Is anyone else watching this? I was all eurgh, again with Joss Whedon pretending to be feminist, then we subscribed to HBO to watch Mare of Easttown and I decided to give it a go. First decided it was utter shite but then suspended my disbelief, ignored anachronisms Wink and now am weirdly hooked. Surprised at how alert I have to be to catch all the little clues and that there is still so much we haven't learned about the main characters. Am very fond of the actress who plays Amalia True, Laura Donnelly (Ireland represent!).

@banivani might be worth asking mnhq to put a spoiler warning in the title now you’ve posted that. It’s not all aired in the uk and that’s a pretty major spoiler there. I’m still on episode three....

banivani · 19/05/2021 10:10

Oh I see someone has done that already now, sorry! I didn't think of it, I don't read things if I don't want stuff spoiled myself (simplest).

I desperately wanted to watch .this.... but like others, Joss bloody Whedon. Chewed my nails. and gave in after the first ep. I think the fact that he has worked so closely with Jane Espensen for so many years made it possible to smoothly allow for his exit.

It's a gorgeous series to watch. There is so much going on, and the scenery catches your eye, ensuring that you miss things happening. I like the explanations at the end, too.

Great cast. I love the quality in this.

The last episode was: WTF???

Still, absolutely wonderful, I think!

Ooh, episode 6 was fab! I've loved it all but that was really great.

Great to see Claudia Black, took me back to Farscape days! Joss Whedon might be a scumbag but he really knows how to make good telly. Still, now we can enjoy his new world without him. Laura Donnelly is so good but so are they all actually. The look of glee on her face when she flashed forward to having sex with the doctor made me lol. Don't want to wait for the rest. Oh well, something else to look forward to...

I just watched the Bernadette Banner YouTube about it. I like her stuff but I really am done with the corset talk. Still, it was her critique of the corsets that took me to Outlander so I'll let her off.

Laura Donnelly as Molly just broke my heart. Poor Molly. Sad She's so great.

I agree, Josh may be dubious but he certainly creates good characters and stories and gets great actors to work with him.

I made Youtube stop recommending me Bernadette Banner videos because she does my head in Grin - I tried watching this one but the 15th time she said corset I wanted to smash something.

Funnily enough my daughter was really disappointed with ep 6 - she felt the solutions were boring and she wanted a pure period piece.

That scene where True and Penance just walk off and pretend to be one another (putting on accents) to show what they think the other one is thinking was very clever - no exposition and build up, just right into it. Sigh. I am not proud of it, but I enjoy a Whedon script.

Absolutely!

Have just finished the first six - and am praying for more. Loved pretty much everything - not least all the filming around the Inns of Court.

(Also, as a Dr Who fan (Sad) I really want someone to set me an essay comparing this and Misfits, and possibly The Umbrella Academy, to each other ...)

Sad Grin

I honestly have no one else to talk about this show with ...

banivani · 08/06/2021 21:31

Me neither! One of my daughters watches it, granted, but she went a bit off it because she didn't like episode 6.

How do you mean comparison to Misfits and Umbrella Academy?

OP posts:
MayIDestroyYou · 08/06/2021 21:41

I've watched them all in fairly quick succession - and they all seem to have grown, more or less, from the Dr Who trope of the time travelling saviour of the world. Except Misfits, so far. I had to give up on that two episodes into S5 as it seemed to have lost itself. So maybe that's an outlier. But the other two definitely felt like the Dr Who episodes when they arrive in Victorian England.

(Misfits always seemed like a long audition for another TARDIS companion. But mainly interesting for What All the Actors Did Next.)

banivani · 08/06/2021 22:06

Misfits was great S1 and grand S2 but then turned to absolute rubbish, I was so disappointed. I associated the alien (who does the travelling) with the aliens in the language film with Amy Adams - sort of non-linear entity? My daughter like I mentioned didn’t like it, she thought it a tired trope ;) but I don’t think I care that much, the tired trope of the happy hooker bothered me a lot more if so.
