GrandmasNightgown · 15/09/2021 11:15

I think the purpose of locks on board is to stop people setting stuff off by accident - only properly trained engineers being able to get at certain systems. An extra protection against human factor error - ifyou haveto go and get a key and open the right thing up, you're more likely to do the right thing (rather than open the wrong cupboard on autopilot.

After all, everyone on board is meant to be vetted and trustworthy, aren't they?

Yes, the sonar stuff looks v dodgy.

But as shown in the documentary, things go slightly wrong the whole damned time, just by bad luck. It must be very stressful for the crew if things are going wrong apace. So I'm wondering if the revised Russian plot is to have lots of stuff going wrong (by sabotage) to increase those stressors and keep the crew unhappy. Plus of course all these red herrings that might have happened anyhow. And have a good evidence set to show that the boat (and by extension all of that class?) are unreliable (news that they want to leak - and there have been a few leaks going on already)

Then the boat returns to home port, and the Port Haven plot runs again in a different location? Saboteur safely ashore, leaving nuclear disaster cooking and ready to blow in Scotland.

Akire · 15/09/2021 11:22

They looked like locks buy in wilko I did laugh.
Ekofisk · 15/09/2021 11:37

Most major incidents have their roots in a series of little things that go wrong - they just combine to tip something over the edge or force someone into an error.

Idontknowhowtohelpher · 15/09/2021 13:04

The doctor seemed really familiar - and I have now realised that she was Rani, in The Sarah Jane Adventures!

Yep - just worried that the only thing saving the world from mutually assured nuclear destruction is the same padlock that ensured I lost a bike every term at Uni
BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 15/09/2021 16:57

I really enjoyed the submarine documentary on 5. Is it a one off or will there be more episodes, does anyone know?

GrandmasNightgown · 15/09/2021 18:05

There's only the one episode on My5, which is a pity because I was convinced it there were two parts. But there's another one "On board Britain's nuclear submarine, Trident'" where someone called Rob Bell spends 5 nights on HMS Vengeance

iklboo · 15/09/2021 18:10

Oh crikey! So she was. We saw the guy who played Clyde in Magic Goes Wrong the other week.
