Just seen that this starts on 26 July on the Beeb.

I love, love, love the book. I read it during lockdown and wanted to start reading it again as soon as I finished it. Am hovering between excitement and apprehension in case the TV series is a let down.

Anyone else looking forward to this?

Think I might be the only one on this thread who didn't love the book. I thought it was far too drawn out with sine characters. I'd have enjoyed it more if Lata had been the central character and the main focus and had far, far less detail on Maan, Rasheed and other many other (obsessive) male characters not particularly centred around Lata.

As for the TV series I enjoyed it, especially the latter episodes (and despite what I just said, it was a shame Pran wasn't in it more) and I'd have preferred a bit more emphasis on how the recent partition had effect the country.

Not sure if it is passage of time but Haresh seemed a lot more pleasant in the tv series. I recall him as dull and not that respectful of Lata in the book. It was like their marriage came out of nowhere based on no developed relationship.

Mind you only one I really like was Kabir (Amit being not that interested on who Lata actually was) but it's a while since I read it so I might be confusing my memories of them!

As for Maan, didn't Firoz's father come up with the idea because of his relationship to Saeeda? Letting Maan off was more for her, wasnt it?

Wasn't it hugely expensive? Which is probably why there was only six episodes? Shame really I thought it really improved as it went on.

I think my recalling everyone's relationship to each other helped the enjoyment. My husband was a bit lost on that - and he's usually more on board with who's who in tv programmes.

@IsolaPribby

The one thing that did throw me a little was figuring out timings between events. I'm not sure how long Maan was in jail waiting for his court appearance. His older brother brother had his head shaved for his mother's funeral, and then in the next scene or so, where they are sitting around the table in the garden with Amit, he has a full set of hair. There was no other sense of time passing, so was this continuity?
I don't think Maan was imprisoned for as long as the hair suggested.

The whole story is supposed to be 18 months. (I think.)

just finished this.
enjoyed it, easy watching.
she went with the arranged marriage in the end, but hopefully it was the best decision.

Haven’t read the book, but found the series to be engaging and visually beautiful and I enjoyed it very much. And so many gorgeous people!

Maan and Kabir certainly could make a peri menopausal woman a bit hot under the collar!

absolutely Kabir Grin

I remember asking on this thread if this was going to be shown in India.

Well now it is and has resulted in complaints to the police. Luckily for the BBC they are after Netflix for broadcasint it, not the actual programme makers..
