I’ve just watched the 3rd one, I am Maria with Lesley Manville. I agree it was fantastic.

MirandaMarple · 07/08/2021 21:23

I thought it might be the menopause?!

Capricornandproud · 07/08/2021 21:28

God almighty… I’m on the 3rd instalment but is excruciating to watch - it’s so well done!

Aquarius1234 · 07/08/2021 23:38

2nd was the weakest but still ok.
Loved the 3rd episode. Crazy realistic acting.

Menopause also crossed my mind.
OverByYer · 08/08/2021 15:21

Yes I’m peri and there were elements of it that really struck a chord with me.
When she wanted to be on her own in the kitchen because she thought the husband was mocking her. Know that feeling

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2021 15:56

She was a bit old for menopausal surely? LM is 65 and their daughter was 28. She was just pissed off with her husband and quite rightly so.

Suranne Jones in I Am Victoria?
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 08/08/2021 16:39

Oh sorry, I thought you were talking about Lesley Manville in episode 3.Grin

LizzieSiddal · 08/08/2021 20:07

Gosh I found this a hard watch, I too could relate to much of it. An absent mother, feeling responsible for relatives, teenage dds, a loving husband who couldn’t do right for doing wrong and then pressure of work, sent me over the edge.

I got better through therapy and agree with others the male counsellors line of “the start of your journey” was the worst bit of the whole thing!

Looking forward to watching more of these.

He wasn't mocking her, though. He was concerned and trying to be light hearted. I don't know why people think he was controlling and gas lighting. He was worried about her state of mind and didn't know what to do. He didn't always say the right thing but people don't always know what to say in this kind of situation. Someone described him as a 'slacker' - how?

She clearly came from a less affluent background and her sister and mother were CFs but she was making herself ill pursuing a kind of impossible perfection and harming her children in the process.

OverByYer · 08/08/2021 20:17

Yes in her head he was mocking her . I agree he was trying his best and I don’t think he was gaslighting her. I actually thought he was very sweet but didn’t know what to do for the best other than try and keep things ‘normal’

CaptainMyCaptain · 08/08/2021 20:19

I agree then.

Delatron · 08/08/2021 20:45

But what about when the sister was there? The sister was the one clearly out of order, she kept following Suranne around and taunting her. The husband wasn’t supportive at all and just had a go at her and told her to get help. But that was when I started watching it so could have misunderstood.

QuattroFormaggi · 08/08/2021 20:52

Yeah this was me. Undiagnosed PND for 4yrs. I scarcely remember my younger child's early years, It's all a bit of a blur. The constant state of frustration with the world because it's not keeping up with me, and my family walking on eggshells scared of when I might explode next. And not wanting my DH to "joke". And over-thinking every single moment, action, thought and word. Omg it was exhausting.
Between Suranne and the writer, they've researched a lot and I'm pretty impressed by how real and uncomfortable it is.

I think he was worried about the children being upset. I did say I don't think he was able to say the right thing all the time but I don't think he was the cause of the problem.
spooney21 · 08/08/2021 23:57

Just watched it. I think the sister was out of order but it showed that Victoria was being taken advantage off and did give clues to childhood.

It was a hard watch and for at least the first 20 minutes I didn't know if one of them was in a coercive relationship. I think it highlights that money is no guarantee of good mental health. Would've liked to see more though in terms of her background and the therapeutic process. I would imagine based on interactions with her sister that they had a turbulent/ traumatic childhood.

BizzyIzzyfruitpie · 09/08/2021 13:37

@MissyB1

Am I the only one that got it? I thought it was a good depiction of a mental health issue. I recognised a lot of the behaviours which I have seen in a friend who is in treatment now. Dh hated it - but he can’t cope with anything about mental health.
Of course you’re not the only one who got it, whatever it may be! It was just crap.
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/08/2021 15:06

I thought it was excellent but I don't like everything spelled out for me.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 09/08/2021 17:12

I am Victoria. Watched it. To be honest, if a camera crew were following me around the house recording my every move I'd be raging too.

Also, was she making/serving blinis (little pancakes) or bellini cocktails. I didn't see any peach juice or bottles of champagne being opened

I think it was blinis she dropped on the floor.

To your comment about the camera crew - have you ever seen a TV drama before? Strange comment.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 09/08/2021 21:47

It was incessant.

CaptainMyCaptain · 09/08/2021 22:08

How else could they film what she was doing? She was acting, not annoyed with the camera crew.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 09/08/2021 22:49

You are meant to presume she can't see the camera crew, do you know how telly dramas work?Grin
