WTF did I just watch? Cunk on Britain

So wasn't really watching the TV...was scrolling on here but this came on after the Olympics highlights and I liked her in Motherland so left it on.
I don't understand her delivery style at all. I'm all for using comedy to engage people with history (Blackadder, Horrible Histories and others are brilliant) but my jaw actually dropped when she made an awful pun about No Man's land being a place for people called Norman 😑. Also, did they know World War One was the 'start of a franchise' and 'shells don't hurt, I've found little ones at the beach'. It was actually DH who turned it off in disgust and he has a very black sense of humour but we both agreed this was horrendously offensive.

Have I missed something? Was this just a bad episode?

Love her in Motherland

But Philomena Cunk, no thanks. Not for us either, both DH and I fast forward her sketches on Charlie Brooker. I personally think the character is shot and totally unfunny. Don't get the 'oh I am so thick' persona

And I bloody loved so called alternative comedy from early 80s onwards 🤷🏻‍♀️

VivaDixie · 27/07/2021 22:53

shit not shot

Malteser71 · 27/07/2021 22:53

Knights of the round table. The round table was like a lazy Susan so the knights could get at the snacks they wanted 😂😂👍😂

OytheBumbler · 27/07/2021 22:58

Oh I thought there was a new episodeSad

I love this show!

"What is time? And how does it get in the clock?" Grin

I suppose comedy is so subjective, one person's idea of hysterical is a another's cringefest.
I find Borat cringey too but I like that he makes a point. The idea of Crank seems to just be to take the piss out of presenters which gets old quite quick IMO.

I love it, smiling just thinking about it! Didn’t realise it was on so thank you! How she stands in random places in her coat and then camera pans away, has me in stitches. I would love to watch people watching it on google box too (vaguely thinking maybe they did once?). Especially if the people watching didn’t get it. But, OP, it’s definitely not meant to engage people in history- in fact it’s probably funnier if you are reasonably knowledgeable about history.

The biggest problem with Philomena Cunk is how perfectly she’s got the intonation of expert presenters on documentaries. I can’t watch Brian Cox without thinking he’s taking the piss now, as all I can hear is her Grin

Miraloma · 27/07/2021 23:13

It's totally subjective, you're right OP. I wouldn't expect anyone to explain what's funny about Miranda or Mrs Browns Boys

So true!

I agree. She's hilarious and very close to the bone (is that a phrase?). Cracks me up.

DoctorTwo · 27/07/2021 23:54

I love Philomena Cunk. I'm sure she's an extension of a character on Jam, the Chris Morris show.

PickAChew · 27/07/2021 23:56

Her delivery style is supposed to be a thick Brian Cox.

Should have read to the end :o
QueenOfPain · 28/07/2021 00:00

She’s brilliant. It’s you.

OytheBumbler · 28/07/2021 00:36

Also,

"Wordsworth wrote, 'I wandered lonely as a cloud' but clouds don't have legs so how was he allowed to get away with that stuff?"

I'm remembering all my favourite bits due to this thread. GrinGrin

MyDcAreMarvel · 28/07/2021 00:40

Absolutely love Cunk, I think you are missing the point of the show op.

TopBlogger · 28/07/2021 00:42

It's the stupid thing she does with her mouth that is so irritating.

Pumpkinstace · 28/07/2021 00:43

I love her but couldn't get into 'mandy'

Silvergreen · 28/07/2021 00:46

Love Diane Morgan in everything. Cunk is fantastic.

Silvergreen · 28/07/2021 00:47

It's on iplayer if anyone wants to watch it because of this thread 😂

SeeYaBeYa · 28/07/2021 00:48

I love her! "It's like being there, but made of wool." 😂😂

There is a point to be made about watching thick people on telly talk about things they don't understand, plus the occasional devastatingly accurate insight just dropped in back handed. She's a joy.

SqueakyPeaks · 28/07/2021 00:51

Oh gawd I hated it. We had to turn it off we were cringing so badly.

Silvergreen · 28/07/2021 00:53

Flint tools: back then they were cutting edge because they had a cutting edge 😂

SqueakyPeaks · 28/07/2021 00:53

And not cringing because it was deliberately stupid and offensively dim commentary. More that it was without skill or nuance. I love satire. I love clever comedy. This was neither.

ArchbishopOfBanterbury · 28/07/2021 01:06

I quite like Philomena Cunk on lots of topics, but I do think such a tragic and horrendously fatal topic as the world wars, should be treated with a bit more respect. It does feel inappropriate to joke about, for me. But, a lot of people disagree and love that sort of humour (so games like Cards Against Humanity are bestsellers).
Not my thing, I do think some topics are off limits for comedy.
