How scary is Stranger Things?

ThePricklySheep · 24/01/2021 20:13

In need to watch it to see if my DD can but I’m a bit of a wuss. For example the Haunting of Hill house clips that I saw on gogglebox were too scary. And that thing with Jude law, The Third Day was also too horrible. I managed The OA. Just.
So what do you think? Grin

I am a wuss... I loved it. I am a person who can’t go on haunted house rides at a fair Blush

Definitely had to have my hands over my ears/eyes in parts but the few scary bits weren’t that bad. The soundtrack makes it for me...

Enjoy!

Similar to Hill House I'm afraid!

doctorhamster · 24/01/2021 20:15

If you're easily scared it's scary iyswim. My 13 year old doesn't find it scary at all but if I let my 11 year old watch it she'd have nightmares!

ThePricklySheep · 24/01/2021 20:15

*I! I need to watch it.

Not remotely scary it's good though.

Twobrews · 24/01/2021 20:17

Not helpful, just waiting for opinions Grinas I want to watch it but will be watching alone and know I won't be able to sleep if it's scary.
There's still two Luther episodes I can't get out my head!

Two of my friends said it was ok, but they seem to like scarier stuff than me.

redcandlelight · 24/01/2021 20:20

the first series is not too bad
it's quite atmospheric and the music is very creepy.
brilliant acting by wynona ryder and billie bobby brown. and astounding 80s costumes.
my teens loved it.

ponygirlcurtis · 24/01/2021 20:20

I don't do horror stuff at all and was a bit worried I would find it too scary, especially as first episode gets the spook going quite quickly, but it's been more spooky than right out scary. There have been a couple of bits I have had to stop watching and come back another day as the tension was ramping up - but when I went back to it I thought 'oh that was fine, I should have kept watching'. I am really enjoying it!

wellthatsunusual · 24/01/2021 20:21

I didn't find it even a little bit scary. My 14 year old has watched it and didn't find it scary either.

It's good but not scary.

SavoyCabbage · 24/01/2021 20:31

I think the first part of the first episode is the worst bit. You could google the outline of what's going to happen so you aren't caught unawares.

I've watched all of them and I thought it was fine but I couldn't even watch that Hill House on Gogglebox!

WunWun · 24/01/2021 20:31

How old is she?

ThePricklySheep · 24/01/2021 20:46

She’s 12. Says all her friends have watched it but she doesn’t like horror.

OP posts:
WunWun · 24/01/2021 20:50

I very much doubt she'd like it then. People getting killed by monsters.. including their teenage friend.. I can't imagine a 12 year old that doesn't like horror would like it.

Angel2702 · 24/01/2021 20:52

I don’t think it’s at all scary. My 12yr old loved it. It’s more science fiction meets Goodies than horror.

TooMinty · 24/01/2021 20:53

@tonyunclejohnny

Not remotely scary it's good though.

Well now I feel like a total wuss because I found it scary... But also brilliant! And I would have been less scared age 12, am more feart now!

PollyPocket245 · 24/01/2021 20:58

The haunting on hill house is horrific! I don’t blame you for that.

The thing with stranger things is you don’t actually see the monster until late on in the series (if I remember rightly). So it’s as scary as the scariest thing your DD can imagine... if that makes sense. Personally I found it scary until I saw the monster, then I wasn’t scared

evouk · 24/01/2021 21:02

There's a few gory bits when ppl get attacked and eaten

It's SO good though. I think we watched series one three times lol

My favourite bits are when El uses her powers on the two bullies

Whatsnewpussyhat · 24/01/2021 21:03

It’s more science fiction meets Goodies than horror

Hoping that's a auto correct for Goonies. (Imagining middle aged men doing daft things on chopper bikes) Grin

0htooooodles · 24/01/2021 21:04

My nine year old has seen two seasons with us, and had no issues!

onthinice · 24/01/2021 21:07

I found it scary in the first series, when we don't know what we're dealing with! But after that more exciting than scary. My DD 12 did not find it scary. I think that's probably down to the difference in the TV children are brought up with these days compared to the 80s.

Terracottasaur · 24/01/2021 21:08

I’m a total wuss but I loved it.

I think it depends what you find scary. ST has a spooky looking monster and a few jump scares and tense moments. If you hate that sort of thing you might not like it.

What it doesn’t have is any kind of psychological / torture element. It’s unlikely to prey on your mind in a distressing way (like something like Saw would).

I’m really not into scary stuff - I absolutely couldn’t cope with hill house - but ST really was fine and I loved it.

ginghamstarfish · 25/01/2021 10:01

I never watch horror but thought this more sci-fi, not really scary.

bonfireheart · 25/01/2021 23:25

DD12 and I watched it together and loved it, a few things to make you jump but nothing that will keep either of you awake!

fruitpastille · 25/01/2021 23:32

I found it a bit scary/tense at times but completely fine. I'm not letting teen DS watch it but he has a history of non sleeping due to fears. Mind you if he was really keen I would probably let him try an episode or two.

LyndaSnellMBE · 26/01/2021 05:34

I’d say it was creepy rather than scary
