Annabel found it all too much too didn't she? That's why she retired so young. It's even worse now with social media and everything.

Jane she did- wasn't she only about 21?

Fizzywinegum · 05/07/2021 21:29

Yes Jane it was hard then but must be so much harder now - the BBC haven’t really helped with the hype though Hmm

Not sure how helpful Mac is being in this discussion

Raahh · 05/07/2021 21:29

21/22?

Poor Emma.

I hope she's ok.

JaneJeffer · 05/07/2021 21:29

That's right Raahh. I hope Emma won't dwell on this.

I get what Mac is saying though Fizzy. He doesn't sugar coat things.

Someone on Saturday Henman? Maybe! was like calm down everyone, like why do you guys always get so hyper at times like this

Raahh · 05/07/2021 21:31

Fizzy I have no idea what point John was trying to make. I'm sure he was trying to be helpful, but it came across as the opposite.

Meltinthemiddle · 05/07/2021 21:34

What did mac say I missed that but?

snowballer · 05/07/2021 21:38

@TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme

I thought she looked unwell when she came out. Under her eyes was very dark and she didn't look the same as she did in the last match
Yes I thought this too - she looked quite grey faced. Starting a massive match at 8pm is full on. Hope she's ok

Fizzy agree . John McEnroe was an arse ..my son was really annoyed. As a Mum I think Emma was put under too much pressure!
GlencoraP · 05/07/2021 21:44

I think he made some good points, especially about how after his first year he went to college and just took time understand what being a professional player meant.

I hope she’s ok , all my mum instincts were raised when she came out , pale , dark circles . It’s not like she has been able to see her family at all since she went into the bubble , she’s stuck in the hotel, she’s not used to the tour and the pace of tour life and the pressure of being stuck with everyone , not to mention the massive level of media attention.

Mogloveseggs · 05/07/2021 21:45

McEnroe was awful then. Dismissing her injury/illness and talking over annabel too.

GlencoraP · 05/07/2021 21:47

As a Mum I think Emma was put under too much pressure!

But this was exactly what JM was saying , and he’s right she shouldn’t get a wild card for the uS open, it wouldn’t be fair on other players and she’s not ready she needs to work her way into the tour , it’s a dog eat dog environment a pressure cooker especially with Covid bubbles. She needs to take it slower .

Mogloveseggs · 05/07/2021 21:47

That's how it came across to me anyway. But then dd tells me I'm overprotective so that might be coming out too

GlencoraP · 05/07/2021 21:48

The British media have wreaked the careers of so many young tennis players by putting too high levels of expectations on them . I think he was just bursting the bubble a bit

JaneJeffer · 05/07/2021 21:49

I thought John was spot on in what he said.

OP posts:
Fizzywinegum · 05/07/2021 21:59

I do have a lot of respect for Mac and I think he talks a lot of sense - I just thought he was a bit clumsy in trying to express himself tonight

I agree the British media have a lot to answer for in building players up and then knocking them down - hope that doesn’t happen this time

Both John and Annabel were realistic - Emma’s had a good run at Wimbledon but will need to grind it out on the tour now to go further

JaneJeffer · 05/07/2021 22:11

I agree he doesn't always put things across the best way. He needs Cedric there to translate

@Meltinthemiddle he said the pressure was a lot for an 18 year old to deal with and he had taken a year out after his first Wimbledon and that in the long run this may be a good thing for Emma.

I thought McEnroe was an arse. He didn’t know 100% that it was a panic attack and not an injury- we still don’t. Assuming it was anxiety related, he came across obnoxiously. He could have made points about the pressure without just making it seem like he thinks she bottled it. There were some sensible things in what he was saying but is delivery was off in my view.

Maireas · 05/07/2021 22:22

It could just have been a stomach problem? I remember reading that when there's a long wait for a match it's hard to time food and drink. She has no experience, so it's even harder.

Mogloveseggs · 05/07/2021 22:24

Well my day off tomorrow isn't a day off any more Sad so I'll only just catch the barty match.
Manic Monday it certainly was. I feel for the women's players that's not a lot of rest in between matches.

magimedi · 05/07/2021 22:37

I reckon Emma either had a severe panic attack or IBS. I suffer from both from time to time & it looked, to me, so like that.

So pleased Felix AA won. I don't like Zverev, allegations of domestic abuse & then abandoning next girlfriend & child early on in the child's life.

Would love to see a Kerber/Barty final - is that possible or will they meet in the semis?

MajesticWhine · 05/07/2021 23:11

Looks like Kerber and Barty are in the same half and could meet in the semi final

Berrettini vs FAA looks like the pick of the men's QF and I think Berrettini will win.
