My mum was fairly ok with things I watched, but when my dad was home we weren't allowed:
Grange Hill,
Top if the pops,
Dallas
Dynasty
Defenders
Corrie
In fact any soaps were a no no
Sweeney

What we were allowed to watch was any shit sexist/racist/homophobic crap from the 70s, ain't half hot mum, steptoe, Alf garnet. Dad's Army, blackadder, the news, the weather (lunch time, 6pm and 9/10pm), minder, Benny hill, anything to do with John Denver or the carpenters.

IamHyouweegobshite · 22/12/2019 22:02

Eastenders not defenders

isabellerossignol · 22/12/2019 22:02

I wasn't allowed to watch anything like Fraggle Rock or The Muppets. Nothing with puppets! Confused

Angie6868 · 22/12/2019 22:04

That's Life

lellikelly2 · 22/12/2019 22:07

And and all soaps.

lellikelly2 · 22/12/2019 22:07

*any Hmm

Time40 · 22/12/2019 22:09

What was wrong with itv, seems to be a thing?!

Adverts. Adverts were not nice. And also, the programmes were thought to be a bit trashy. I was not totally banned from watching ITV as a child, but very, very strongly discouraged, to the point that I just didn't.

ginyogarepeat · 22/12/2019 22:09

Eastenders!

Scarscar · 22/12/2019 22:14

Tiswas. Although sometimes I managed to watch it at my nans.

Longdistance · 22/12/2019 22:14

We watched everything Blush my dp’s aren’t British so anything went. We used to watch Kenny Everett (only recently found out dh was banned from watching it), the Young Ones, absolute classic. Benny Hill (so un PC). I used to listen a and watch anything. Didn’t do me or my dB any harm!

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 22/12/2019 22:16

I don't know why ITV was supposed to be common, but it definitely was... every Christmas, there would be a bumper issue of both the Radio Times (BBC) and the TV Times (ITV) and certain people would look down on anyone who bought the latter.

I wonder now if it was because ITV had lots of toy adverts during kids' TV and the parents who banned commercial channels for being "common" were really just trying to avoid pester power.

RuggyPeg · 22/12/2019 22:18

Tiswas for me too, plus The Young Ones, although I did manage to sneak the odd peak at that when my M&D were distracted!!

Charlottejbt · 22/12/2019 22:18

The Goodies
Benny Hill
Coronation Street
That's Life also (was it the penis-shaped veg?!)
the one with Alf Garnett
Blake's Seven. I was allowed the opening credits, then it was bedtime.

ITV was frowned on but not outright banned, as was anything involving "common" accents. The blonde cockney woman on Record Breakers (I think it was) seemed really subversive!

I loved Dallas and Dynasty but was hardly ever allowed to stay up and watch them. Once or twice I did, but Dad would turn the sound down to near-inaudible about how it was stupid and he could write better and anyone who watched it was an idiot etc etc.

ChanandelerBong · 22/12/2019 22:19

Birds of a feather!

Mumdiva99 · 22/12/2019 22:21

@Beamur also The Young Ones. It was on after the watershed which was my bedtime age 11.

Although Rowan Atkinson was fair game.
I do remember watching Ben Elton with my dad and mum being very shocked. Did he do a scratch about putting in a cap?

funkylittleboatrace · 22/12/2019 22:21

Cybill and Blossom also Moesh.

sammi0805 · 22/12/2019 22:23

Anything on Cartoon Network except Flinstones.

aggitatedstate · 22/12/2019 22:24

Grange Hill. I went to a private school, DM thought I would end up tainted

doodlejump1980 · 22/12/2019 22:25

All soaps and anything in ITV.

Beamur · 22/12/2019 22:30

I loved the Goodies, loved Kenny Everett and happily watched Benny Hill.
It was pretty much only the Young ones my Mum drew a line at!

Jocasta2018 · 22/12/2019 22:35

Well.... from a very early age - Dr Who as it scared the living shit out of me. Those Daleks were horrific even if K9 was cute!

As a teenager I always needed tons of sleep so usually went to bed after the 9 o clock news so I missed the following
Blackadder
The Young Ones
Red Dwarf

It did mean I unfortunately couldn't chat to my mates about it the next day so I really missed out (the lady whose children are growing up without a TV take note!).
My parents said they were crap programmes so I wasn't missing anything. Unbeknownst to me, they watched them all avidly...

Whatsnewpussyhat · 22/12/2019 22:38

I was allowed to watch loads I probably should have but my dad wouldn't let me watch Brookside. Luckily my brothers had a tiny portable telly on their room so I watched it there. He would genuinely switch off the tv if he caught me watching it though. Weird. Said it was shite. Everyone in school watched it as it was local.

isabellerossignol · 22/12/2019 22:39

I've got the theme tune to That's Life in my head now...

Ladyratterley · 22/12/2019 22:39

Byker Grove and Grange Hill. I think because they both had drugs related storylines at some point.

DustyMaiden · 22/12/2019 22:42

I wasn’t forbidden to watch anything. Only one tv in the house though so DM was always watching soaps and game shows.
