I hate Breaking Bad

I hate Breaking Bad! I've suffered through three (three!) series and I can't take it any more. The misery and cruelty is relentless. Yes, Walt's now a villian , and as I understand he'll get even worse, but I just don't want to watch it.

I know the issue is clearly with me as so many people say it's the greatest series of all time. But please tell me I'm not alone?!

Watched 2 series. DF wants to watch series 3 but my heart just isn't in it.

I can't figure out why I don't like it, it's just not my cup of tea

I thought the Skyler hate was just from men!

I don't get it. She just wanted a conventional, stable life for her kids. What's to hate?

Mangofandangoo · 26/08/2020 19:46

Loved breaking bad, Hated better call Saul.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 26/08/2020 19:52

Yep, two episodes was as far as I got. My granddad was dying at the time and I had enough misery in my life without adding more. I already disliked all the characters after that. Walt could have just taken the job offered to him by his old college friend, had treatment on the insurance and got a bit of self respect back from his career getting a boost.

LouisBalfour · 26/08/2020 19:58

I think Skyler is hated for many reasons but for me, she embodies the woman that stays put when she should have left long ago. And in the process of putting up with so much - she becomes a horrible shrew who goes against her principles.

MinaMurray · 26/08/2020 20:05

I don’t like it either.

I struggled through series 1 because so many people raved about it, and kept telling me to stick with it and I’d get into it and think it was wonderful too, but I just couldn’t face watching any of series 2.
One series of a TV show I’m not enjoying is more than enough.

Wallabyone · 26/08/2020 20:13

It was recommended to us by several people who loved it. We decided lockdown would be a good time to give it a go, and my goodness, I felt like I deserved a reward by the time we got to the end! I didn't enjoy it at all, I endured it!

BarefootHippieChick · 26/08/2020 20:50

The funniest bit about Skyler was when she went to tell Jesse off for selling her husband weed, like she was his mum or something 😁

Readytogogogo · 26/08/2020 21:05

Might give Better call Saul a try at some point in the future.

I'm really surprised by how many people feel the same about Breaking Bad though.

@Wallabyone Wow quite a commitment to have watched the whole series during lockdown!

I am another lockdown viewer. I binged GOT and loved that so much so when that finished i felt empty and wanted to fill the hole. I'd heard such good things about BB.

Tbh it was nothing more than okay for me. I was mainly bored but some episodes were good. I did like the concept and the acting but prob not a good idea to go for something like that after GOT.

I did love Gus though and had a weird crush on him Blush

IntermittentParps · 27/08/2020 12:39

Chic, I think Walt is based not on any one individual story or myth but the very universal impulses of pride and greed.

There is one episode called 'Ozymandias'...

IcedPurple · 27/08/2020 14:22

I liked Skyler and never understand the hatred for her.

Same. She's not perfect but in a series where people - OK men - were routinely killing each other and flogging a dangerous illegal drug, her being a bit annoying didn't seem so bad in the scheme of things.

Some of the online commentary about her was highly misgynistic too.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 27/08/2020 14:39

Yes, the online comments about Skylar were shameful. I hate the way the mods of those chat rooms just let casual sexism and misogyny go without any sort of challenge.

I thought she was fine up until the middle of the last series where she began to go bad. But you could argue that she was trapped in that situation and couldn't see a way out.

SerenDippitty · 27/08/2020 15:31

We watched up until the beginning of the last series and enjoyed it but we sort of lost interest and never finished it.

NoToMisogyny · 27/08/2020 21:24

The only thing I hate about BB is that it’s ruined telly for me ever since. I haven’t found anything that comes within a million miles of it 😢.

But I found Mindhunter ridiculously dull, couldn’t get into Mad Men at all, and only lasted 1 episode of The Sopranos.

So I guess the moral of the story is - horses for courses!!

Cruddles · 27/08/2020 22:01

I also did 3 series just because of everyone going on about it and I thought I would start enjoying it at some point. But no, hated it. Hated every character except Hank and Saul. I found Brian Cranston uncomfortable to look at. Pinkman was a useless sack of whiny shit and i was frustrated at how Walter kept saving him.

EachandEveryone · 28/08/2020 07:00

It did get repetitive but I did enjoy it. Not a patch on The Sopranos though,

Whitneylilyrose · 28/08/2020 22:54

My neighbour was a breaking bad weirdo who reported me for reporting him that he was selling crystal meth.

Sad thing is police believed I was reporting him for this lol

The guy was a weirdo, when they interviewed me I said wtf this isn't breaking bad and America who even takes crystal meth in the UK

Truth story

ScrambledSmegs · 28/08/2020 23:08

Yeah I couldn't get into it either. Loved the Wire, really enjoyed Mr Robot, just couldn't deal with how little I cared about any of the main characters in BB.

Interestingly everyone I know who loved it told me they loved the Sopranos too. Yeah, I watched series 1 of that too, I quite liked it but not enough to keep going. So what, there's loads of stuff I do like.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 29/08/2020 16:57

We quite enjoyed it, although Better call Saul is better.
Agree with BB not being a patch on The Sopranos, also liked The Wire but for the ultimate in bad guys I think The Shield is excellent.

Figgygal · 29/08/2020 17:03

We’ve just recently finished it
It took just shy of 4 years!!!

But still glad we finished it

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 29/08/2020 17:07

Not a binge watcher then Figgy Grin

Scorpiowoman80 · 30/08/2020 05:12

I got into about 3 seasons and It just absolutely dragged! Definitely not the best nor the worst I’ve seen!

Cluckycluck · 30/08/2020 07:35

On paper it's a series I should love but I just don't get the love for it.

I love antihero shows (The Shield, The Wire, SOA, Oz etc) but the difference is all the other shows have likeable characters. Breaking Bad has a complete lack of likeable characters. For me the characters don't feel real (I get that they're not obviously) and I just didn't care about any of them. By the end of SOA I was so attached to the characters that I was a broken women when it ended, my poor DH had to listen to me wail through most of the last season.

The acting doesn't particularly resonate either. Bryan Cranston is fantastic but I didn't find anyone else particularly great and there isn't anyone else that manages to completely embody the characters so well that I couldn't imagine them being better played by another actor. Shane on The Shield had such an affect on me that I actually struggle to watch Walton Goggins in anything else, his acting was so fantastic that to me Walton is Shane. I didn't feel that way about anyone on BB.
