Hi guys,

I’ve got a job interview as a soap writer at the bbc next week.

Just wondering if you could give me any ideas about what you’d love to see happen in Easties! Any character ideas? Any actors you think are underused?

Thanks!

It needs majorly lightning up. Its gone so dull, dreary and depressing and for the love of god bring back Grant 😂 I have been watching Classic EE and its a million times better than the current

majesticallyawkward · 24/07/2020 15:16

Kill off Whitney and bring the rest into the real world?

EmKR100 · 24/07/2020 15:16

Bringing back Grant is an excellent call.

The last few months have definitely been quite dreary and miserable.

Alderaan · 24/07/2020 15:20

Cut out the gangster crap!

peakygal · 24/07/2020 17:22

I just think it needs a little cheering up

claracluck78 · 24/07/2020 18:11

Make it cheerier, cut out the pseudo gangster rubbish and at least attempt to make it plausible that such a group of non-professionals could afford to live where they do with being able to eat out/go to the pub every day!

claracluck78 · 24/07/2020 18:13

Bring in a couple of new families who don't have criminal/abuse backgrounds and bring back the normal families. Pauline and Arthur style characters made some of the 80s best soap

nildesparandum · 24/07/2020 21:01

Bring back Keanu (I think that's how you spell it)
Get rid of Chantelle, or get another actress to play her part. She is very pretty but a useless actor.

MidnightCitrus · 26/07/2020 12:33

Get rid of the gangsters - they don't work

Bring back family issues, soap drama, stop the misery parade that is Whitneys life

Ishihtzuknot · 26/07/2020 13:49

You are a godsend, fingers crossed for the interview! Please end the stupid storyline about sharon and Phil, grant coming back for Sharon and living in the pub again would be fab. Whitney needs to settle down or be killed off I’ve had enough of her constant unrealistic bad luck. Kill off ruby and dotty they annoy me too. Ben isn’t a hardman it’s awkward to watch they either need a new actor or a new storyline for him. Stacey and Martin back together, Alfie back and explanations for fat boy and Vincent’s disappearances would be great too.
Some new decent looking men wouldn’t go amiss either thanks Grin

Ishihtzuknot · 26/07/2020 13:51

And Keanu back with louise, Sharon’s baby actually being phil’s all along

MidnightCitrus · 26/07/2020 16:56

@Ishihtzuknot

And Keanu back with louise, Sharon’s baby actually being phil’s all along
Everyone knows that's what will happen, re the baby- its soap law
SinisterBumFacedCat · 27/07/2020 00:03

Bring back Vincent for Kim, it was insinuated he was murdered by bent coppers but possibly gone into witness protection. DO NOT bring back Alfie under any circumstances. DO bring back Janine under any circumstances. Ben and Callum get engaged, more strong Mitchell women. Use Jay more.

lovelylovelove · 27/07/2020 13:21

Keep characters true to themselves.
E.g Denise and Ian was just a stupid couple. Never in a million years would she be interested in him.

Build on the families that already in there instead of introducing new characters all the time.
I like Karen and her family because she is quite real. She also has a heart and humour.
Her and Billy are a good couple.

Get rid of Whitney (same old storylines). She is a bit like Maria in Coronation street.

Use more of the old characters and family.
I think that's why Corrie is a success. They use characters that have history and use this history for newer storylines.

Bring back Masood and his family.

lovelylovelove · 27/07/2020 13:24

Yes definitely bring back Vincent. He was perfect for Kim and he was a good gangster.

Also Fat boy was great as he brought humour to the soap.
Get rid of Mick's mate (can't remember his name) the one with Rainie.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 27/07/2020 15:20

I haven’t watched in about 18 months and summed up some of my thoughts on why in this thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/3971191-Should-I-revisit-EastEnders

Adding another voice to those saying ditch the gangsters. It feels like some of the scriptwriters are frustrated Guy Ritchie types, trying to recreate an East End that maybe existed 30 - 40 years ago, but is very different today. You’re more likely to come across a craft brewery or pop-up hipster coffee shop than a wannabe Kray brother these days.

The show needs more older, matriarchal figures. There’s Kathy, but she’s essentially isolated in her age group. She needs someone to play off; create the sort of dynamic we had in the days of Pat and Peggy.

A problem all soaps seems to have these days is splitting up couples simply because it seems to be ‘their turn’. Not every crisis in a marriage inevitably means divorce.

Maybe a bit of diversity within the diversity? What I mean is, diverse casting seems to mean adding more black and Asian characters, but ignoring non-British European origins. Years ago communities like Jewish and Greek/Turkish/Cypriot immigrants and their families - all prevalent in the real East End - were represented. You don’t see any of this now.

Please, please, PLEASE kill off the pop-eyed monster. If the budget will stretch to it, show his head being blown clean off his shoulders, just so we know a back from the dead storyline is impossible.

The80sweregreat · 27/07/2020 16:52

Please let Gray have an unhappy ending and end up in prison! Let Chantelle be happy with her children and be able to work in Dee's salon!

lovelylovelove · 27/07/2020 17:40

Don't kill of anymore young characters such as Lucy Beale, Denny, Steve owen's son. These are all characters that had history that could have been built upon and eventually had families of their own on the square.

I watched Eastenders since the beginning. Absolutely loved it. In the last year or so I have watched it a handful of times if it happens to be on.

kissmelittleass · 27/07/2020 17:52

I've watched eastenders since the very first episode in 1985!! Always loved it but the last few years I'm not fussed if I miss a episode and since lockdown I just stopped watching before it came off air and I do not miss it at all where as I will never miss an episode of coronation street or emmerdale!
I will rewatch I think when it's back on air but please as other posters said bring back Grant and Vincent and get rid of the dull same old boring characters like Ruby and Whitney.
Fed up of gangster story lines and just let Ben be normal for a change and forget playing the big guy!
Also if Kim is not returning it will be a catastrophe she is one of the funniest characters love her!!

timetest · 28/07/2020 22:14

Bring back Vincent. Prosecute Grey and liberate Chantelle. Get Sharon and Phil back together. Rehabilitate Ben. Find a normal bloke for Whitney and let her go off into the sunset with him. Give Denise a good story line.

eatsleepread · 29/07/2020 09:25

Get the lazy buggers back to work!!
Corrie seem able to do it Confused
Good luck.

Mrsjayy · 29/07/2020 09:28

Give Whitney Dean a bloody break she has been through too much is she even 30 yet ?

NigellasGuest · 29/07/2020 09:46

Have a watch of a documentary called The Real Eastenders which was on a few nights ago. All about actual real people, and it was wonderful. I really wanted to know what happens to them all next! In fact I would recommend anyone watching it, it was quite lovely, moving, and very real.

The80sweregreat · 29/07/2020 11:17

Nigella, was that documentary about people on the isle of dogs? I saw that last week.
It was good. I felt so sorry for the young boy who just wanted his mum around.
His nan was great with him. So kind and loving. It seemed a lovely community.

NigellasGuest · 29/07/2020 15:01

Yes The80s that's the one!
It must be on the iPlayer if anyone's interested. I was surprised how the cockney accent has survived. You keep hearing about how it has vanished. Or am I imagining this?

Sorry for minor derail. For the EE soap, yes please to Witney finding a (relatively) happy ending. If that could happen then I would like her to stay. She could then gradually evolve into a kind of Misery Oracle for younger characters, guiding them through their hardships!
