Anyone watched it?

We’re a few episodes in and I need to know how perilous/upsetting/violent it is as the last one had me hiding behind a pillow.

It's brilliant stuff.

Some bits are violent, there's loads of peril but the main characters don't die. It's a bit like Star Trek in that respect.

peachgreen · 01/02/2021 14:19

Oh it's BRILLIANT. It is quite violent but with a few exceptions I'd say season 1 is about as violent as it gets. There is quite a lot of peril. There are a few upsetting scenes but overall I'd say it's more enjoyable and exciting than upsetting. I don't like gratuitous violence but I really enjoyed The Americans.

theleafandnotthetree · 01/02/2021 14:22

It's amazing, one of my favourite series ever. One of the great joys of it is the sense of peril and dread, that it never goes for the easy resolution and the characters remain very true throughout. Elizabeth is one of the most interesting female characters I've ever seen portrayed in screen

BigBadVoodooHat · 01/02/2021 14:24

This is one of my favourite shows of all time! And I say that as someone who is very squeamish about TV shows.

Stick with it, it just gets better and better.

It' a few year since I last watched it, I think I might rewatch it this month Smile

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/02/2021 14:26

Thank you both, okay, will stick with it!

It’s the peril rather than any overt violence which upset me. It was the one where the children hitchhiked? Really made me feel awful.

I watched game of thrones - barely made it through the really hideous bits but it was worth it, Scandal - shocking violence but not much peril, Spooks quite recently. But something about this gave me that sinking nauseous feeling I don’t enjoy.

The writing is brilliant. Really really great. It reminds me slightly of Homeland, a similar vibe somehow. Possibly also the Russians Grin

Matthew Rhys is amazing. So versatile yet always the same hair in every role.

OP, can I ask what service you're watching it on, I could totally watch it again

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/02/2021 14:27

X posted with more fans! Lovely stuff, sticking with it. Thank you!

It’s on Prime leaf.

Outstanding series, loved it. Didn't think it was particularly violent.

Catnuzzle · 01/02/2021 14:28

Loved it here too! Well worth watching again from the beginning I think, now I know what happens! So much stuff I missed first time round.

theleafandnotthetree · 01/02/2021 14:33

@AnneLovesGilbert

It’s on Prime leaf.
Thanks OP. And enjoy (although I wouldn't say I always enjoyed it, even though it was amazing, I had some of the same feelings of dread and tension watching some episodes as I did watching The Sopranos)
AnneLovesGilbert · 01/02/2021 14:35

Ah now I think I missed the boat for Sopranos. Always meant to watch it, tried a couple and nearly fell asleep. My god the endless muffled talking.

Am I wrong on that though and is it worth revisiting?

I’m partial to a bit of mob drama. Loved the godfathers and everything else Puzo did.

OP posts:
theleafandnotthetree · 01/02/2021 14:52

You should definitely give The Sopranos another go, there's nothing I can say that hasn't been said already about its brilliance. Probably the original and best anti-hero (Tony obviously) in the golden age of television.

peachgreen · 01/02/2021 20:52

Oh I hated that bit too @AnneLovesGilbert - that sort of thing doesn't happen again to my recollection.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/02/2021 20:59

Thanks peach. Worse things have happened already but something about it - the numerous horrible potential outcomes - gave me the heebie jeebies. Should spies be allowed to have children?! That was the single worst thing about Spooks. The incessant bloody peril for the children.

I've watched it twice!

Such a complex series about morals, relationships, family, motivations, notions of home...

It's also got a proper story arc with a well thought through ending.

And Oleg Burov 😉

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/02/2021 21:37

I’m trying to work out what I’ve seen Granny in before. And if I admire her or despise her. Tricky.

Oh Oleg. Oleg, Oleg, Oleg. I mean nobody is hotter than Philip Jennings but he's up there.

korawick12345 · 03/02/2021 14:51

I have just discovered that Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys are now a couple in real life!

One of the show runners describes Season 1 as watching Matthew Rhys fall in love.

The season when she's pregnant IRL is hilarious for the standing in front of things scenes - once you've spotted it, it's all you can see.

theleafandnotthetree · 03/02/2021 15:14

They have been together for years, since not too long into filming beginning. The chemistry between them is palpable although they'd be well able to fake it if they needed it, terrific actors both

Cam2020 · 03/02/2021 15:26

Oh, I loved this show! One of my favourites, ever, real sitting on the edge of your seat stuff at times. Brilliantly complex characters, brilliant executed. I really admired the fact the writers refrained from the standard Russia = bad, America = good.

PawFives · 03/02/2021 16:47

I loved this show, brilliant acting, writing, characters (agree with what a PP said about Elizabeth). A shame it’s not better known. Will have to watch again.

She constantly wears coats inside apart from anything else 😆

One of my favourite series of all time. The ending is amazing.
