Anyone watching? I love it so far

Yeah, read the book earlier this year although like most of MN found the characters very young and irritating. Just watched the first episode. Very real sex scenes, was concerned my DC might walk in!

fruitypancake · 28/04/2020 09:31

Yes I thought the same. I love to read but somehow the book passed me by.

Just watched the first episode too after seeing a 5 star review on the Guardian.
It does feel very real, I could feel nervous for them when they were about to kiss the first time.
Brings back great memories from my younger years...
Haven’t read the book so I have no idea what to expect, but will Definitely binge watch over the next couple of days.

Potatobug · 28/04/2020 14:25

It looks like trouble. Popular boy wants to keep fuck buddy a secret.
Hmm
Btw I don’t understand why everybody hates the girl. Not one friend? Seriously? Why?

fruitypancake · 28/04/2020 14:31

Yes, I felt v sorry for her but from what I gather he gets a taste of his own medicine when they go off to uni

Just started it
read the reviews and they were so good it has peaked my interest.

Superfoodie123 · 28/04/2020 15:10

On episode 5 and I really like it so far. Really reminds me of how intense it felt to fall in love for the first time.

B0bbin · 28/04/2020 20:07

I loved the book and I think I love the series even more. The acting is amazing...

fruitypancake · 28/04/2020 20:53

I'm on about episode 7 or 8 now.. love it and the music

Superb. What brilliant acting. She was in cold feet i think. Very very good and very refreshing to watch many major and important issues - consent, depression, abuse, anxiety - dealt with so well.

Fleetheart · 28/04/2020 21:01

It is so good; I’ve watched 11 episodes; just one to go. Great acting, lovely Irish voices and scenery!

Bool · 29/04/2020 07:25

Very rarely think this- but I think the series is better than the book. Far more intense and deep.

CountFosco · 29/04/2020 20:20

She's rich, smart and very self contained because of her home life. In a small town that can be unforgivable.

I watched the first couple of episodes yesterday, then bought the book, read that and binge watched the rest today. I don't normally do that but had things on my mind so it was a good distraction lol

I won't give spoilers so will just talk about the first part, the way he treated her came across so much worse in the book. He treats her the same in the tv series but because we're hearing their inner thoughts in the book it just seems way worse, that he would be that ashamed of anyone knowing that he would make her keep it a secret, and it's so sad that she knows he would be ashamed but still sees him.

I'm so happy I found this thread! I just finished binge-watchign the whole series and I really enjoyed it. The acting was great and I now have an indecent crush on the male lead actor who must be twenty years younger than me Blush

I have to say though the character of Marianne was really frustrating, the actor who played her was great, it's just her character. This is probably because I had a boring happy childhood and loving parents so I tend not to really ''get it'' about people who in engage in self-destructive behaviours and seem unable to stop themselves. I've known one or two similar people in life and I have found it frustrating to be around.

Me too, he's 24 so half my age!

Rainbunny · 03/05/2020 14:14

CountFosco lol!

I started out watching it on tv in our living room but after a few episodes I started watching it on my laptop by myself in the spare bedroom (currently my office), so I could enjoy watching the show gorgeous Irish actor without trying to pretend I wasn't staring with my DH sat next to me!

covetingthepreciousthings · 03/05/2020 14:47

If you go onto his Instagram he has some videos of him singing, and he has a lovely voice too and plays the piano..

Fleetheart · 03/05/2020 21:06

He is just gorgeous; and at 30 years younger than me just a little too young! It takes us back to our younger days doesn’t it, and to the excitement of our first love. I have to say that it did remind me of my university boyfriend (who I am still in touch with now and again), and it did make me get in touch. Not for anything untoward of course, but just nice to still be in touch even though our lives have gone different ways.

Karcheer · 03/05/2020 21:13

@fleetheart it reminded me so much of my first boyfriend I met in 6th form, I’ve only watched the first two episodes, but it brought it all back to me. We are still in touch (once a year ish) and I will definitely msg him at some point. I loved watching it as it was such a happy time in my life. We had a very messy break up over many years, so I’ve a feeling the rest of the series may bring back other memories...

TokyoSushi · 03/05/2020 21:14

I'm 40, and a little bit in love with Connell 😍😳

Springtime003 · 03/05/2020 22:20

Can’t stop thinking about Connell after finishing this a week ago

Rainbunny · 04/05/2020 14:38

The show really does a really good job of demonstrating the authentic intensity and emotions of thsoe years.

It's really made me nostalgic for how intense my emotions (and hormones!) were back then. I remember at one point when I was about 18, I physically and emotionally yearned for someone so strongly I could barely breathe.

Hormones are wasted on the young! I didn't appreciate them back, well I suppose I thought I'd always feel the way I felt then.

Member984815 · 06/05/2020 07:50

I'm from the sameish part of Ireland , the exteriors for it were filmed in my husband's hometown . I thought it was a great portrayal of what it's like to grow up in a rural town in Ireland . You can feel the heartbreak coming off the screen when Marianne tells connell to go after he tells her he's bringing Rachel to the Deb's , such a betrayal. I'm watching weekly

Womanlywiles · 07/05/2020 02:44

I haven'r read the book but apparently from reviews I have read comparing the series and book, Marianne is considered quite disgusting by kids in her school. She has crooked front teeth, hairy legs, wears ugly heavy bottomed shoes and is a bit of a grotesque, who doesn't know how to make herself attractive to her peers. When she spills the yogurt down her front in the book it apparently is much more embarrassing and messy. People find her physically abhorrent and so Connell struggles with his attraction to her and how he would be mocked at school for doing so.
