I haven’t watched in about 18 months and summed up some of my thoughts on why in this thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/telly_addicts/3971191-Should-I-revisit-EastEnders
Adding another voice to those saying ditch the gangsters. It feels like some of the scriptwriters are frustrated Guy Ritchie types, trying to recreate an East End that maybe existed 30 - 40 years ago, but is very different today. You’re more likely to come across a craft brewery or pop-up hipster coffee shop than a wannabe Kray brother these days.
The show needs more older, matriarchal figures. There’s Kathy, but she’s essentially isolated in her age group. She needs someone to play off; create the sort of dynamic we had in the days of Pat and Peggy.
A problem all soaps seems to have these days is splitting up couples simply because it seems to be ‘their turn’. Not every crisis in a marriage inevitably means divorce.
Maybe a bit of diversity within the diversity? What I mean is, diverse casting seems to mean adding more black and Asian characters, but ignoring non-British European origins. Years ago communities like Jewish and Greek/Turkish/Cypriot immigrants and their families - all prevalent in the real East End - were represented. You don’t see any of this now.
Please, please, PLEASE kill off the pop-eyed monster. If the budget will stretch to it, show his head being blown clean off his shoulders, just so we know a back from the dead storyline is impossible.
