Anyone going to watch this?
I've never heard of this person before.

@BLTLover

Jenna Coleman is a stunning woman isnt she?
She is! Why can't I look like that? :) All these wild parties in the 70s.. All I remember as a child in the UK was misery and being poor and the 3 day week. Only the rich could afford back packing to sunnier climes back then.

I considered watching this but avoided it as I was worried it would dwell too much on beautiful young women's suffering and dead bodies. Can anyone reassure me that it doesn't do this?

PJsEveryday · 02/01/2021 14:20

valency so far its not been gratuitous at all, but I've only seem the 1st episode.

JazzyGeoff · 02/01/2021 14:30

@PJsEveryday

I loved it! Once I worked out the 2 months earlier/later thing it made sense. Loved the 70s vibe and loved the lack of nudity. A few years ago there would have been lots of pointless and gratuitous sex scenes but this was like dramas of old (but much better produced). I know that makes me sound like an old prude but for me, it made a refreshing change.
It wasn't completely titless though, the ubiquitous strip club scene was there Grin

Wouldn't be a crime drama without it, would it Hmm

stumbledin · 02/01/2021 15:23

I wanted to watch as I had totally forgotten these true events.

The main characters hair is just stupid. (And now someone is going to tell me it is his own hair and I will feel stupid!)

But totally spoint by the jumping backward and forward. Would have been much more suspenseful to have just told it chronologically, even by using small scenes of family members back in Holland or wherever getting worried.

But amazed that in this day and age anyone would have though really tiny subtitles is some luminous green was acceptable to give english translation.

Not sure I will bother to tune in for the rest.

Might just go to wikipedia.

stumbledin · 02/01/2021 15:24

But have to admit as a sort of virtual tourist trip the scenery is just stunning.

Letsnotargue · 02/01/2021 15:25

I really liked it... I watched 4 episodes last night and went to bed far too late.

I usually hate time hopping and get really confused but I realised that the actual time periods don’t really matter, and you can tell when in the timeline you are by what’s going on.

I love the Dutch embassy guy.

sashagabadon · 02/01/2021 15:30

Enjoyed it. A lot of 3 months ago, 4 months later, 2 months previously but as the characters are limited in number I was able to keep track.
I love Jenna’s sun glasses

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/01/2021 15:31

@Cocolapew

Its based on a true story of a man, and woman, in the 70's in Bangkok. He was a con man and more.. (don't want to give away any spoilers) I think you would like it Blondes Smile
I shall try

Thanks @Cocolapew

It does a bit. I hate that too. I had a feeling of dread for poor old Teresa in episode 1 when she got in the car. You could fast forward though?
Mangermaid · 02/01/2021 15:47

I watched three episodes last night and while I loved the acting and the 70s vibe I always feel a little unsettled when the story's about real people being murdered. It wasn't gratuitously violent at all but all very sad and sordid.

PJsEveryday · 02/01/2021 15:48

jazzygeoff that's true! I'd forgotten about that bit. But given the gratuity of these type of scenes is something the The Sopranos, this was fairly tame.

Laska2Meryls · 02/01/2021 15:56

Theres an Observer piece about the background and Charles Sobhraj here
Its not really giving away any spoilers ..

I really loved the first episode and thought that the setting and lookof the actors were very true to life (I was a 70s teen!) .. Am going to watch the next one this evening..

june2007 · 02/01/2021 15:57

Sore one episode it is a bit upsetting but then you know that from the outset. The time hopping is difficult. Want to watch the rest.

HmmSureJan · 02/01/2021 19:33

I thought it was great. So menacing and creepy. So easy for him to get away with it back in those times.

HmmSureJan · 02/01/2021 20:00

Looks like the hair is pretty accurate.

midsomermurderess · 02/01/2021 20:42

I enjoyed the first episode. I think it's quite sobering. When you're young and travelling you take all kinds of risks, fall in with all kinds of people you barely know and never imagine it won't be anything other than fun and excitement. In hindsight, how very different it could all have been, to a great extent, by bad luck.

Mumdiva99 · 02/01/2021 20:46

Omg....I just finished it - after staying up until 2 last night binge watching. I loved it. I don't often watch long crime series but I was completely sucked in. Great script and acting.

BaconAndAvocado · 02/01/2021 21:12

Really enjoying it.

So disturbing in places. The most disturbing thing so far for me is how the Jenna Coleman character is letting Charles get away with everything.

It’s also making me think twice about letting my kids go travelling 😂

unique1986 · 03/01/2021 00:21

On episode 4. Glad I stuck with it.
Ps how nice was Dominique 😉😮

HmmSureJan · 03/01/2021 00:33

I've just finished episode three, right on the edge of my seat! Poor, lovely Dominique.

drigon · 03/01/2021 00:39

Yes, lovely Dominique! It is pretty tense
I am on episode 4 and really enjoying it. Jenna Coleman's clothes are lovely too.

drigon · 03/01/2021 00:42

Yes the Dutchman is great. Also like Tim McInnery as the Belgian attaché/ ambassador.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 03/01/2021 00:55

Watched two episodes so far, I quite like that it's slow paced, it fits with the lazy, glamorous summer setting but gets quite frantic when the Dutch diplomat is on screen. He's great, I hadn't heard the real story so won't Google yet but so far its interesting and of course so sad.

Cocolapew · 03/01/2021 10:02

Dominique was lovely, that episode was great, real edge of the seat stuff.
