So I had a look and I couldn't find a thread for this series (apologies if there is one already and if someone could link me!) so I thought I'd start one.

Who is looking forward to the new series starting tonight at 8bells on BBC2??

I liked this group yesterday. Today they have lost the plot, especially with those pre desserts.

PotterHead1985 · 07/05/2020 20:35

He didn't like them either.

Lovage sorbet and heather custard..err, yummy. Confused

qate · 07/05/2020 20:37

@jay55 I'm pretty sure the chefs have not been told it's children's literature as the theme. They think it's any old book or story. And clearly kids at the banquet is a secret as hearts at all, let alone rare (I'm with mammy potter on that one) sounds insane.

All of this x 2!!

Just watched last night's episodes - I fussed about fish course, but some great starters which actually resembled the brief. Off to watch tonight's now - albeit late!!

qate · 07/05/2020 20:38

*unfussed

PotterHead1985 · 07/05/2020 20:38

Ants and crickets. Nooo thank you

Toilet water colouring again

I think the fact that there are kids at the banquet would have been a great excuse to do some "fun" dishes - bit like the ice cream machine one from a year or two ago. Totally missed a trick on that one...

jay55 · 07/05/2020 20:41

Bugs again.
At least it's not maggots.

PotterHead1985 · 07/05/2020 20:42

EXACTLY

FliesandPies · 07/05/2020 20:49

'Do you think the flavour of the ants comes through enough?' lol Grin

PotterHead1985 · 07/05/2020 20:50

Shudder

This last one, is like a fancy version of mini egg nests. I think shredded wheat would have been nicer than shredded filo.

PotterHead1985 · 07/05/2020 20:51

That drink sounds rank

Arriving late & on catch-up but who in their right mond purees black pudding? The crumbly texture is 90% of the point....

Egghead68 · 07/05/2020 22:47

Apart from the egg in the nest none of it looked nice.

LaMarschallin · 08/05/2020 10:01

I thought the chocolate work on the eggs looked amazing - so pleased they worked.

It's weird, mentions keep being made of children being at the banquet, but I think that last night Tom was the first person who pointed out that there'd have to be a non-alcoholic version of something.

There've been loads of dishes that have had a lot of alcohol in them, along with other dishes that - with the best will in the world - aren't child-friendly.
And, honestly, I don't think that there should always be a "nuggets and chips" option; I was very keen to educate my DDs about food and encouraged them to try new things.
But I think a lot of children would look askance at the various meat and fish tartares, for example.
And truffles (especially in the wallet-emptying quantities used in some dishes Smile) will be very strong for younger children's more sensitive palates.

I wonder what the ages of the children will be? Maybe they mean teenagers.

FliesandPies · 08/05/2020 12:57

All those hideous lumps of rare meat, surely that's not for kids? And I haven't seen any kids on the judges table. It's all very confused

TrashKitten10 · 08/05/2020 19:35

Joining the thread to say I never want to hear the phrase 'pre-pudding pudding' ever again.

Also really disappointed the brief seems completely lost this year. It's either the same books being chosen again and again or a story being shoehorned into an already created restaurant dish. The steak and chips this week was dedicated to the chef's own family history of steel working, it was clear it had nothing to do with the book he had happened to find about steelworks. It's like most of them create the dishes then do a google search for a book they can unimaginatively link to it. There was so much potential for fun and creativity with this brief but it's mostly fallen short. However lovely the chef's dad's favourite steak and chips meal was, it has nothing to do with children's literature. They need to either make sure people follow the brief or ditch it altogether.

Grumpbum123 · 08/05/2020 19:58

I thought that about kids being present and being offered duck hearts. Mine would get up and run

PotterHead1985 · 08/05/2020 20:03

I'd get up and run never mind the kids!!!

Okay I totally thought the woman went home yesterday.
Yay for a proper children's author on the panel tonight. She puts all the other guest judges so far in the shade it's unreal.

GrouchyKiwi · 08/05/2020 20:11

Who is the guest judge tonight? Julia Donaldson was on a couple of weeks ago, she was a decent choice.

Thought the dishes yesterday were a let-down, apart from Alex's lovely dessert.
