Quite excited for this to come to real telly because I am the only person I know who’s ever watched it - it was on AMC which came as part of my BT package a couple of years ago and it’s one of the best things I’ve seen in ages.

It’s about a Victorian naval expedition searching for the North West Passage but has a bit of a horror twist on the real world events - it’s harrowing in parts so you have to be feeling quite strong, but honestly the characterisation and the acting is breathtakingly good - I fell in love with so many of the characters.

Ciaran Hinds, Jared Harris and Tobias Menzies are the senior leads all playing a blinder.

Will look out for this, thanks

Peccary · 27/02/2021 19:45

Looking forward to catching this. I recently read the Michael Palin book Erebus about the real expedition

DarkDarkNight · 03/03/2021 18:12

Thanks for the recommendation, I will check it out.

ShallWeStartTheMeeting · 03/03/2021 18:32

I read the book a while ago. Quite harrowing, right?

AllAboutHallowsEve · 03/03/2021 18:55

I've also watched it. I thought it was one of the best things I've ever seen. Highly recommend.

Bloodypunkrockers · 03/03/2021 20:02

Looks interesting

I don't know anything about the real case so looking forward to watching it "blind"

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 03/03/2021 20:04

I'm in Ireland and it aired on our national tv channel not long ago. DH and I both really enjoyed it. Be warned though, the final episode is extremely gruesome throughout!

Balaur · 03/03/2021 20:04

I'm watching too. I'm a wuss so hoping it's not too horror-ish but the cast is amazing and I love historical stuff, so I'm determined to give it a go.

Robieuni · 03/03/2021 20:49

I’ve seen this. One of the best things I’ve seen.
Wish I could scrub it from my brain so I could watch it all over again.
Loved some of the character. Blankie ❤️

noeffingwayyyy · 03/03/2021 20:54

I'm so glad I just saw this thread, now settled down waiting for it to start!! Thanks OP

Piggywaspushed · 03/03/2021 21:46

If you haven't read Erebus , I really recommend it. Haven't read The Terror.

I thought this was a good episode seeing as no one goes anywhere !

I am a tad confused as to who is on which ship though.

Winniewonka · 03/03/2021 23:08

Thoroughly enjoyed this and so well acted. Nice to see the guy from Motherland as the ship's surgeon. Based on true events from the novel by Dan Simmons.

applespearsbears · 03/03/2021 23:24

Just watched the first three episodes and although good I'm really struggling with the mumbled naval talk and background music - I only understand about a third of what is said so feeling like I'm missing a lot

Nith · 04/03/2021 01:21

Watched the beginning. I could see that objectively it looked good and has an excellent cast, but ultimately decided it's just not my sort of thing.

Piggywaspushed · 04/03/2021 06:54

apples, I put subtitles on!

applespearsbears · 04/03/2021 07:05

Good idea!

ExcusesAndAccusations · 04/03/2021 08:44

I always have subtitles on anyway.

AnyFucker · 04/03/2021 08:49

So, the 1st two episodes were on bbc2 last night and the rest are on IPlayer ? How many are there ?

ExcusesAndAccusations · 04/03/2021 09:41

Ten. Brace yourself, fill the hot water bottle and make some hot chocolate.

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 04/03/2021 09:48

Are the rest also being shown on BBC2?

awaynboilyurheid · 04/03/2021 10:12

I enjoyed this last night but had to do the hide behind cushion at a couple of scenes!
Great cast and hadn’t thought about using sub titles but will use them as it was hard to hear what the young sailors were saying, good tip!

PuppyMonkey · 04/03/2021 11:06

The whole lot is on iplayer now, I watched the first two on bbc2 and haven’t been so gripped by a programme in ages. Wonderful stuff.

Agree about it being much better with the subtitles on! Grin

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 04/03/2021 20:53

If anyone is interested The Lighthouse (not the Robert Pattinson one) on BBC iplayer/catch up was really good, similar era and feel to The Terror of isolation at sea and based on a true story.

applespearsbears · 04/03/2021 22:34

Subtitles work!

AnyFucker · 05/03/2021 00:32

There is a (kind of) sequel “Infamy” I believe
