How can you live on coronation street? I thought it was a set!

We weren't allowed to watch any "American rubbish" or science fiction (far fetched rubbish) or any films - not sure what the old bag's aversion to those was.

As a result I have never seen any of the film that people assume everybody has seen. I can only watch films at the cinema as I have a very short attention span and if I try to watch them at home, I get up and do other things in the middle Sad

Nothing was banned as my parents weren’t controlling arses. Banning ITV is snobbish as fuck. I’d have been ashamed of my parents

CointreauVersial · 28/12/2019 17:41

Genzeee - "Controlling arses"?? Surely parents are supposed to, umm....control what their children do, to some extent? It's known as Parenting.

I'm guessing you didn't grow up in the 1960s, so are probably unaware that many people viewed ITV as a bit naff or low class back then. It just "wasn't the BBC". It's a very outdated view, 50 years on.

I grew up in Singapore so didn't gave TV till we came home in 1974. We were definitely only allowed to watch BBC. And then only some programmes. Mainly educational.

I do remember watching Blue Peter, Dr Who and the sunday tea time drama. Which was always one if the classic childrens books.

We never watched a soap opera. And I've still never watched one.

DS wasnt allowed to watch the A Team. I hated it. Although he used to watch it at his fathers parents.

Power Rangers was banned when we brought up eldest DGD. And I still ban anything like that in my house now.

3 year old DGD2 is not allowed to watch American toddler programmes. In fact I think she is only allowed cbeebies

Grange Hill

There was a show called Clarissa Explains It All, starring Melissa Joan Hart, on Nickelodeon. My dad absolutely hated it and found it annoying so it was always switched off.

I'm the early 2000's I wasn't allowed to watch Buffy or power rangers. I was however allowed to watch the X files and highlander from a much younger age Confused

BBC children's programmes were too worthy.
Anything comedy like Morecambe and Wise, although the Two Ronnies were allowed.
Sitcoms were mush for the brain.

I still can't watch M&W without finding it unfunny, but I do like some sitcoms.

I have family friends who never watch C4. Ever. Even if something they like the sound of is on, if it's on C4 they won't watch it.

I've just stumbled on this thread & I'm delighted other people were banned from watching That's Life! Dad loathed Esther Ranzen & now I'm just as bad with Amanda Holden!

The Simpsons, as many of the characters were physically abusive and my mom felt that it shouldn't be normalized. Fair enough really - I watched a few episodes as an adult and I don't like it anyway.

Horror films rated anything above PG-13. Again, fair enough, as I was prone to nightmares and had a vivid imagination. Love them now though.

Jim all fix it. - my mum and dad thought he was weird
