Following on from this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/streamed_tv/3933604-13-reasons-why-season-4 but this is for anyone who wants to discuss any spoilers

Thanks Sojo.

So....what’s with Winston? Mr Intense, or what?

Sojo88 · 15/06/2020 19:38

No probs Smile

He was a bit! Though I feel kind of bad for him - he loved Monty and Monty died, he loved Alex but Alex broke up with him...was sure that it was gonna come out this season about Alex being Bryce's killer - morally I'm not sure if it's right they blamed it on Monty or not!

Lots of incredible blurred lines.
I mean, Monty was clearly struggling with who he was and took it out (to the extreme) on other people.
I like that the dance addressed that Winston was in love with the idea of Monty. But Winston WAS using everyone, whether he wanted to admit it or not. He manipulated friendships so that he could get to the truth.

Some good actions don’t make a bad person good, just like some bad actions don’t make a good person bad. Iyswim.

Love the wee nod that Sherif Diego totally knew about the Standalls.

On the whole though, Clay for me became completely unlikeable. But I suppose the show needed to demonstrate the arc of telling lies and keeping a massive secret and what that does to someone’s mental health.

Sojo88 · 15/06/2020 21:43

The truth was sad about Monty - did sometimes feel for him and Bryce, despite what they had done. I guess Winston just loved him so much he needed to know the truth - at least in the end he didn't dob Alex in.

Yes I liked how Sheriff Diego (Diaz?) turned out to actually be quite nice - but again, morally, don't know if it's a good thing that he knew the truth about Bryce and kept it secret! I've always liked Alex's dad too, he seems really lovely.

Clay has been annoying in the past with his determination to get justice for Hannah, and his huge hatred for Bryce but I think generally he seems like a good guy, very loyal - what don't you like about him?

OP posts:
Onemorefuck · 15/06/2020 22:13

Ah yes. Diaz. Oops

Onemorefuck · 15/06/2020 22:15

Clay just seems to take everything to the extreme and I find him quite controlling in what narrative he wanted to tell. I guess part and parcel of keeping the massive secret.

Sojo88 · 15/06/2020 22:58

True - it made me sad how often he wasn't very nice to Justin this season. I always loved how the Jensens adopted him but I think Clay kept making Justin feel bad about that, even though deep down they did care about each other. Although I know his anxiety and paranoia was probably mainly responsible for the things he said.

It's a shame his relationship with Tyler wasn't so strong this season too, as they seemed really close in season 3 and I think it's amazing how they all helped Tyler.

Onemorefuck · 16/06/2020 17:17

I really enjoyed seeing Tyler’s growth through season 3.

Sojo88 · 17/06/2020 12:19

Yes I thought it was so lovely that all his friends helped him get his life back on track. He seemed quite indignant when they suspected he was involved in the lockdown but of course his friends were going to be a bit worried he'd gone back to guns, he had been acting suspiciously. One thing that did strike me though, is why did he hide in the girls' bathroom? Was it just closest?

OP posts:
Onemorefuck · 17/06/2020 12:53

Maybe the girls bathroom was the place he felt the safest?

Sojo88 · 17/06/2020 13:39

Well yes I wondered that but I would've thought he'd be avoiding the school toilets totally, wouldn't he have felt safer in a nearby classroom with other students?

That lockdown drill was the most cruelest and ridiculous thing - that must've traumatised most the kids and I don't really see how it'd help them in the unlikely case someone did come in the school with a gun! Hope US schools don't really do drills like that!

Have you finished watching the whole season? I just saw the last episode. I wasn't expecting such ending.
Sojo88 · 18/06/2020 00:55

Yep finished the season - found the last episode very sad in places but thought they wrapped everything up quite nicely! Did you like season 4?

OP posts:
catscatscatseverywhere · 18/06/2020 13:02

Yes, very much, I think it was better than i.e. season 2. I had this odd feeling that Zach is going to die, although it made me think straightaway that Justin had sarcoma on his neck and I was right why is that Confused

Sojo88 · 18/06/2020 17:51

Something was certainly up with Zach but that was never really addressed - I'm guessing he was drinking too much, because he felt guilty about beating Bryce up?

It's funny cos I had noticed a mark on Justin's neck and assumed it must've been from where Jess threw something at him when he joined her during the lockdown - but it didn't look like a cut or anything, I did think it looked like an HIV lesion but dismissed that idea right away - made a lot more sense when it turned out he did have HIV. Strange no one pointed it out to him though, or noticed it.

The penny dropped for me properly during the college interviews and Justin said that he was a recovering addict and had sex with men. And I thought “yup. They’re going to give him some kind of disease or he will OD or get killed over money”.

I’m a bit disappointed that 13RW didn’t use their massive platform to show that turning your life around is possible and HIV doesn’t always mean AIDS and death.

I mean, in a way, it was good that’s not the right word, but Alex tried to commit suicide and survived. So showing the flip side of what Hannah left them with and what could have happened.
I just feel cheated they didn’t do that with Justin.

Yes, it seems obvious now - and yet even though I saw the mark on his neck, it didn't occur to me the story would go in that direction. It is especially sad because of how Justin was at the start of the season - he'd just come out of rehab and was happy and healthy. Wasn't it indicated that Justin knew he was ill, though, and just decided not to do anything about it? Can't remember now, but got the impression he'd kind of given up.

It is shocking to think of how many people suffered/died/almost died because Hannah killed herself - that's why I think 13RW has done well at showing how suicide affects the people left behind, hopefully helping people who are struggling to realise it's not the answer.

I finished it last night.

So sad that Justin died. I guessed it would be him but didn’t guess what the cause would be.

The dance episode was a bit dull but the end shocked me.

I lien Jessica.

Anyone else find Anni so annoying. She’s so... I don’t even know. She talks like she’s everyone’s mum in a way, sounds like she’s older than she is? I can’t articulate it...

I’m glad Tyler wasn’t the shooter at the school but the drill was cruel.

There was a lot going on every episode so it kept me interested but at times it seemed like it was trying to cover everything - rape, suicide, sex work, sexual abuse, homosexuality, AIDS, racial prejudice... and probably more.

Sojo88 · 19/06/2020 15:30

Yes the end of that episode shocked me, but I should've guessed that it wouldn't end well - 13RW is a bit like a soap in that if something good is happening it probably won't last long!

Found Ani unbearable last season - very nosy and interfering. Figured she would probably still be in this season even though she didn't go down well with audiences! She was slightly more likeable this time and she featured a lot less which helped!

Diego was new - not sure how I feel about him. He was definitely a dick at the start but he's probably okay. Didn't like Jess using Charlie and Diego to make Justin jealous though, seemed nasty and unlike her. Also, I don't think she was fair being angry with Justin about needing his space after rehab.

Also why do they pronounce it “Arnie”? Like almost with an English accent. It’s not Annie is it? It’s Aaaani

I thought it was a good season overall

Do we know if it’s coming back?

Onemorefuck · 19/06/2020 17:18

I think it’s completely finished.

Sojo88 · 19/06/2020 17:38

I'm not sure they really know how to say it in their accent, as they've only heard Ani say it in her English one!

Yes that's definitely the last season for now - but who knows, they may well revisit it in a few years time to see how everyone's doing!

OP posts:
Onemorefuck · 19/06/2020 18:35

They’ve always got Gordon Lightfoot

Onemorefuck · 19/06/2020 18:35

Isn’t Ani short for another name?

Sojo88 · 19/06/2020 18:41

Oh yes that's right - Anchola, I think!
