The Fall: Gillian Anderson.......is this normal?

So, watching this after a recommendation here

(though I say watching I am actually fast forwarding loads as there is a lot of sexual violence towards women so I skip all that)....

but this is the first time I have ever watched Gillian Anderson in anything....is this how she talks the whole time?.....in a whisper.....so slowly....

I am trying to imagine her as a coper on the beat...(as her character must have been once).... and thinking she wouldn't last 5 minutes out on the street.....now on Series 3 and it seems to be getting worse......

is this what she is always like or is it just The Fall?

I think I read a book once that said soft speaking, just above a whisper was the most appealing to men 🙄 she's supposed to be ridiculously attractive to men in this series so I think that's why they have her talk like that.

I don’t think it’s true that. I’m very quietly spoken, and all I get is speak up you speak so quietly,, I’d say it annoys men more than attracts them, I’m just not physically capable of speaking loudly. It’s a real actual effort for me to speak loudly. .I’m not shy, I’m quite gobby, but I speak quietly.🤷‍♀️

I just binged watched this series while doing two weeks quarantine. Haven't been wearing make up and have "Monica" hair due to the heat and humidity, I'm a complete mess but I'm fantasising about coming out of quarantine and becoming Gillian Anderson. She looks amazing in this series.

But I keep wondering how can she keep her hair looking that amazing while supposedly sleeping on a camp bed in her office! Why does she wear skyscraper heels while hunting for a serial killer. Where do her flatter shoes suddenly appear from when she's searching the forest? Do senior police officers really get chauffeured around and can they really order junior officers to go and collect their belongings from hotels? She gets treated like royalty by her colleagues.

Those silk shirts and the silk dressing gown are beautiful. I would love to have something similar but I need to lose my lockdown stone , get hair extensions and pretend I'm not a 50 year old SAHM.

The ending was strange I think - I'd liked to have seen proper justice served.

I believe she is playing Thatcher in the next series of the Crown. I couldn't imagine someone as attractive as her doing that but I think she will be able to do the voice brilliantly.

I want to thank you all for talking about this show. It’s miserable here and I was looking for a binge worthy show!

Well if it's more misery you're after , this is for you. I found it dark and disturbing and I questioned the value of what this " entertainment" was doin gto me.

Spoiler alert...
Just finished the series last night. When Spector attacks Stella after she tells him she was only concerned about losing him because that would be an easy out for him... it's like an explosion of hatred for the mother who didn't think him worthy enough to stick around for. But generally he despises any world view where he isn't the centre of attention.

In terms of more important style notes, I loved Stella's blouses (even thought of freeze framing and zooming in on the label!) but I really didn't like her handbag with the zip that goes all the way round from the base...

Series 3 was a little too depressing. And the Katie character was a PITA.

I’m still on season 2. I do love seeing the strong female characters. It does frighten me a bit how easily Spector gained entrance to the houses and hotel room..

Loving Gillian Anderson’s wardrobe. So wish I was a silk and pencil skirt kind of woman.

She wasn't whispery on the X Files at all.

Her clothing on Sex Education is even better. I hunted high and low for the green flow long dress she wore on there to no avail.

Agree with the Sex Ed clothes! Very different but lovely. Great autumn tones too if I remember.

I've just discovered this and have been binge watching over the last week - halfway through series 3 now. Spector had a son but he seems to have disappeared, anyone else notice that?

I'm on season 1 episode 5 and thought to myself last night, I'm going into work tomorrow and I'm going to be calm and confident and thoughtful and very Gillian Anderson and not rush around like a mad thing trying to get timetables sorted, classroom computers taken out to increase space, interview new students etc etc etc. It didn't work. Will try again tomorrow.

I just loved the finely-drawn character of the ER doctor in series 3. So strange though- for a perfectly drawn vignette, his character wasn’t relevant to the story really. It could have been done by anyone. What a waste of a marvellous tv character.

I’m going to rewatch this again to see what I’ve missed. (Shall fast forward through the violence..)

She was a punk in her youth and looked fabulous with it.

I think this show started off well but I found the last season to be a bit lacklustre and unimpressive. Eg that teenager storyline wasn’t even remotely interesting, just cringeworthy.

I reckon they should have ended the Spector investigation earlier and just started on a new case. It was dragged on imo

Why did she change into the red cardi to interview him? Was there any significance to that?

There is no way the nurse would,have had that much time with him alone. Even before he was awake he would have been handcuffed to the bed. He would have been allocated a male nurse if possible, it one who looked like all his victims. My friend nursed Ian Huntley and the nurses did not have intimate chats with him or even wear their name badges, especially my friend whose name is Jessica.

Her character is shouty & firm in the Johnny English movies. I do find GA quite versatile.... that said, detective in high heels sounds like a huge turn off. I won't relate.

I think the flowers in her house at the end were meant to be from him - his first question to her whilst he was trying to keep her awake were 'do you like flowers'. maybe it was to set up a storyline if there was another series.

Regarding the blouses: if you sew, or know anyone who does, the Sew Over It Anderson blouse is based on Stella’s silk blouses.
