had hopes for this, but just silly...

Yep and they forgot to make the couple even remotely likeable.

Arcadia · 13/03/2020 08:25

Too much swearing and making a joke about family annihilation is a bit off in my view Hmm

MrsJamin · 13/03/2020 09:55

Very odd profile of a family - who is that well to do and says the F word and C word to their children? It doesn't really ring true. It's ok but not as good as Motherhood or the first few series of Catastrophe.

Nowifi · 13/03/2020 10:56

I really like it must be the only one! But hated Motherhood so I must have a completely different sense of humour!

amaryl · 13/03/2020 11:32

I'm actually a bit worried about the child actors with all this language!

sluj · 13/03/2020 12:52

Managed 5 minutes then I was defeated by the swearing. I'm not a prude but there was no need for that onslaught.

Rainbowb · 13/03/2020 13:44

I disagree. I thought the swearing was ott and spoilt it as it became hard to sympathise with him as he effed aggressively at his children. However, we have been through a nightmare these last couple of months after dd’s school played a trick on the children pretending there was a break-in and now dd has difficultly sleeping because of a fear of intruders. So the scenes where the boy is fretting about fires and the Dad just makes it worse whatever he says, made me laugh at our predicament for the first time ever.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 13/03/2020 13:58

I thought this was going to be hilarious, but actually it made me feel uncomfortable.

florentina1 · 14/03/2020 15:12

I am sure that, if this was a lower class family swearingat the kids, it would not be billed as comedy. I thought it was dire

Bluewavescrashing · 14/03/2020 15:15

Way off the mark. I love both the lead actors in other things but it wasn't funny, made me cringe and I felt sorry for the children tbh.

Aragog · 14/03/2020 15:32

I'm glad others felt the same re the swearing and that the swearing was aimed at the children. It just felt wrong. We only watched til the first break on the first episode. I just didn't like it, neither did Dh. We kept reading reviews saying how good it was but it's clearly not for us.

Findumdum1 · 14/03/2020 22:27

Same her, it was too much. I swear and am not precious about swearing, and we've all occasionally lost our tempers and sworn at the kids, well I have, but that was too much. That would be abusive in real life. I stopped watching too.

jopjop · 14/03/2020 22:38

I felt really sad for the kids!

MrsTWH · 15/03/2020 01:27

I agree, totally missed the mark for me too. I’d be really concerned if anyone I knew spoke to their kids like that.

I did see an interview with Martin Freeman and they didn’t swear at all in front of the child actors. When you see his face and he’s ranting, the children aren’t on set. When you see the children, you’re only seeing the back of his head and the swearing is dubbed.

BitOfFun · 15/03/2020 02:01

That's fascinating, MrsTWH!

I quite liked it, but I watched it believing that the swearing was more in his head than out loud, IYSWIM.

amaryl · 15/03/2020 12:39

MrsTw- that's what I was trying to work out, I thought it must be the case!

burnoutbabe · 15/03/2020 13:04

I enjoyed it!
But I don't want kids ever so it seemed to reinforce that :-)

Findumdum1 · 15/03/2020 13:43

I thought it was quite unrealistic as well. I dont know anyone with kids that age that kept them up ALL night. Babies maybe or the odd night when sick but not like that..And you wouldn't have them downstairs in the living room doing push ups!

LefttoherownDevizes · 15/03/2020 13:47

I loved Motherland, swear like a trooper and watch Benidorm for fun . I had to turn this off, the swearing at the children is too much. And agreed they're not likeable. I was disappointed and had hoped for more.

PNomintrude · 15/03/2020 13:48

I read an interview with Martin Freeman a month or so about this, he was talking about how close to reality it was and the kinds of things he'd said to his children (little fuckers I think) and the fact he's slapped them in the past. It made him sound like a very unpleasant bully with an anger problem so I wasn't well disposed towards the programme anyway (I haven't seen it though to be fair!)

MrsJamin · 15/03/2020 13:50

Yeah it was ridiculous. Have the writers even had children? It was written by men, I think it is telling that Motherland and Catastrophe ring more true for me, written by mostly women.

IntermittentParps · 15/03/2020 14:42

who is that well to do and says the F word and C word to their children
What, only poor/common people swear at their children? Confused

draygo · 15/03/2020 16:37

I have heard that Martin Freeman is a massive prick tbh.

BitOfFun · 15/03/2020 16:44

@draygo, do go on...

Bluewavescrashing · 15/03/2020 16:51

Motherland is awesome.

I may watch it again this afternoon 😊
