Bereft finishing the West Wing, what next?

I have just two episodes left of the West Wing and am distraught! I have adored every minute. Can anyone recommend anything to fill the void? I'm after something with well drawn characters you grow to love, nothing with loads of death or gore, or too tense at the moment.
Other things I've loved have been Suits, Bodies, line of duty (though that might be too tense for me currently), House of Cards, hospital ones like Grays Anatomy/ER but find they get a bit formulaic after a while, No Angels. Any suggestions?

Game of Thrones
The Witcher
The Mandalorian
White Collar

and I wonder why I never seem to get anything done anymore ;)

I am close to finishing TWW (for the second time). I’m then going to re watch Studio 60 on the sunset strip, then the Newsroom. Love Sorkin/John Wells so much.

Then ER.

PurpleDaisies · 01/02/2021 19:49

If you don’t mind subtitles, Borgen is excellent.

Tinseltrauma · 01/02/2021 19:51

Not sad @Yesbutno , I find I'm thinking about them all the time in a kind of 'I wonder how CJ is getting on' way. Lockdown obvs getting to me!

Definitely watch the other two Aaron Sorkin series, not up to the West Wing standard but very good. But be warned you will be left wanting more.

I also loved Friday Night Lights and The Good Wife (and the Good Fight which was fairly bonkers but had some fantastic moments, will probably date quickly, was very much Trump era viewing).

But take time to mourn because there is nothing like watching the West Wing for the first time.

For something totally different and not necessarily on brief, but because it has Rob Lowe in it (not from the beginning though) I’d recommend Parks and Recreation. It’s comedy, utterly stupid but hilarious. It is not high brow at all but one of my favourite slightly guilty pleasures.

GrouchyKiwi · 01/02/2021 20:00

Parks and Rec is great. Lesley Knope is the best character.

Chocolatewins · 01/02/2021 20:01

I didn't know lovely lovely Rob Lowe was in Parks and Recreation. Might give it a try.
utterly stupid but hilarious feels like a good call right now.

DianaT1969 · 01/02/2021 20:23

Borgen, a Danish political drama. I loved it with subtitles, but it's available dubbed on Netflix.

The Good Wife

UK TV police drama - Unforgotten

Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul

orchidsonabudget · 01/02/2021 20:29

Oh god the west wing is amazing

OhioOhioOhio · 01/02/2021 21:31

Is the dubbing on Netflix good quality, for Borgen?

Meredithgrey1 · 01/02/2021 21:32

Madam secretary and the good wife are both good.

user1477249785 · 01/02/2021 21:44

Oh we are also loving 'the bureau' right now

Watercoloursky · 01/02/2021 21:49

I was going to suggest Mad Men, but I see you've already watched it... I'm also really enjoying the Marvellous Mrs Maisel on Prime, more great characters there (and more lovely clothes, if you enjoyed that about Mad Men!)

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 01/02/2021 21:55

Came on to suggest most of those already mentioned!

Especially yes to the Sorkin series mentioned and also

The Good Wife
Friday Night Lights (it’s so so so good)
This Is Us (like FNL, you’d think it’d be schmultzy shite but the actors and script are excellent).

Also, for funny - Weeds is laugh out loud good. It stars Mary Louise Parker (Amy Gardner - Josh’s girlfriend).

orchidsonabudget · 02/02/2021 00:34

Yes to many of these
Damages
The wire
I am toying with early ER on All4 which I didn't watch because I think I was doing something else when it was first on. Young clooney is delightful in the trailer

Otherplans · 02/02/2021 00:37

Berlin Station is good (my first love is always TWW though)

GinaJaffacake · 02/02/2021 00:42

Nothing. There’s nothing like it! I’ve been searching for 10yrs!
There’s great television and then there’s The West Wing.

GinaJaffacake · 02/02/2021 00:46

I’ve enjoyed listening to TWW podcast with Joshua Malina who played Will.

snowliving · 02/02/2021 00:50

The wire is great.
Darker but really helps explain the USA.

carnations23 · 02/02/2021 00:55

I went back and rewatched it 🙈 So in the space of 18 days I watched it twice 🤣🤣

Now I'm watching British Shameless and The O.C.

Tinseltrauma · 02/02/2021 20:50

Thanks everyone - some great recommendations there! I'm in awe of the poster who watched it twice in 18 days, that's a real fan 😍
I've so enjoyed it and totally agree with others, there's nothing like it. My favourite tv ever .
