I never before realised the importance of a studio audience. This just feels weird and not funny. They need to be together to play off each other.

It wasn't very funny but they're on a learning curve. They should watch The Mash Report which I found much funnier. Possibly it was less live but the format of frequent switching to different people worked well.

SoupDragon · 04/04/2020 12:39

I think it's admirable the way they are working to find ways to keep these shows going. I doubt it's something they'd ever planned to do!

LIZS · 04/04/2020 12:52

Agree it is interesting seeing what their homes are like and backgrounds they choose, although noting increasing use of stunt plants and fruit bowl (including the odd pineapple), clear surfaces and learned books (liked the swipe at Ian Hislop's last night!). Alex Brooker at least showed plastic pink toys scattered about and uncooperative toddlers eating lunch!

I just saw an ad for some kind of version of The Graham Norton Show - Friday 9.00pm BBC1.

I found HIGNFY rather painful viewing as much as I really wanted it to work.

Pelleas · 04/04/2020 13:23

There'll also be a financial hit in making this series, because I doubt the BBC will be able to sell it afterwards to the Dave channel and other places where repeats normally pop up.

grafittiartist · 04/04/2020 13:36

Just watched it- really enjoyed it! Properly laughed.
We're all having to compromise at the moment- it's good to see life carrying on as normally as possible.

Wakeupsunshine · 04/04/2020 17:50

It was a bit odd but I still laughed!

TorchesTorches · 05/04/2020 11:10

I thought it was pretty good given the circumstances. I really like Steph and I thought that all the guests were great. Probably good that they were all nice/ sympathetic types. Sometimes they have on a bit if a pantomime villain, so wild be interested to see how that works in the dynamic.

It did feel stilted, but I dont really see how they could do it better.

Papergirl1968 · 05/04/2020 16:59

I thought it was dreadful. It usually makes me lol but not this time.
Just didn’t work.

StCharlotte · 05/04/2020 17:57

I'm assuming (as per my comment above) that they won't be doing it again.

Happy to be proved wrong.

Clawdy · 06/04/2020 08:04

Think it is on again next week with Stephen Mangan hosting. Really like him, but wont be watching. Not working for me.

englishmummyinwales · 06/04/2020 14:02

@Kuponut Miles Jupp lives in a fairly bright orange house - in my town!

species5618 · 07/04/2020 02:26

I found it excruciating, but partner thought it excellent. Confused.
Shows how much preparation, editing, scripting and retakes go into the recorded shows - I'm assuming the team had less time to film this episode.

AllTheseThingsThatIHaveNotDone · 07/04/2020 02:36

I felt the same way about Last Week Tonight. Love John Oliver - still laughed a few times but it definitely felt weird, tumbleweedy, even though I knew which places you were meant to laugh at, I am clearly used to laughing with.

Trumpspeach · 07/04/2020 02:41

I'll keep watching it out of loyalty and Stephen Mangan is my celebrity crush
As a PP said, they're on a learning curve. As this continues these shows will get more polished.

AllTheseThingsThatIHaveNotDone · 07/04/2020 06:59

Well I just watched it on Iplayer and really enjoyed it - you guys really really need to see Last week tonight and it compares favourably! - No, genuinely I laughed a lot - Ian Hislop laughing was contagious and Steph is a fantastic presenter, I had no idea. So it just seemed like a nice little group chat and only a couple of wincing tumbleweeds, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did like John Oliver interviewed by Stephen Colbert too. I am easily pleased, I only really need a couple of people riffing off each other to be happy Smile

Papergirl1968 · 11/04/2020 19:52

Friday’s was slightly better in that I chuckled a couple of times but that was at the videos shown such as the sheep on the roundabout.
It all felt rather forced somehow.

MrAlyhakinsMassiveYacht · 11/04/2020 20:34

That was better than the week before. The Mash Report is working better because of the pre-recorded bits and Nish seems to do his opening better than either Steph or Stephen.

TreeTopTim · 12/04/2020 09:12

I switched off this week and won't be watching again. The first week was ok and a bit of a novelty but this week was rubbish. The sound quality was poor for a start.

SoupDragon · 12/04/2020 09:31

What sort of sound quality are you expecting from people's webcams?
