Please recommend something we can watch with MIL!

MIL is 89 and shielding. We got her a Facebook Portal and it means we can sort of ‘hang out’ virtually. We want to watch a box set with her and would love recommendations! Ideally Netflix cos we all have that.

Not loads of sex! But she enjoyed Big Little Lies so she can cope with a bit.

Do you have bbc iplayer? What about The Detectorists? I'm not sure if it's on Netflix though.

Rainallnight · 06/06/2020 19:24

Thank you! Normally we would have i player but we’re living abroad at the moment so can’t access it (and haven’t figured out how to do the clever thing of making your internet browser pretend it’s in a different country)

Watching for inspiration. Good thread to start. Thanks

Rainallnight · 06/06/2020 19:44

Welcome XX! Fingers crossed we get some...

The crown

MartySouth · 06/06/2020 20:56

Definitely The Crown!

Faircastle · 06/06/2020 20:58

Sweet Magnolias

Rainallnight · 06/06/2020 21:03

We’ve all seen the Crown sadly, but you’re right on her wavelength!

The Two Popes on Netflix. Watched with elderly mum and she enjoyed.

Esspee · 06/06/2020 21:54

I second The Two Popes. Didn't think I would enjoy it but it was lovely.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 06/06/2020 22:02

Ladies in Black is lovely. Have you/has she seen The King's Speech? There's some old Jonathan Creek on Netflix that I've rewatched recently

Normal People

Justkeeprollingalong · 06/06/2020 22:07

Joke! Tried to watch first episode with 34 year old daughter; had to give up 🤦🏻‍♀️

Pikachubaby · 06/06/2020 22:12

Last tango in Halifax on iPlayer

My parents (mid 80s) love it, me too Grin

theneighbourswindchime · 06/06/2020 22:30

Sweet magnolias

Afterlife

❤️

covetingthepreciousthings · 06/06/2020 22:34

Normal People

Lots of sex in this FYI!

Ettie · 06/06/2020 22:34

I've watched Downton, A Place To Call Home, All The Rivers Run and Paradise as box sets with my DM. recommend all but especially A Place To Call Home. It's like an Australian Downton with less aristocracy!

EllieQ · 06/06/2020 22:38

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries - think it’s on Netflix. Set in 1920s Melbourne and fairly light-hearted for a detective series.

Faircastle · 06/06/2020 23:16

Possibly Medici?

Rainallnight · 07/06/2020 12:34

These are great ideas, thank you so much! Apparently MIL has successfully set herself up on Amazon Prime so that’s an option too now.

Rainallnight · 07/06/2020 12:35

And yep, don’t think I could cope with watching Normal People with MIL, even if we’re not in the same room!

Crinkle77 · 07/06/2020 14:20

Normal People? I assume regard a joke. Don't think it's an 89 year olds cup of tea. Plus it's crap. I switched off after 5 episodes.

PuppyMonkey · 07/06/2020 14:25

Grin at Normal People.

I bet she’d like Anne with an E, OP.

Then, I’d try The Good Wife and that series with Jane Fonda - Frankie and someone or other.

There’s a new one called Hollywood haven’t watched it yet but sounds the ticket.

And if all else fails just do Tiger King.Grin

lightyearsahead · 07/06/2020 14:45

Sweet Magnolias - lovely
Anne with an E - lovely
Ladies in Black - lovely
Hollywood - scenes of sex including male prostituion both with men and woman. Funny & I love it, but maybe not right for 89 MIL unless she is open minded.
The Good Wife & The Good Fight - both good humorous dramas, I enjoy them both.
Suits similar vein.
Frankie & Grace - good funny with mentions of vibrators, lobe and husbands going off with each other. Haven't see season 3 yet.
Amazon Prime - the Marvellous Mrs. Maziel - a bit near the mark but funny
