Spiral: should I do it?

DP and I love a subtitled thriller but the last couple of things we've tried on Walter Presents have been a bit meh. I want something that makes me go 'wow'.
Have heard so much about this programme, great reviews, people love it etc. Never seen it. I know there's about a hundred seasons. Is it worth taking the plunge and starting it?

If it’s the Spiral that’s on the iplayer then I highly recommend it. 😊

Skatingpark97 · 10/06/2021 23:22

It's fantastic but you can start a bit further in at Series 3 or 4. You are lucky to have it all ahead of you!

RampantIvy · 10/06/2021 23:24

It's brilliant.

Myneighboursnorlax · 10/06/2021 23:26

I love subtitled shows and had been so excited about Spiral after hearing such good things about it, but I couldn’t get past the first few episodes. I do seem to be alone in this though!

zeddybrek · 10/06/2021 23:27

Love it, go for it! I'm jealous you have all those episodes to watch. Start at series 1 as you learn more about the key characters Gilous, Roban and my favourite Josephine.

midsomermurderess · 11/06/2021 12:00

I'd say yes. Series 1 is not as good as the rest, and one of the characters even ends up with his name bring changed. I think the writers didn't know if it would go beyond one series so it starts out a bit schlocky. Bear that in mind, it does get better.

IntermittentParps · 11/06/2021 13:17

Thanks all! You're amazing.

Nonbio46, yes, that one.

midsomer, that's so helpful. I often wonder how long to persevere with TV shows.

at the thought of watching so much. Grin

I watched one of the short standalone series which I enjoyed but couldn't get into the main series. I might give it another go on these recommendations. Did you watch DNA? I think it was Danish and was on BBC4 not long ago. That was enjoyably bonkers Grin

BIWI · 11/06/2021 13:25

Spiral is amazing. I'm always put off by sub-titles, but honestly within the first few minutes you'll totally forget about them.

midsomermurderess · 11/06/2021 14:38

What were the short standalones of Spiral, Bunny?

Alwaystheplusone · 11/06/2021 16:38

It’s amazing! You’ll love it but start from the very beginning x

mrssmiling · 11/06/2021 16:56

Yes! From the beginning. I do envy you having it all to discover! 😀

CheerfulBunny · 11/06/2021 17:26

@midsomermurderess Ooo I don't know now. I thought it was a spin off from Spiral. It was definitely french and on BBC4 but according to Wikipedia there's only been the 8 full series. It started with some human remains being found at the foot of a wind turbine and had some occult themes. There was a beautiful red haired woman with memory loss..

CheerfulBunny · 11/06/2021 17:32

There's a chance it might've been this Blush : en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witnesses_(TV_series)

Tidypidy · 11/06/2021 17:38

Spiral is magnifique! Super opportunity to learn lots of very rude French words you were never taught at school!

DoubleTweenQueen · 11/06/2021 17:40

Yes yes yes. Do it. All 8 series. It's really worth it for the character progression.
I've seen it all twice :)

DoubleTweenQueen · 11/06/2021 17:43

@CheerfulBunny Could it have been 'The Killing'? (Danish) Also highly recommended!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 11/06/2021 17:45

Another vote for start at the beginning. We've only watched the first 2, and we're super excited as everyone says it gets better. We thought first 2 were pretty good.
Also love the Bridge

CheerfulBunny · 11/06/2021 17:54

@DoubleTweenQueen No, but that was utterly amazing. I used to binge watch it until 3am on my phone in bed! So compelling, I was addicted.

CheerfulBunny · 11/06/2021 17:59

This was also brilliant but totally bonkers: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08yrc3v a Spanish thriller called I Know Who You Are - quite soapy and hysterical but so many twists and surprises. Not available on I player but if you can find it, excellent. Taught me a lot about the Spanish legal system Grin

User657849 · 11/06/2021 20:08

I’m so jealous… wish I could watch it for the first time again…

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 11/06/2021 20:20

I have just started watching this, saw lots of recommendations on here for it and wanted something long to watch to get me through the month of football taking over the TV, I'm going on holiday in our caravan next week and will download it so I can watch on my iPad while DH is watching football in the evening. On episode 3 and it seems good.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 13/06/2021 10:19

Yes
It’s a commitment

But worth it

It also gets less gory

CornishPastyDownUnder · 13/06/2021 10:32
