Same as others. Didn’t think much of it :(

And have deleted series link off planner

It must be rubbish. I rarely do that

mrwalkensir · 23/03/2020 23:58

just catching up with last week's one. House full of precipitous stairs etc just designed for falling down. Weird lack of actually considering what children can do/what do expect from them. Seems weird bearing in mind the writers and Daisy Haggard

It's a cartoonish exaggeration people! Not everything has to be steeped in realism!

Also are the child actors actually being sworn at? Or is it cleverly cut?

tobee · 26/03/2020 15:52

And dubbed?

And what does it matter if Martin Freeman is a massive prick?

MrsJamin · 26/03/2020 21:38

Third episode isn't getting any better - who calls a child twat?

IntermittentParps · 27/03/2020 10:53

tobee, someone answers that upthread (about the swearing/editing).

midsomermurderess · 27/03/2020 15:24

I don't like it. His anger towards his fairly ordinarily behaved young children makes me quite uneasy. I don't laugh at any of it.

MrsJamin · 27/03/2020 16:44

I just had a look at twitter - most of the people who love it are men - I don't think they have written this from a mother's point of view at all. I mean, which mother says 'do this or I'll shoot you' even in jest? So odd, I don't think they got a proper cross section of people to review this before they did a whole season for Sky.

Heygirlheyboy · 28/03/2020 11:34

And the fact that the mother isn't overly put out by him...

CottonHeadedNinyMuggins · 03/04/2020 14:45

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't like it and thought it too much!

Everything else I've read everyone was raving about it and a few like 'lol, I've found my family in a show!' but mostly I just totally hated Martin Freeman's character and couldn't watch more than the first 2 episodes.

He really is a massive arsehole in it! The mum not so bad (in the 2 I watched) I can totally understand why she'd think that he'd killed the kids and called the police out to look for them if that's how he behaves!!

Not sure why I've stuck this to the end - think just due to a lingering crush on Addison after Lab Rats and I like Daisy Haggard. But it's so bad that this is meant to be a traumatic episode and I feel nothing for the children or Freeman at all. Normally I'd be quite emotional. It's that bad.

I'm glad I've seen this thread. I watched one episode and was wondering who on earth wrote it. They can't have had children for real. At that age there's no way they'd be up that late unless some form of proper learning disability or mental health crisis. And the real hatred from the dad to the kids was just not funny. It was without any sense of satire or removed from reality. It was played straight and felt uncomfortable. Aaand, well in our house anyway, if one parent is heading towards unhinged meltdown the other compensates and is nice to the kids and calms the mood. They don't bloody join in!
Maybe it improves but I'm not even giving it a chance after the pilot.

Booboodisney · 03/05/2020 11:10

I thought the son was too old looking to act the way he acted. Might just have been that the actor was 8/9 playing a 6ish year old? Don’t want this to sound horrible or anything but it more came off to me that was maybe not entirely Neurotypical which then just coloured the way they act toward him and made it seem weird and a bit mean.

The swearing was a bit much - you can control yourself a bit more around your kids. And her dad annoyed me. Again, the London life thing - nice house in leafy inner London etc yet they were supposed to be ‘the poor relations’ at school. Bit weird but then again I don’t understand London life so may be lost on me.

See I thought this was a bit rubbish after the first episode, but watched a few more and have enjoyed it much, much more as it's gone on. I think it's a grower! I now realise it's not just a straight out comedy, there's some real family drama in there too. Looking forward to the next episode. I knew there no way a cast like this would be in a shit TV show. I'm a fan. Judging by this thread my opinion is not the norm though! Hoping it will get a second series (think episode 10 is the last?).

nowifi · 03/05/2020 22:59

I really liked it, I must be in the minority!

Bertucci · 05/05/2020 22:16

I enjoyed it. I was a bit wtf at first, but it's worth sticking with it and I found much of it quite moving.
