So for those of us in our late thirties and (ahem) early forties who are re-watching buffy.

Is it spike or angel?

I love spike but I'm not sure buffy ever did. I need to be less invested into this but I'm watching it on my new exercise trampoline. And it's my happy place.

Spike. He was more real.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/12/2020 20:15

Why does it have to be either or? Why not both?!

I watched once more with feeling because I was in a v bad mood the other day. Cheered me up no end.

CaveMum · 04/12/2020 16:40

Spike all the way! Angel was far too self pitying. “Tall, dark and forehead” as Spike put it Grin

Giles...

CaveMum · 04/12/2020 16:51

😂😂😂 @FindHungrySamurai

Quartz2208 · 04/12/2020 16:54

Some of it is answered (kind of) in the comics

but for me Spike

Ohalrightthen · 04/12/2020 16:55

Absolutely Spike. Angel is such a whingebag.

Glamflimfloogety · 04/12/2020 17:06

Has to be Angel for me. He might be whingey but he never tried to rape Buffy. I'll never forgive Spike for that, and can't believe she did. It's the only part of the whole series that doesn't sit well for me even now.

ItCouldBeBunnies · 04/12/2020 17:09

Spike. Apart from the rapey episode that I block out. I used to be team Angel and I can't believe how little I appreciated Spike before now. Also S4 Riley not as bad as I remember....Then S5 brought it all rushing back. Get in the bin.

ditavonteesed · 04/12/2020 17:35

So much spike.

Quartz2208 · 04/12/2020 20:12

IIRC I read they did regret the rape episode a bit but felt that Spike needed to reach the bottom in order to make the decision to get his soul

Have just finished Buffy with DD and she loves Spike to - though we did really enjoy Angel and Spike in Angel Season 4 wish they hadnt cancelled it

Cocoayoghurt · 04/12/2020 20:19

spike!!!

I agree regarding that episode. I do always skip that episode when I re-watch though.
Tempusfudgeit · 04/12/2020 20:26

'They got ... the mustard ... out!' Brilliant Grin

Quartz2208 · 04/12/2020 20:28

Yes it was an uncomfortable episode with DD and need some talking afterwards Cocoayoghurt

Tempusfudgeit · 04/12/2020 20:29

Oh, and Angelus every time. Swoon.

CaveMum · 04/12/2020 22:40

James Marsters on THAT episode:

“It was the hardest day of my professional life. I was curled up in a fetal position in between takes. I can’t watch scenes like that. I choose not to. I won’t go to a movie that has something like that. It’s a specific hot button for me. It just really makes me crazy. It was really hard. It was just unbelievably hard. But again I’m glad we did it. Spike was evil, and I think a lot of people forgot about that. Joss was constantly trying to remind the audience, “Look, guys, I know he’s charming, but he’s evil.” He’s a bad boyfriend. It would be bad to date a guy like this. And I think he wanted to reinforce that in the most dramatic way imaginable. And also give Spike a really good reason to try to reform and try to become better and try to get a soul. Joss doesn’t do anything with half measures. He goes all the way with things. And I’m glad he does.”

AliceMck · 04/12/2020 22:42

Spike 100% I loved Angel but spike had personality and the whole bad boy thing going. I so need to rewatch them now.

AuntyPasta · 04/12/2020 22:45

Spike.

NeutralJanet · 04/12/2020 22:46

Definitely Spike. I don't really rate Angel as a character, never bothered watching Angel the first time round for that reason. I'm giving it a go now since E4 are showing it but it's the characters who aren't Angel like Spike, Cordelia and Faith who are making it worthwhile.

MissFitton · 04/12/2020 22:52

Spike. And thanks for the reminder OP. I've had a crap week so just put 'Once More With Feeling' on. That should to the trick. 😁

feministbias · 04/12/2020 22:53

Riley (dons hard hat and hangs head)

He really broke my heart when he broke Buffy's

CaveMum · 04/12/2020 22:54

I vividly remember the first time I saw Buffy (BBC2, Thursday night!) - it was the Season 1 episode “The Pack” (Xander and some school bullies get possessed by the spirit of a pack of Hyenas - RIP Principal Flutie). I just remember that scene where the pack walk up towards the camera accompanied by a really grungy guitar riff and thinking “Wow!”. I’m the same age as Buffy (born 1981) so it was the perfect accompaniment to my teenage years and I felt every bit of angst along the way!

Quartz2208 · 04/12/2020 22:55

Once more with feeling is amazing (although DD finding it on Spotify sometimes has pushed it to the limit)

James Marsters definitely made Spike - Spike redemption was all on him Angel had it forced upon him:
