I've just finished all of Derry Girls and what I think is the great thing about it is that the school kids are good but a bit annoying but the show is absolutely MADE by the minor characters, a bit like Gavin and Stacey

Sister Michael
The Priest
Erin and Orla's parents and Grandad
Michelle's Mum
Jenny Joyce
The chip shop woman
The teacher from the Protestant school

Classic

Any fans?
When is Series 3?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/06/2020 16:41

We were late to the party on Derry Girls and just loved it so much!! Can't wait for series 3 but I guess it's going to be a while Sad

Mrsjayy · 09/06/2020 20:29

It is filmed in a real school so I dunno if they film in the school holidays or not ?

I was also late to the party with Derry Girls but I think it is sensational writing.
Now I watch them on a loop when I need some distraction.

The asides between Gerry and the dad are brilliant. That one where Gerry was writing the chip shop order and he was accused of wanting to starve the family for ‘only’ ordering four bags of chips! Everyone e entering the room had their say on how many bags to order. Brilliant.

The head nun is fantastic, she has no fucks to give. 😂

Cannot wait for S3. Apparently they are busy writing it now.

TheCraicDealer · 10/06/2020 01:44

My pre-ML car parking space for work was behind the chippy they used for the chip shop episode- John Longs in Belfast. It actually always looks like that on the inside, don't think they had to do too much to take it back to the 90's!

I love the auntie, she's had some amazing lines. The whole thing is brilliantly done, even Michelle's chunky heeled school shoes obviously worn with at least two pairs of socks scrunched down.

Hollyhobbi · 10/06/2020 02:09

Sr. Michael is the bizz. Wish we'd had nuns like her in school. Although there was a sister Francesca who was about the same age as the nun who died. She supposedly taught French but only to first years as she had zero control over the class and noone learned a word of French. They had to cram three years of learning into two years so they could pass French in the junior cert.

I love how their normal teenage lives are their priority and whilst The Troubles stuff is moving for the audience and affects the adults, they sail on pasts because their own drama is far more important.

Yes! So true to life.

When Sarah walks down the aisle in the white dress, always cracks me up 😂

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 10/06/2020 18:06

And the bride is crying and she keeps saying its the hat. Grin

If you like Derry Girls you should also check out the writer’s other series London Irish, that was great as well. (The actor who plays the priest is one of the main characters.)
It’s a bit more adult but it’s great craic as well!

Nanalisa60 · 10/06/2020 18:08

I just love this show!! I laughed and I laughed!! Recommend to loads of my middle aged girl frends.

I’ll look out for London Irish.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 11/06/2020 01:37

I've watched Derry Girls several times now as I think it's just brilliant and hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing at Sarah walking down the aisle "took ages to get here so it did". Grin

The end of the last episode of season 2 had me in tears.

Icantreachthepretzels · 11/06/2020 01:48

I caught the end of the last episode of season 1 last night when I switched on for Buffy. Made me cry even out of context. But fully balanced by
Claire:'I'm trying to come out here'
Erin: 'Well go back in.'

and Sister Michael's comments at the talent show ' listening to you girls every year, I'm reminded how truly truly talented ... the professional artists who originally recorded these songs are.'

She's awesome - I love the episode at the wake where she gets stuck talking to Uncle Colm 'what's happening? Am I dead? is this my wake? Am I in hell?'

Starksforthewin · 11/06/2020 06:45

Just found London Irish on Amazon Prime for anyone who has that.

Six episodes in the first season. That will keep me happy for a while!

Eve · 11/06/2020 08:18

Have a look at Dating Amber on prime - sat in Ireland in the 90s.

happymummy12345 · 11/06/2020 16:19

I love it. I only found out about it last year and downloaded it and watched both series. I can't wait for series 3.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 11/06/2020 23:29

Love Derry Girls - such a fantastic show. Wasn't fussed on London Irish at all - would never put them together as being written by the same person.
