We’ve finish “The Middle” , now what?

At the start of lockdown, with all the DC’s evening activities cancelled, the stated watching “the middle”, 2 or 3 (or 4!) episodes a night for 12 weeks and we finished the last season last night.

I am bereft. I was a little bit in love with the Hecks, I guess because they are a little bit like every family I know. I liked that the kids grew up through the serieses, unlike other shows which stick at the sane age (Maggie Simpson has been a baby for 30 years), I like that it’s gentle comedy and undemanding after a frazzled day of wfh and homeschooling.

What next? How do DH and I fill the time from 10-11pm now? We tried Modern Family, but I don’t get it. I’d it supposed to be funny?

How about;

American housewife .
The detectorists
Malcolm in the middle ( not sure if this is till available to stream)

BikeRunSki · 07/06/2020 12:27

Ah, I love the Detectorists. We must have watched it through at least 3 times!

Never heard of American Housewife, will check it out.

Malcolm in the middle, for sure.

ifeellikeanidiot · 07/06/2020 12:29

I don't know the middle but I'm going to check it out. I'm guessing you're looking for family friendly comedy? My dc are 11 and 12 and Brooklyn 99 remains our favourite.

BikeRunSki · 07/06/2020 16:40

@ifeellikeanidiot, doesn’t have to be family friendly, as we don’t usually settle d or n until the dc (11,8) are in bed, but dd sometimes potters downstairs later.

The middle is just a sitcom of a middle age/class/income US family in the mid West. I like that the 3 kids grow up as the seasons progress. It’s gentle entertainment with very likeable characters.

Modern Family, it's great and you see them all grow up in the same way.

tothesea · 07/06/2020 17:20

The Goldbergs ..similar as in it’s about a family and very very funny.

Floralnomad · 07/06/2020 17:24

Modern Family is good for the first few series and then there was an issue with the writers and it was terrible . You could try W1A if you’ve not seen it .

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 07/06/2020 17:26

I was going to suggest Modern Family.

Also, Malcolm in the Middle.

Agreed. I stopped watching Modern Family when I realized that I didn't like any of the characters.

I just rewatched W1A for the third time. I call it WIA, "wee-uh". That number 1 always throws me off. 😁

bringbacksideburns · 07/06/2020 17:39

I second Modern Family or maybe Young Sheldon.

We used to love The Middle. I still say to dd (17) sometimes "How are things in teen land - kicking it teen style.com?" because Sue Heck is one of my favourite comic creations ever. We also watched it all growing up.

But we never watched the very last season! Can I ask where you watched them all?

bringbacksideburns · 07/06/2020 17:41

And yes to The Goldbergs! its great and loosely based on the writer's own family in the 1980s.

eyesbiggerthanstomach · 07/06/2020 17:45

I was going to also suggest on Netflix Never Have I Ever by Mindy Kaling.

It was so lovely for a teen show but there is only one series so far.

Redcrayons · 07/06/2020 17:50

I love the Middle. It’s one of the few I’ve seen where the kids age really well. The early series Modern Family are brilliant, but I stopped watching a few years ago when I realised it just wasn’t funny anymore.

Brooklyn 99 and Young Sheldon are great and child friendly.
parks and Rec is great (Though the first series takes some time to get going)
the US office is hilarious, even more so when it deviates from the U.K. version.
Goldbergs is good (especially if youre from the 80s)

TheZeppo · 07/06/2020 19:33

I loved The Middle! I recently discovered Sean and Lexi have married in real life. It broke my heart a little that Sue Sue Donahue would never happen in reality 😂

Love The Goldbergs too.

BikeRunSki · 09/06/2020 10:38

@bringbacksideburns, they are all on Prime.

The last series is fantastic. Goes slightly haywire, and ties up the growing up years nicely. Frankie’s voice over at the end of the last one very nearly made me cry!

I've rewatched the middle during lockdown. I've developed quite a crush on Mike. 😳

I love the goldbergs
Life in pieces

Or maybe just restart the middle 🤷🏻‍♀️

Extracurricularfatigue · 26/06/2020 11:53

Oh, this was the exact thread I was about to start! We did the same as you - nine series through lockdown - and are feeling so bereft. DH insisted on watching the pilot again right after the last episode and it was so weird to see them in a different house. He then suggested we watch again from the beginning because we’re both missing the characters. How weird is that? Grin

Have you found something else that suits you? We did watch the first series of the Goldbergs a while back and enjoyed it so we should go back to that. Ditto Modern Family. But neither was quite right.

Mind blown about Lexie and Sean!

Annonymiss123 · 26/06/2020 12:03

Modern Family
Schitts Creek
Grace & Frankie
The Big Bang Theory

FLOrenze · 26/06/2020 12:11

I am binge watching the Politician on netflix

BikeRunSki · 26/06/2020 12:14

@Extracurricularfatigue - like you, we’ve started again. An advantage of falling asleep in front of the TV, is that some of the are “new” to me!

I loved The Middle. I’m just rewatching with DD (11). Life in Pieces on Prime is brilliant & I thought it was better than Modern Family, which I also really enjoyed. Others we’ve watched & would watch again are:
The Goldbergs
Brooklyn nine nine
Parks and Recreation ( the first season isn’t great but stick with it because it’s awesome!)
If anyone finds Malcom in the middle to stream please let me know!!

ifeellikeanidiot · 26/06/2020 12:24

@BikeRunSki thank you for starting this thread. We have binge watched all of it over the last month and it's got us through lockdown.

I am also a bit too into Mike heck. God knows why, I have my own grumpy middle aged man at home Smile

Yes, DH did point out that we both probably have quite a few half watched episodes in us.

It’s been good to watch with the kids though, although the teen started refusing because the parallels between him and Axl got too uncomfortable to watch.

Possibly this too. Is it so wrong?
