I've just finished all of Derry Girls and what I think is the great thing about it is that the school kids are good but a bit annoying but the show is absolutely MADE by the minor characters, a bit like Gavin and Stacey

Sister Michael
The Priest
Erin and Orla's parents and Grandad
Michelle's Mum
Jenny Joyce
The chip shop woman
The teacher from the Protestant school

Classic

Any fans?
When is Series 3?

Ah yeah, comparing London Irish and Derry Girls is a bit like comparing Crashing with Fleabag, but it has its moments. You can see the writer finding her voice. And it’s very funny.

To be fair, I could relate to it a lot, having once been an Irish girl who had moved to London and went out drinking too much, getting into silly scrapes! Now I am a sensible Irish woman who lives in Surrey with a husband and cats, haha!

Also 2 of the male actors are absolute rides. 😉

You're right @Pangur2 , maybe if I'd watched it when I first moved to England 20 years ago then I'd have found it funnier but with my now situation of being a 'boring married with kids & good job' hat on, I found it so cringeworthy and cliched! Also comparing it to Derry Girls (which I love as perfection itself) makes it much less good too!

Oh, I love Derry Girls. I honestly think it is one of the greatest TV programmes ever made. The writer’s ability to weave together hilarity and poignancy is unrivalled.

Resurrecting this thread for Season 3... anyone watch tonight?

Dontlickthetrolley · 12/04/2022 21:56

I watched series 1 on Sunday, series 2 yesterday and just on the first episode of 3. It's very funny, the music is epic. Having gone to an all girls school in the 90s certain things have made me proper lol. Absolutely loved the Take That/polar bear episode. Was surprised to see Claire and Sister Michael have only 7 years between them in real life!

and the original ‘hot priest’ who deserves a mention all on his own Halo

@Starksforthewin

I was also late to the party with Derry Girls but I think it is sensational writing. Now I watch them on a loop when I need some distraction.

The asides between Gerry and the dad are brilliant. That one where Gerry was writing the chip shop order and he was accused of wanting to starve the family for ‘only’ ordering four bags of chips! Everyone e entering the room had their say on how many bags to order. Brilliant.

The head nun is fantastic, she has no fucks to give. 😂

Cannot wait for S3. Apparently they are busy writing it now.

Yes and did you notice when later they’re in the chip shop the kids order SEVEN bags of chips 🤣🤣 I love that it’s left to our imagination the conversation the adults must have had to end up going from three bags to seven.

Just watching now, just finished first half of the new episode. I think I'd built it up in my mind for so long that so I'm feeling a bit underwhelmed so far! What is everyone else thinking?

Also love the Sister, she's hilarious, and the soundtrack takes me back to my 90s yoof. In the first 2 seasons there's so many moving moments of the conflict perfectly balanced with the humour. I can't think of another show that does it so well.

Gooseysgirl · 12/04/2022 22:27

Without giving anything away, I think the choice of actor for the RUC inspector was inspired Grin

glebaisaword · 13/04/2022 09:01

@Gooseysgirl I agree! Was not expecting that actor at all, brilliant!

Graffittiunderpass · 13/04/2022 14:06

Uncle Colm. What a legend 😆

diddl · 13/04/2022 15:11

I'm so glad there's another series.

I think it was the very first episode "Well I think it's safe to say we all just lost a bit of respect for you there, Clare."

JacquelineCarlyle · 13/04/2022 19:33

I loved it!
