This series was so much better than I hoped for

Julia Garner's Ruth continues to steal every scene she's in

They may have thieved Laura Linney's plot from Love Actually but it worked so well and the actor playing Ben was so good.

Wyatt and Darlene should have been disgusting but was oddly touching

I 100% believe that Marty and Wendy will ultimately be brought down by Charlotte and Jonah consciously choosing to turn on them.

Shooting Helen was a great moment but one I didn't think made sense. She had the manufactured evidence Marty was a grass in her bag.

Wyatt and Darlene was just Envy

I love Julia Garner but I think Ruth has become two-dimensional this season. Considering her character has been developing humanity over the past two seasons, all she's done so far this season is scowl and swear a lot. I'm only halfway through so perhaps she has an arc.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 01/04/2020 23:16

Found you!!

I love Ruth. She’s my favourite character. It was nice to see her have some joy in her life finally! If briefly! Poor Ruth. And Ben Sad how lovely was he?

Wendy is so understated in her awesomeness. She has some serious balls.

Helen! Shock was not expecting that ending! I will miss helen. She was a great character.

Wyatt and Darlene Envy

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 01/04/2020 23:18

but one I didn't think made sense. She had the manufactured evidence Marty was a grass in her bag.

Yes that’s why I wasn’t expecting it. I thought surely she would get to do something with that “evidence” but now it’s wasted?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 01/04/2020 23:27

What about now Helen is dead, she will eventually be reported missing and Erin knows more than enough to completely fuck the Byrdes ?

Navarro obviously saw them as obedient and Helen as making a power play, but it was a bit of a writing dead end.

Though now the FBI has it signed, is he legally obliged to grass?

I think they have got off very lightly from the FBI so far, absurdly lightly actually.

OP posts:
EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 01/04/2020 23:34

Also, the reason I think that it will be the Byrde's children who eventually see them sent to prison, is that they are both already accessories - eventually it could come down to trading their parents freedom for their own

OP posts:
JuanSheetIsPlenty · 01/04/2020 23:46

Well it looks like they’re setting up Ruth to turn against the byrdes and join Darlene so it might be her that causes their undoing. Although she’ll hanging herself out to dry as well if she does.

shirleyschmidt · 02/04/2020 01:15

Just finished! Enjoyed it so much more than 1&2 - it was totally exciting and tense, a proper binge watch.

Thought the dynamic between Marty and Wendy was great, and the kids were quite good too - thank god they wrote Charlotte so differently, as she was insufferable before. Some real humour in this season too, especially with the therapist Sue (RIP). Liked the addition of Agent Miller and her crazy high bump.

I do think it lost its way in the penultimate couple of episodes, too much focus on Ben and that storyline dragged for me. He was a great character and very well acted but I wasn't sorry when Wendy eventually dobbed him in 🤭

Wyatt and Darlene was horribly grim and cringe but certainly sets up an interesting dynamic 🤷‍♀️

I was a bit disappointed Ruth didn't get her moment against Frank Jr, and that M&W didn't do more to avenge her. Hopefully she doesn't turn on the Byrdes, but it's looking very likely. Darlene is a great character but I don't want her to 'win'!

Sad to see Helen go, she was defo one of the best in it.

No idea where they'll go next! I think Jonah might become an antagonist but that ultimately family loyalty will win out.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 02/04/2020 01:21

Oh Darlene wont "win" she's too unstable

Ruth will eventually find herself needing to usurp her

OP posts:
JuanSheetIsPlenty · 02/04/2020 01:43

Yeah so much for Ruth being “untouchable”! That was all just lip service from Marty. When it came down to it frank jr beat her half to death and Marty did absolutely nothing!! Poor Ruth.

halfgirlhalfturnip · 02/04/2020 12:45

Fabulous - thanks for starting this thread!

halfgirlhalfturnip · 02/04/2020 12:47

I loved the couple of scenes when wyatt and Ruth properly laughed - their stories are really well told ! Why is Ruth still living there though?

I thought Darlene and wyatt were horrendous at first and I used to really dislike Darlene but I didn't hate their dynamic and enjoyed her character season 3.

kennypppppppp · 02/04/2020 16:30

watching ben I was thinkin of Wendy's brother in the c word. the brother who lived in a skip. her name wasn't wendy in the c word but I loved her brother, character wise, and she always gets paired with the entertaining brother character. (the actual plot of Ozark I can not always follow. but knowing who her brother is, I do).

wonder if Darlene and wyatt have an insta page. what's going to happen with zeke?? is he going to learn to shift all that darn product (said in a Darlene drawl) when he's home-schooled. hmmmm.

Cocolapew · 08/04/2020 23:23

I loved Darlene for some bizarre reason.
I genuinely was shocked when Helen copped it, I thought it was going to end with Marty trying to tell his side.
Really enjoyed this season, everyone in it are awful human beings though Hmm

burntpinky · 15/04/2020 13:10

Thought this was the best series so far and that ending!!!! Complete shock!! Ruth definitely was developed more. The actor playing Ben was outstanding

Chicksy · 15/04/2020 21:41

Roll on season 4

TheRealKimmySchmidt63 · 19/04/2020 00:17

Thought it was a lazy ending - should've been played out better than that made no sense
However great series - Darlene grew on me thought Zeke was missing a bit in s3. Ben great acting
Poor Jonah he's a mini Martin
Agree with po Marty treated Ruth poorly good watch all in all

cushioncovers · 21/04/2020 11:06

Great series really enjoyed it. Ending was shocking and abrupt. But made sense to me.
I think Helen was becoming a problem for Navarro. She was willing to stitch up Wendy & Marty to stay in favour with Navarro thinking he would be impressed but in fact it did the opposite. Whereas the Byrd's showed Navarro that they are loyal to him by sacrificing a family member.

Inkanta · 21/04/2020 21:25

Wow Ben - what a great character and fantastic acting!

KayakingOnDown · 22/04/2020 20:49

Great series. They are now horrible people (well have been since series 1) but for the sake of Charlotte and jonah I really want the Byrd family to get out. I hope next season they finally escape.

It's a well-written series and the acting is excellent - in some cases superb. I just love Laura Linney.

KingaRoo · 22/04/2020 20:57

I'm loving this. Found season 1 dragged a bit but persevered and think it is going from strength to strength.

I think the Byrde family are all brilliant actors. Charlotte has this weird kind of unusual beauty. Wendy is strong as fuck and has taken a backseat to Marty all her life to suddenly realise she is strong enough to do whatever she wants. Marty seems like a nice guy who wants to do the right things but is way too far down the wrong path and can't turn back. It's all a bit like breaking bad really.

KayakingOnDown · 22/04/2020 21:11

Yeah Marty does seem like a nice guy who has just got out of his depth. In season 1, it was all about protecting his family. I love how they're getting deeper in every series and it's actually getting darker and taking more of a toll on the children. The character of Ben was fantastic - a fully rounded character in his own right yet a symbol of how vulnerable and dispensable everyone now is.

HopeOverFear · 24/04/2020 10:50

I have just come across this series, watched from the beginning over last couple of weeks and if honest I am really not sure if I like it or hate it haha.
Looked out this thread in interest of others views, Mostly on Wendy as if honest she really ruins the show for me. I now have a feeling I will be in the minority on this. She Annoyed me a little at the start but for the majority of season 3 I have absolutely hated her with a passion!! Marty's rant at her in the therapist house nailed it for me haha.
I wasn't sure if it's the character and you meant to hate her as she becomes more power hungry and greedy but loads people seem to love her. She always seems to have this condescending, smug arrogant face! I am dying for someone to shut her up!
I can't decide if Marty and Wendy still love each other or hate each other.
I don't understand why the massively powerful drug cartel put up with Jacob and Darlene! (I liked Jacob)
I really liked Ruth's arc but agree with someone who said she was a little more one dimensional this season. Although chucking frank Jr off the boat was great!
Ben was a good character who I liked and I thought although brief his character demonstrated his illness really well but was still the most sane person in it! Haha
Didn't see the end with Helen coming though!

ihatethecold · 24/04/2020 11:00

I found episode 8 incredible to watch for more personal reasons. I felt so much for Wendy in the car when she was saying she didn't know what to do with Ben. He was vulnerable but causing so much danger and trouble for the family. She looked like the anguish and pain was so real.

My son was very mentally unwell in 2016 and I remember sitting in my car with him after he had released from A+E again, it was late at night and I just didn't know what the hell to do. he couldn't come home with me. it was so awful.

Ben's tears around knowing something is wrong but he cant stop it or understand it was so touching.. it made my heart hurt watching it.

He is a brilliant actor.

raydeeo · 24/04/2020 14:25

I loved this series too. I loved all of them actually. I actually really like the Byrde family - even though if it was real life I am sure I would hate them. I especially like Marty, probably down to the actor, there's something likeable about him for me.
Helen getting shot was a real shock to me though, I had to go back and watch the final scene a few times. What will happen to Erin? I expect we will hear somewhere down the line she is dead along with her dad and brother in a car accident or house fire or something. That guy Nelson must have been aware that Ben spilled the beans. We saw just how ruthless his character is. Helen asked him early on in the series if he'd give her a heads up when it was her time to go. He said he would. Did he fuck!!
Oh yes, the word fuck....Ruth's swearing is a bit much at times....would someone running what is meant to be a professional and classy casino be swearing within hearing range and having all those arguments where everyone can see!? Not a good look.
However unlike many, I really didn't like the Ben story arc and the character annoyed me quite a lot. Mental illness is always glamourised and romanticised on tv, and this was no exception. If Wendy really knew her brother she would have shipped him out the next day with some money a house to go to far away and a project to do or something. If she did want him around then fine, but as soon as she saw the warning signs and him stopping medication she'd have sent him somewhere else then. She has the money and influence to have done that. It was clear the writers wanted a mentally ill character and a story arc that took Wendy up to the next level - so fine, but write it in a way that doesn't mean your audience has to suspend too much disbelief. Also, the 'horror' of an inpatient psychiatric facility was over played and unhelpful. Don't know, maybe the US is wildly different but here that's not really how I've ever seen anyone behave. (Mostly people can't wait to get a bed somewhere!) But regardless, I find it too distracting when old tropes are used in this lazy way.
I will still be watching whenever the next series is out. I hope it's not delayed too long.
Oh, and what became of the old lady who rolled down the hill into the water? Did she just die?! Didn't seem that bad a fall. Wouldn't there have been a massive investigation seeing as there was an aggressive takeover, possible bankruptcy and a fire - all involving her business in days leading up to her death? Did I miss something?!

KayakingOnDown · 25/04/2020 14:19

I agree you have to suspend your disbelief a bit.

But I found it powerful that the supposedly mentally ill person - Ben - was the only one speaking sense and the only one with any perspective or moral compass. It was so damning. I get that it may have been romanticising mental illness, but it was beautifully done.
