WTF did I just watch? Cunk on Britain

So wasn't really watching the TV...was scrolling on here but this came on after the Olympics highlights and I liked her in Motherland so left it on.
I don't understand her delivery style at all. I'm all for using comedy to engage people with history (Blackadder, Horrible Histories and others are brilliant) but my jaw actually dropped when she made an awful pun about No Man's land being a place for people called Norman 😑. Also, did they know World War One was the 'start of a franchise' and 'shells don't hurt, I've found little ones at the beach'. It was actually DH who turned it off in disgust and he has a very black sense of humour but we both agreed this was horrendously offensive.

Have I missed something? Was this just a bad episode?

Just not your thing. It’s okay not to like it. I find her hilarious!

Malteser71 · 27/07/2021 22:27

It’s the best thing on telly

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 27/07/2021 22:28

It's not intended to get people to engage with history. It's just comedy.

ElizabethTudor · 27/07/2021 22:28

🤣🤣 I love Cunk on Britain. But yeah, if you didn’t find it funny, that’s totally ok.

HollowTalk · 27/07/2021 22:28

I always want to like her but I find her really irritating.

It’s not meant to be historically accurate in any way. The opposite in fact.
Think of it more like Borat I think.
It’s a joke.

ElizabethTudor · 27/07/2021 22:30

I don’t think I’ve seen that episode so I’ll watch it now. Even you saying ‘No man’s land being a place for people called Norman’ makes me smile Op!!

AppleKatie · 27/07/2021 22:31

I love her other characters but I agree Cunk is unwatchable. I don’t find it funny.

Bbq1 · 27/07/2021 22:31

Me and dh think she's brilliant. It's not offensive because she's supposed to be a really dim presenter. It's not deliberately laughing at the war etc.

ADialgaAteMyDog · 27/07/2021 22:31

"the baywatch tapestry" never fails to crack me up. I think it's very clever. The interviews with experts are hilarious

LivingDeadGirlUK · 27/07/2021 22:33

Offensive? Come on OP its fine if you don't find it funny, offensive is a bit over dramatic.

TooManyAnimals94 · 27/07/2021 22:35

Yup...asking deliberately stupid questions is more irritating than entertaining to me.

That’s just reminded me of her calling the Cerne Abbas giant a decorative pervert and saying it’s the second crudest hill, after Benny 🤣

PatsArrow · 27/07/2021 22:35

Cunk on Britain is brilliant. Like others have said, it's in. I way shape or form supposed to inform you about History.

The whole thing is that she's thick and gormless, but occasionally accidentally accurate! It's comedy.

SocialAffairsAndWoodlandFolk · 27/07/2021 22:36

This wasn't my favourite episode but it's hardly offensive.

TooManyAnimals94 · 27/07/2021 22:38

Yeah maybe but referring to a huge human tragedy as 'part of a franchise' just really rubbed me up the wrong way.

All the jokes just fell so flat for me.

She acts like a dimwit and says ridiculous things on purpose. I find her hilarious!
Not your thing though.

TooManyAnimals94 · 27/07/2021 22:41

So if it's not about history, is the point...what if TV presenters were really dim? 😂

I just don't get it! I want to, but I don't.

OP posts:
grafittiartist · 27/07/2021 22:42

I love it!

Nohomemadecandles · 27/07/2021 22:45

It's gone over your head. If you don't find it funny, you don't. I love her.

But I think the horror and disgust from you is even funnier! Sorry.

ChequerBoard · 27/07/2021 22:46

I'm with you OP, I don't get it at all. Not funny, not clever or witty.

TBH if I want to watch stupid people that don't know anything about history or geography I can watch real ones on Love Island.

Marmite27 · 27/07/2021 22:47

We don’t normally like stuff like that, never seen it before but we absolutely howled at it. DH has even requested a series link!

Blankspace4 · 27/07/2021 22:48

I love it!!

King Arthur came a lot didn’t he 🤣

Cavagirl · 27/07/2021 22:52

OP if you want a serious explanation, I think it's sardonic commentary on the banality of modern TV presenting. If you've never seen Charlie Brooker's weekly wipe (where the character started I think) you might miss that context perhaps.

The point is, it's almost believable that some dumb/shit TV presenter somewhere would say it, and some dumb viewer somewhere would believe it. It's the border between absurdity and believable.

I think it's quite amusing but can see it's not to everyone's taste.
