Ian's had his day, he just goes through the same cycle over and over, his life is the Eastend version of Limbo - caught in a neverending storyline: meet woman, somehow impress woman, act like a dick, lose woman, spiral, tragedy strikes, spiral further, feel remorse, meet woman ad infinitum...

I do agree that Ian is a bit washed up , but it still wouldn't be the same if he died! I'd get over it , but I would miss him and his knitted hat.
