Just a head's up that Season 1 is on BBC 4 on iPlayer.

I've only watched from about Season 6 onwards so I'm excited to see how it all started.

BCBG = Bon chic bon genre @ageingdisgracefully.

JingleJohnsJulie · 20/12/2020 09:25

Oh I might watch S1 again but introduce it to DS. We are currently working our way through House.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/12/2020 09:27

Explanation of the term

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/12/2020 09:30

Although my thoughts on it don't tally with the official line, as it's clearly now quite a 'dated' term (showing my age), as with 'Sloaney'.

ageingdisgracefully · 20/12/2020 09:46

Merci, @NewModelArmyMayhem18

On the subject of French terms, is "Jolie-Laide" still in use? . It used to be quite widely used, back in the day.

stumbledin · 02/01/2021 15:35

Well I never thought I would make it once I found out that instead of 8 programmes per series it increased to 12.

But thanks to Tier 4 and shockingly awful xmas tv I have watched from series 1 right through to series 7.

And the whole style towards the later series is so differint to the first 3. And the lovely photography.

And the plotting does get more and complex. Series 7 about the money laundering really baffled me first time round, and I think I just about grasped it this time.

re watching made me aware of just how much I miss when watching tv. My mind wanders off because of scenery or something irrelevant. I am embarrassed for myself.

But have also now seen what is the attraction of binge watching. far easier to keep up with plots etc..

Is it just me, but much as I like and am irritated by Laure, her work persona is almost like a rebellious teenager. Not just the way she responds but the way she moves.

Roban is more flawed than I had first seen him as.

But I still have high hopes for Josephine finding true happiness in a lesbian relationship. She gave a wonderful speech about men in one of the episodes.

Why do we know so little about Laure's background. We get snippets of other characters formative years.

I now know that Tin Tin is Luc - and he did far more for his ex partners than I remember. As Tom said to the "new boy" - he always thought they were a trio and then he found out they were a pair.

rosegoldwatcher · 02/01/2021 18:16

It was a lot of hard work(!) but I have just finished re-watching all 7 series in preparation for the new one starting this evening!

Season 7, especially, was excellent. I got far more from it by bingeing it rather than the weekly double dose of the first time of watching.
The ending was sad but absolutely perfect and I am slightly worried that series 8 can't possibly live up to my expectations.

ageingdisgracefully · 02/01/2021 22:08

Does S8 have a different writer?

stumbledin · 02/01/2021 23:37

I forgot to say I started a new thread to focus on Series 8 and suggested this one for those going through the previous series.

For anyone interested www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/4123429-Spiral-Series-8-BBC-4-from-2-January-2020-Week-by-week-no-spoilers-please

stumbledin · 03/01/2021 19:07

I checked about writer but couldn't quite make out. On wikipedia they imply it is a group of writers taking turns.

But does anyone remember the series when Marianne falls out with Roban and asks to be deployed elsewhere. I am sure at the end of that series she is there again in his office and he looks releaved. But at the start of the next series it was Didier (spelling).

ageingdisgracefully · 03/01/2021 19:20

I haven't watched in order so my memory is muddled. I also remember Marianne falling out with Roban (over her son, was it?) and making it up at a later point. She then went back to work for Roban but I can't remember why she left again.

It was Didier helping Roban to pack at the end of S7. No sign of Marianne.

Another thing about Roban - in s6 he was ill and then seemed to make a remarkable recovery in timr for S7 Did I miss something? .

I'm re-watching from the beginning, on series 3 now. I'm getting very distracted by Roban's blow dries and increasingly purple hair Grin

@rosegoldwatcher - total spoiler for anyone who is new to it/catching up

Sorry @wowfudge - I was responding, with the best of intentions, to stumbledin and aging.

I have reported both of my posts! (First time for everything!)

stumbledin · 03/01/2021 20:39

ageingdisgracefully

  • there was just a casual mention in the following series that he had had an operation and was now fully fit. I think there was some attempt to make out he wasn't competent.

its funny I have only just re-watched but like the first time round I just cant remember what Roban did but she felt he had breached the ethics of his post / abused his position somehow.

It wasn't her son, but the son of a woman that came to Roban asking him to reopen the case of her son's death.

AlPacino · 07/01/2021 17:09

No spoilers but I binge watched all of season 8 on iplayer- you’re in for a treat!!!!

wowfudge · 07/01/2021 17:29

We watched the first episode on Tuesday. I haven't checked but assume BBC4 is showing two episodes back to back on Saturdays as usual? In which case we'll watch episode 2 on catch up then watch when it's broadcast.

It is really well written and acted. It's a bit like Line of Duty in that the production of that has been upgraded through the series too.

One thing I wasn't sure of though - is the new court complex in the same place as the prison or am I being dim?

stumbledin · 07/01/2021 19:36

There is a separate thread on Series 8 - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/4123429-Spiral-Series-8-BBC-4-from-2-January-2020-Week-by-week-no-spoilers-please - but I wont be joining is as I've gone over to the dark side and binged watch, which I now regret.

stumbledin · 07/01/2021 19:43

This is not a spoiler for series 8, but is for series 7.

At the end of series 7 in the nightclub I thought the bit where Josephine was bundled off with the driver made no sense. His boss had handed himself in so why would he get his henchman to take her away. It would undermine his position in custody.

Thought it was a bit contrived, more to make a point about Ali's policing?

IdblowJonSnow · 12/01/2021 00:35

I just finished watching series 8. Just wow.
What an incredible final series.
I won't say anymore as would hate to spoil it for anyone! I already want to watch it again.
I would second watching it from series 3 too.
I didn't like Roban so didn't miss him.
There is a surprise 'goody' in this series!

KittyMcKitty · 13/01/2021 20:42

I’ve watched the first two episodes of S8 (after some very dedicated watching to get through the other 7 seasons Grin).

Robyn really annoyed me by the end of S7 so not sad to see him go. Hoping Josephine finds happiness with Lola.

Have a horrible feeling someone’s going to die - I feel probably Ali, Gilou or Tin Tin.

Rationing to one episode a night as will be sad when it’s finished (that and I know it’s bound to end on a depressing note).

Rollergirl11 · 14/01/2021 16:29

DH and I have just started watching Spiral this week and so far have finished Seasons 1 and 2. The French legal system is riveting. But we can’t believe how utterly inept the police are. Do they get better as the seasons go on?

WasItAllADream · 14/01/2021 16:51

So excited to hear Season 8 is out!

Agree that the seasons have improved as time has gone on.To be honest I found some of the crimes horribly gratuitous in the first 2 or 3 seasons, especially when they were weekly new ones. I might rewatch just season 7 to refresh my memory.
