VivaLeBeaver · 23/03/2020 20:00

Fab, thanks. Something to look forward to.

Paddingtonthebear · 23/03/2020 20:03

Sorry haven’t read the full thread but what age is this suitable for? My DD is 7yrs old in year 2

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 23/03/2020 20:09

Forgot about this, thanks for the reminder!! Saw that they were coming to Iplayer the other day and got a little giddy Blush Grin
Used to love Malory Towers.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/03/2020 20:10

Was it Malory Towers where their summer dresses had to be the same style but they could have different colours? Or was that St Clare's? I always thought that was odd, and then I found out that my school used to have that too!

There's something not quite right about their uniforms. I don't think the cardigans would have been badged, that looks wrong to me. I think just the blazer would have been, but that's a minor quibble! Presumably next series they'll be in gymslips when it's the autumn term.

I am slightly confused about them playing lacrosse in the summer term, I'd have thought they'd be doing tennis and athletics (and swimming of course, that pool looks gorgeous!).

QueenOfTheAndals · 23/03/2020 20:12

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams that was St Clare's but it was only mentioned in one book.

missyB1 · 23/03/2020 20:44

@Paddingtonthebear I would say 7 years onwards. My ds age 11 watched it with me and loved it. There’s nothing unpleasant in it.

sulkyswede · 23/03/2020 20:59

I'd say it was fine for year 2 onwards.

jackparlabane · 23/03/2020 21:23

My 8yo who has read all the books just watched 4 episodes on the trot.

JudyCoolibar · 23/03/2020 21:48

Presumably next series they'll be in gymslips when it's the autumn term.

I think the grey skirts and white blouses some of them wear are the winter uniform.

I liked it that it was Jean who asked Gwen sarkily how she could possibly cope with a mark on her face.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 23/03/2020 22:20

We watched the first two episodes tonight. I love how properly horrible Gwen is - sorry Gwendoline Mary, but I agree Alicia's American accent is grating. I always had her down as blonde and cool.

ilovemyrednosedaymug · 23/03/2020 22:49

We’ve watched several episodes tonight and really enjoyed it. I agree it’s all a bit Worst Witch/Hetty Feather but DD loves it.

JudyCoolibar · 23/03/2020 23:22

The release of this is perfectly timed, tonight I really feel I need this escapism. Off for some binge-watching ...

Mymymycorona · 24/03/2020 00:20

Always imagined the first 6 books would be my mastermind subject. I'm nearly afraid to watch this though incase it taints my love of these books...

CrocodileFondue · 24/03/2020 00:30

No! It's so terrible! None of the characters are right at all. Gwendolyn Mary isn't bad it the others are awful. I won't be watching anymore.

missyB1 · 24/03/2020 07:55

Slightly disappointing because the as Crocodile said the characters aren't quite right. But still enjoyable and 11 year old ds is loving it.

parrotonmyshoulder · 24/03/2020 08:06

My 10 year old and I watched the first episode yesterday. She loved it but gave a minute by minute critique is exactly what should have been said, by whom, and in what tone of voice. Whose hair was curled slightly wrong or was the wrong shade of brown. She knew which scenes had been used from which book, and which had been ‘just made up!’ (Shock horror!). She is a Malory Towers mastermind and would love this thread.
She did the same with His Dark Materials too and is quite unbearable to watch Harry Potter with!

Momniscient · 24/03/2020 08:13

What brilliant news. I don't think I remember enough from the books to know for certain what's new, although the few bits I do remember I'd better see in the series!

Youngatheart00 · 24/03/2020 08:14

Fab news and fab timing!

I hear The Babysitters Club is coming to Netflix too! More childhood nostalgia

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/03/2020 08:47

I’m Loving it and all scenes remind me of the books

Love the pool

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 24/03/2020 10:09

Has anybody else looked up the St Trinian’s hockey match on YouTube as the antidote for the jolly japes at Malory Towers?

Disclaimer: I love MT and am gutted that I’m not going to see it at the theatre (3 generations of MTlovers were due to go).

SingforAbsolution · 24/03/2020 10:13

OMG, how did I not know about this?!

JudyCoolibar · 24/03/2020 10:20

I think you just have to take it for what it is and not get wound up by what is and isn't true to the books.

I'm slightly bemused by the lack of staff at MT. Miss Potts seems to teach absolutely everything and still be ready to wake the children up in the morning, and they draft Matey in to invigilate tests. To say nothing of using the Head Girl as a free teacher ...

QueenOfTheAndals · 24/03/2020 11:39

@Youngatheart00 Are they really doing an adaptation of BSC? There was one in the 90s (and a movie) but it wasn't very good and Kristy was super-annoying. They'll be rebooting Sweet Valley High next!

Standrewsschool · 24/03/2020 14:59

Really enjoyed this series. Loved St Clares and Mallory Towers as a child.

Pure escaspism.

Jolly hockey sticks!

Youngatheart00 · 24/03/2020 15:30

@QueenOfTheAndals yes they are! I forget where I read about it now, but the show is on Netflix if you search for it, just no UK release date yet. I didn’t like the BSC movie either, the original TV series was ok (say hello to your friends....Babysitters Club! Theme tune) but not a patch on the books. I loved them all, originals, mysteries, super specials! I recently found out Ann M Martin didn’t write them all and the majority of the later ones were ghost written, bit sad about that! But I suppose they did churn them out.
