Is anyone else watching this? I was all eurgh, again with Joss Whedon pretending to be feminist, then we subscribed to HBO to watch Mare of Easttown and I decided to give it a go. First decided it was utter shite but then suspended my disbelief, ignored anachronisms Wink and now am weirdly hooked. Surprised at how alert I have to be to catch all the little clues and that there is still so much we haven't learned about the main characters. Am very fond of the actress who plays Amalia True, Laura Donnelly (Ireland represent!).

Oh, I just came on here to see if anyone had mentioned The Nevers. I saw it mentioned by an instagrammer I have just started following, Bernadette Banner, and she mentioned it's coming to the U.K. on 17th May and I watched a trailer on YouTube and now I really want to watch it, but I don't have Sky or Now TV and am now wondering if I can justify paying for Now TV, given I already have Amazon Prime and Britbox subs. Do you think The Nevers is worth it?

I understand Whedon left the series last year and they have a new screenwriter, Philippa Goslett, for the remaining four episodes of the first series, which will apparently be filmed sometime this year, but it's a bit frustrating to have to wait for the rest of the series. Maybe I should wait until we know when the whole 10 episodes are available.

Ha great minds! Hm no I wouldn’t pay for it specially but it might be a draw if I wanted to see something else from a streaming site iyswim.

Laura Donnelly is so good! I was talking to my daughter about it today discussing theories Grin and I’m very much up for bandying some about here too Grin but to be fair I have more questions than theories at the moment!

Mrs True is a time traveller I feel. Far from the future. She sometimes says things like when she corrected Penance about the amplifier. She knew what it was called now.

Sarah/Maladie and Amalia/Molly were employed by Mrs Bidlow.
Think the Mad American Dr did something to Maladie at Mrs Bidlow - wasn't she coming out of a posh house when the Angel came?
Did Amalia leave to marry and have a violent marriage? Did she kill her husband then try and kill herself?

Did

banivani · 13/05/2021 17:40

A time traveller! But the comments about her beIng someone who sheds her skin and when she said this isn’t my face to the beggar king, how do they fit in?

I’ve rewatched it now because I’d missed loads of small things like your one floating the bucket in the last episode there.

OP posts:
Maggiesgirl · 13/05/2021 21:52

I cant decide how it not being her face fits in. Is it that the traveller ( Mrs True) is in side Molly's body, so the face is Molly's not Mrs True?

banivani · 14/05/2021 08:22

So Molly jumped in the water and killed herself and left space for mrs True to use the body?

She said she was thought insane at first. When did the shift from poor to posh happen? Haha so confusing!

OP posts:
Maggiesgirl · 14/05/2021 09:46

Can't work out the shift. Nor wht she sleeps on the floor in the dormitory. Unless to protect the others?

I'm hoping things will become more clear in the next episode. But then we have to wait till later in the year for more!

Laura Donnelly will be on Sunday Brunch this week. Cant wait to see if she gives any clues

AlanThePig · 15/05/2021 13:00

I watched the first one the other night. Have to say howled with laughter at the comment 'she's not too big for a smack' and then she stood up and was 11ft tall. Properly amused me.

I did spend most of it confused yet enamoured with the set, the costumes and James Nortons arse though. We've been a bit naughty and have (cough) acquired (cough) all that have aired in the USA so far, so hopefully it will start coming together a bit.

Maggiesgirl · 15/05/2021 20:55

@AlanThePig that coughs catching 😉

cough sweet? 🍬😀

Just watched the second one, much better and a bit easier to follow. Many laugh out loud moments as well. Still enthralled ith the detailing the sets and the costuming.
Believe Joss Wheildon departs after episode two and from bits I've garnered it gets a lot better without him directing.

James Norton was teasing a huge twist for episode 6 which airs US tomorrow night. Split season as well so the remaining six will come in the autumn. No spoilers obviously as I appreciate we're all going to be in different places with it.

banivani · 16/05/2021 12:55

I felt that in the fifth episode there was a lot of talking about the galiwhatsits as if they were established and I kind of missed the part where they became known to all and sundry. Did they accidentally cut a scene out or was I distracted again? Looking forward to the episode tomorrow I’m hoping for some explanations - or waiting for the autumn will be tough! Still feeling a little lost. ;)

Can't say I was gripped by the first couple of eps.
You might enjoy The Irregulars on Netflix for a different take on a familiar story - Holmes, Watson and the Baker Street Irregulars

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 16/05/2021 16:32

James Norton's arse you say. That might well be worth the price of Now TV.

banivani · 16/05/2021 16:38

I watched the Irregulars too but I didn't think it very good - the characters didn't engage me, it was too far from the Sherlock idea IMO to be a successful pastiche or whatever and most importantly I thought the storyline didn't fulfil any promise. (I still watched the whole thing because I was massively procrastinating.) Netflix shows have become very poor I feel, the plots are too over-simplified which makes the shows just look like vehicles for inclusive casting (something I am very much for, but if there's no substance to the shows it's just insulting the actors, frankly). I was disappointed, had high hopes and love a Sherlock story.

Joss Whedon, for all his fucking faults and there do seem to be many, has an odd gift for creating something that at least manages to seem so layered it engages me and has interesting, quick and witty dialogue. That scene where True and Penance just walk off and pretend to be one another (putting on accents) to show what they think the other one is thinking was very clever - no exposition and build up, just right into it. Sigh. I am not proud of it, but I enjoy a Whedon script. Except Dollhouse - that was too obviously misogynist in a violent way.

Worth. Every. Penny.
ElderMillennial · 16/05/2021 17:22

I saw a preview / trailer for this earlier and so I thought it wasn't out yet. I'm going to look for it now.

I think it starts on Monday here in the UK on sky Atlantic. We're being a bit naughty and procuring from other sources.

Episode three. The water scene. That must have taken some work to film. Amazing.

ElderMillennial · 17/05/2021 08:43

Oh I see @AlanThePig

banivani · 17/05/2021 19:43

Just watched ep 6 and loved it - will wait a day or so so I don’t spoil anything - finally all the explanations it was great!!!

Maggiesgirl · 18/05/2021 21:45

Wow oh wow. Brilliant. Arrrrggghhhhh god knows when Part 2 will start.

banivani · 18/05/2021 22:13

Right!? The time travel guesses were correct! I was so pleased to see Claudia Black too I loved her in Stargate back in the day. She’s underrated and is aging so well. Great face! I loved the typical Whedonesque dialogue with all the futuristic slang in the beginning, will have to rewatch that!

OP posts:
Maggiesgirl · 19/05/2021 06:47

Yep going to go back and start from the beginning again.
